What Is GIS? A Guide to Geographic Information Systems
What is GIS? https://gisgeography.com/what-is-gis/
GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. It's a computer-based tool that examines spatial relationships, patterns, and trends in geography. Using a GIS allows you to store, analyze, and visualize data for geographic positions on Earth’s surface.
There are 4 main functions of a GIS:
1) First, a GIS has a data management component for storing geographic locations.
2) Secondly, a GIS visualizes geographic data typically using maps.
3) Thirdly, GIS software can analyze spatial relationships and patterns using geoprocessing.
4) And finally, a GIS can either create new data or edit existing data.

Watch this video to learn more about "What Is GIS" and how we use GIS to model the world around us.

The HORRIFIC Torture Of The Women Of The Battle Of Berlin
During the Second World War as the war turned against the German Army, the Soviet Red Army advanced throughout German lands with brutality and speed. The Red Army soldiers became known for being horrific with committing many war crimes, including many of these being directed towards women. As the Soviet Union had been invaded by Germany years before, the Germans had committed many war crimes and assaults too, and with this the Soviets believed in retribution. But during the Battle of Berlin, the final battle of the Second World War in Europe, the Red Army committed horrific war crimes.

Citizen, Soldier and Taxpayer, Too - The Big Picture
Again, former Army Secretary Frank Pace, Jr. is the guest of THE BIG PICTURE to introduce a program of interest to every taxpayer. It's the story of the war the Army fights all the time -- the war against waste. Our cameras go to Japan for Operation Rollup, showing how we supply our troops with rehabilitated (but efficient) equipment and thereby save the taxpayer millions of dollars. We see how our troops are encouraged to be 'cost conscious' about their tools of warfare. It takes dollars to build and maintain an effective fighting machine, but the Army is making a continual effort to keep that cost to a minimum. The soldier; who is a taxpayer too, knows the cost of our defense effort.

It's believed that 100,000 women were subject to horrific ordeals at the hands of Soviet soldiers and around 20,000 women it is believed died because of their treatment. The women of Berlin were incredibly fearful of the Soviets and what they would do. In the early evenings, the women of Berlin would hide wherever they could as them deemed these were the 'hunting hours,' where Red Army soldiers patrolled and looked for women. Some of the stories of the Red Army inside of the German capital were horrifically tragic and sad, but inside of Berlin the Soviets conducted scores of war crimes. Still today many old Berliners can recall the horror of the Battle of Berlin.

Australia is preparing for war in order to avoid it. Their historic new increase in defense spending and China’s dependence on them for iron ore make them an important ally. located in the Indo-Pacific region they have become more strategically important in light of the US China security competition. Both great powers require resources from Australia. This means the democratic nation of Australia will play a crucial role if we’re headed into some kind of second cold war here.
The Australian defense forces down under will grow by 30 percent once the new plan is implemented, the country’s permanent military ranks will increase from 59,000 to nearly 80,000. But will it be too little too late? Let's look at the revolutionary new weapon systems that Australia is choosing to invest in, why the nation is so geopolitical important and whether or not China’s attempts to coerce Australia have been successful.
Australia, a nation of relatively small population of 25 million people while being the world's 6th largest country by size. Australia has an abundance of natural resources most important of which is their crude iron ore mines. One of the reasons for their geopolitical importance is they have the world's largest iron ore reserves estimated to be 51 billion metric tons or 30 percent of the world's entire supply.
This should give us a hint as to why China needed Australia so badly for the past two decades. Iron ore is essential to make steel which is necessary to build a strong industrial base. China needed this iron ore to build infrastructure projects, roads, highways, defense products and their entire belt and road project. Beijing imports 60% of their iron ore from Australia, and is heavily dependent on the commodity. Why can’t China mine their own iron ore supply domestically? China would need to develop hundreds of new mines, which would require an enormous amount of water and energy and expertise that their mining industry just doesn't have right now.

Don't Be a Sucker! is a short educational film produced by the U.S. War Department in 1943 and re-released in 1947. The film depicts the rise of Nazism in Germany and warns Americans against repeating the mistakes of intolerance made in Nazi Germany. It emphasizes that Americans will lose their country if they let themselves be turned into "suckers" by the forces of fanaticism and hatred. The film was made to make the case for the desegregation of the United States armed forces by simply revealing the connection between prejudice and fascism.
This film is not propaganda. To the contrary, it teaches how to recognize and reject propaganda, as was used by the Nazis to promote to bigotry and intimidation. It shows how prejudice can be used to divide the population to gain power. Far more significantly, it then shows how such tactics can be defanged by friendly persuasion; that protection of liberty is a unifying and practical way to live peacefully.
Plot:
A young American Free Mason is taken in by the message of a soap-box orator who asserts that all good jobs in the United States are being taken by the so-called minorities, domestic and foreign. He falls into a conversation with Hungarian professor who witnessed the rise of Nazism in Berlin and who tells him of the pattern of events that brought Hitler to power in Germany and how Germany's anti-democratic groups split the country into helpless minorities, each hating the other. The professor concludes by pointing out that America is composed of many minorities, but all are united as Americans.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Nazi Germany is the common English name for the period in German history from 1933 to 1945, when Germany was governed by a dictatorship under the control of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party (NSDAP). Under Hitler's rule, Germany was transformed into a fascist state in which the Nazi Party took totalitarian control over nearly all aspects of life. The official name of the state was Deutsches Reich from 1933 to 1943 and Großdeutsches Reich ("Greater German Reich") from 1943 to 1945. The period is also known under the names the Third Reich (German: Drittes Reich) and the National Socialist Period (German: Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, abbreviated as NS-Zeit). The Nazi regime came to an end after the Allied Powers defeated Germany in May 1945, ending World War 2 in Europe.
Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by the President of the Weimar Republic Paul von Hindenburg on 30 January 1933. The Nazi Party then began to eliminate all political opposition and consolidate its power. Hindenburg died on 2 August 1934, and Hitler became dictator of Germany by merging the powers and offices of the Chancellery and Presidency. A national referendum held 19 August 1934 confirmed Hitler as sole Führer (leader) of Germany. All power was centralized in Hitler's person, and his word became above all laws.
Racism, especially antisemitism, was a central feature of the regime. The Germanic peoples (the Nordic race) were considered by the Nazis to be the purest branch of the Aryan race, and were therefore viewed as the master race. Millions of Jews and other peoples deemed undesirable by the state were murdered in the Holocaust. Opposition to Hitler's rule was ruthlessly suppressed. Members of the liberal, socialist, and communist opposition were killed, imprisoned, or exiled. The Christian churches were also oppressed, with many leaders imprisoned. Education focused on racial biology, population policy, and fitness for military service. Career and educational opportunities for women were curtailed. Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels made effective use of film, mass rallies, and Hitler's hypnotizing oratory to control public opinion. The government controlled artistic expression, promoting specific art forms and banning or discouraging others.
Following the Allied invasion of Normandy (6 June, 1944), Germany was conquered by the Soviet Union from the east and the other Allied powers from the west and capitulated within a year. The victorious Allies initiated a policy of denazification and put many of the surviving Nazi leadership on trial for war crimes at the Nuremberg trials.

SUMMARY
=======
Australia entered World War II on 3 September 1939, following the government's acceptance of the United Kingdom's declaration of war on Nazi Germany. Following attacks on Allied countries, the Australian government later declared war on other members of the Axis powers, including the Kingdom of Italy (11 June 1940) and the Empire of Japan (8 December 1941). By the end of the war, almost a million Australians had served in the armed forces, whose military units fought primarily in the European theatre, North African campaign, and the South West Pacific theatre. In addition, Australia came under direct attack for the first time in its post-colonial history. Its casualties from enemy action during the war were 27,073 killed and 23,477 wounded.Australian Army units were gradually withdrawn from the Mediterranean and Europe following the outbreak of war with Japan. However, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Australian Navy units and personnel continued to take part in the war against Germany and Italy. From 1942 until early 1944, Australian forces played a key role in the Pacific War, making up the majority of Allied strength throughout much of the fighting in the South West Pacific theatre. While the military was largely relegated to subsidiary fronts from mid-1944, it continued offensive operations against the Japanese until the war ended.
World War II contributed to major changes in the nation's economy, military and foreign policy. The war accelerated the process of industrialisation, led to the development of a larger peacetime military and began the process with which Australia shifted the focus of its foreign policy from Britain to the United States. The final effects of the war also contributed to the development of a more diverse and cosmopolitan Australian society.

More from our archives: http://film.britishcouncil.org/british-council-film-collection
The British Council Film Collection is an archive of more than 120 short documentary films made by the British Council during the 1940s designed to show the world how Britain lived, worked and played. Preserved by the BFI National Film Archive and digitised by means of a generous donation by Google, the films are now yours to view, to download and to play with for the first time.Chronicling London during the midst of World War II, the film illustrates an essential re-structuring of British society in response to the pressures inflicted upon it.
As much loved landmarks were destroyed and uncertainty engulfed the capital, rather than losing spirit Britain pulled tighter together, turning urban basements into inner-city pig farms to ease the problems of food shortage, and transforming disused roof-top spaces into allotments for growing vegetables and flowers.
All notions of class-related entertainment and social etiquettes were usurped, instead favouring a communal lifting of mood achieved through innovative community schemes including bringing theatre shows into factory canteens and standardizing food prices in the eateries around the city.
As the film claims, even the ordinary citizen was willing to do their bit in order to secure a world 'free from want and fear'.
