📜 History of D-Day, The Great Crusade, Part 1
D-Day: June 6, 1944, the day when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to retake France from the Germans. D-Day: Archive video of the Normandy landings
D-Day and the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 remains arguably the most pivotal point of The Second World War.
It remains the largest ever seaborne invasion, with 5,000 ships, 11,000 aircraft, 50,000 vehicles and 150,000 troops carrying out the daring mission.
Without the bravery of so many young men storming the France's shores in Normandy - Juno Beach, Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Sword Beach and Gold Beach - many military historians fear the Allies may have lost the war or even been forced into extreme circumstances, including the use of nuclear bombs.
More than 10,000 Allied troops died during "Operation Overlord," but their efforts helped peace and freedom prevail over Adolf Hitler's Nazi forces.

Omaha Beach, D-Day (June 6, 1944)
On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the biggest amphibious landing operation the world has ever seen - Operation Neptune.
In all five sectors allied troops, despite the element of surprise, sustained great casualties. However, one of them was more devastating than others.
At Omaha beach, US soldiers had the greatest difficulties in achieving their objective.
The price they paid on this beach, rightfully earned it the nickname …. ‘Bloody Omaha’.

D-Day (1944)
By June 6th 1944, the Allies had landed 150,000 men in Normandy. The five beaches were secure and the troops were pushing inland.
The Allies had gained air and sea superiority, however the landing forces were not as strong as they could have been due to limited landing craft and paratroop aircraft.

D-DAY: June 6, 1944: ACTION at the Normandy Beaches
This covers the landings on June 6, 1944. More than 160,000 troops landed along a 50 mile stretch of heavily fortified structures of French settlements along the coastline, to fight on the beaches in France where Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, "we will accept nothing less than full victory.’ More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported this effort, and by day's end, the Allies gained a foothold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives was high. More than 9,000 were lost, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Germany.

Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 https://bbc.in/iPlayer-Home 75 years ago the Allied Forces were making their final preparations for the invasion of Normandy. Known as D-Day, the mission would prove a decisive turning point in the Second World War. Live from Southsea Common in Portsmouth, Huw Edwards introduces full uninterrupted coverage of the National Commemorative Event taking place to mark the 75th anniversary.
Over 300 of the last surviving D-Day veterans will join the Queen and the President of the United States, together with other world leaders from the Allied Nations in Portsmouth. The commemorations will tell the remarkable story of the build up to the D-Day Landings through veteran testimony, theatrical performances and musical numbers, culminating with a spectacular flypast featuring aircraft old and new, including the Red Arrows.
Huw Edwards are joined by special guests in the studio whilst reporters Michelle Ackerley and JJ Chalmers are on the ground meeting veterans and finding out why it's still so important to mark this anniversary.
