The Bain family murders refers to the deaths of Robin and Margaret Bain, along with three of their children - Arawa, Laniet and Stephen - in Dunedin, New Zealand on 20 June 1994. Their eldest son, David Cullen Bain was wrongfully convicted in May 1995 on five counts of murder. He spent almost 13 years of a life sentence in prison before the Privy Council declared there had been a 'substantial miscarriage of justice'. He was released on bail in May 2007, pending retrial.
Soon after Bain was convicted in 1995, his case was taken up by businessman and former All Black footballer Joe Karam, who had been convinced that Bain was innocent. Karam helped Bain navigate a long appeal process through the New Zealand court system, and has written four books about the case. In May 2007, Bain's legal team, guided by Karam, successfully appealed to the Privy Council in Britain. Finding there had been a substantial miscarriage of justice, the Privy Council quashed Bain's convictions and ordered a retrial. The retrial ended with Bain's acquittal on all charges in June 2009. The Privy Council finding of miscarriage of justice and the outcome of the retrial raised the possibility that David's father, Robin Bain, was not murdered, but committed suicide after killing the other family members.
In 1927 he married a Welsh girl, in 1927, in Bootle and two sons were born of their marriage. From 1948 to 1966 they lived in Mather Avenune, Allerton a suburb of Liverpool. His older brother Jimmy also played for Manchester United.
Thomas Robert Anderson (born 2 September 1993) is a footballer who currently plays for Burnley as a defender.
Career
Anderson started his career in the Centre of Excellence at Burnley, joining the club as a seven-year-old. He progressed through the Centre of Excellence and went on to join the under-18 side, signing a two-year scholarship in the summer of 2010. He was captain of the Burnley side that reached the semi-finals of the 2011–12 FA Youth Cup, however he missed the tail end of the season due to a bout of Infectious mononucleosis. In May 2012, on completion of his scholarship he signed his first professional contract on a one-year deal.
In August 2012, he signed for Conference Premier side Barrow on loan until January 2013, along with fellow Burnley player Joe Jackson. His debut came in the same month in a 0–0 draw at home to AFC Telford United. He established himself as a first team regular as the Bluebirds struggled towards the bottom end of the table. Barrow looked into extending his loan deal but Anderson returned to Burnley in January, having made twenty-one appearances for the club. In January 2013 upon his return to Burnley, he made first team bench for the 2–0 away win at Millwall, remaining an unused substitute. A month later he joined Conference Premier side Hyde on a one-month loan deal. His debut came against Kidderminster Harriers in a 4–0 away defeat, replacing Josh Brizell as a second-half substitute. His first start for the club came in the 1–0 home defeat to Mansfield Town. He returned to Burnley late in February having only made four appearances, after his loan was cut short due to suffering a knee ligament injury in the 5–1 defeat to Alfreton Town.
Neo (born as Thomas A. Anderson, also known as The One) is a fictional character in The Matrix franchise. He was portrayed by Keanu Reeves in The Matrix Trilogy, as well as having a cameo in The Animatrix short film 'Kid's Story'. Andrew Bowen provided Neo's voice in The Matrix: Path of Neo. In 2008, Neo was selected by Empire as the 16th Greatest Movie Character of All Time. Neo is also an anagram of "o n e", a reference to his destiny of being The One who would bring peace. There are claims that a nightclub in Chicago inspired the name of the character in the Matrix.
Character background
Thomas A. Anderson was born in Lower Downtown, Capital City, USA on March 11, 1962 (so, in the real world near 2162) according to his criminal record, or September 13, 1971 according to his passport (both seen in the film). His mother was Michelle McGahey (the name of the first film's art director) and his father was John Anderson. He attended Central West Junior High and Owen Patterson High (named after the film's production designer). In high school, he excelled at science, math and computer courses, and displayed an aptitude for literature and history. Although he had disciplinary troubles when he was thirteen to fourteen years old, Anderson went on to become a respected member of the school community through his involvement in football and hockey.
In 1989 he left Western Australia and joined the Brisbane Bears. Bain was the joint winner of Brisbane's best and fairest in 1990 with Martin Leslie. He also finished equal fourth in the Brownlow Medal count. In 1994 he crossed to Fitzroy and spent a season with the club.
The third part of his career was spent in the QAFL where he had a successful stint as captain of the Southport Sharks, leading them to four premierships and winning two Grogan Medals.

Further evidence at Bain trial of alleged incest between Laniet and father
David Bain's defence team has called more evidence to support their theory that Bain's father and sister were involved in an incestuous relationship.
Bain is being retried at the High Court in Christchurch for the killings of his family at their Dunedin home in 1994.
Witness Sean Clarke knew Bain and his sister Laniet.
He remembered Laniet approaching him at the University distressed and upset a month before the murders, looking for her brother.
Mr Clarke says Laniet spoke of her father Robin, and then said she couldn't stand what he was doing to her anymore - and wanted to move back home, away from the camper van she was staying in with her father.
Another witness, Daryl Young says he went to visit Robin Bain at that camper van 18 months before the murders, and says he ...

Explanation for the 16 years thing (SPOILERS):
There isn’t much of one really. New Zealand’s justice system has less of an emphasis on punishment than other countries, and we don’t do consecutive sentences - so you don’t see those Holtzclaw-esque centuries long prison terms. Bain was relatively young, had no prior history and 16 years is actually getting up there in terms of what you see handed down for serious crimes - this was especially so at the time.
[MORE SPOILERS, don't keep going if you haven't finished the video]
One thing to bear in mind before getting TOO outraged at how lax we are: A minimum non-parole period is just that, a minimum. So once his 16 years were up, if he was still deemed a danger he could be kept inside, and there is no maximum as to how long they could extend his prison stay. Though in Bain’s case he likely would have gotten out around the time his term was up due to how controversial the case was. Lifers who get parole are also on probation til the day they die...Cold comfort for anyone who might be victimized by them if they re-offend, of course.
Life without parole is not something that is categorically off the table in any circumstance. We have handed that down ONCE and it was very recently. The Christchurch Mosque Shooter will never see the light of day again. Harshest sentence ever before that was 30 years. If you’re of the opinion cold blooded murderers should be given life without parole basically by default, there are plenty of Kiwis who agree with you.
