The Hedonistic Imperative - David Pearce
Filmed at the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne Australia
http://hedweb.com - The Hedonistic Imperative outlines how genetic engineering and nanotechnology will abolish suffering in all sentient life.
The abolitionist project is hugely ambitious but technically feasible. It is also instrumentally rational and morally urgent. The metabolic pathways of pain and malaise evolved because they served the fitness of our genes in the ancestral environment. They will be replaced by a different sort of neural architecture - a motivational system based on heritable gradients of bliss. States of sublime well-being are destined to become the genetically pre-programmed norm of mental health. It is predicted that the world's last unpleasant experience will be a precisely dateable event.

Israeli forces have carried out a dramatic raid in Gaza to free some of the hostages captured by Hamas on October the 7th. The news that four hostages were freed, including Noa Argamani, has brought relief and celebration to Israelis, but it has also been reported that 100 Palestinians were killed by the IDF during the course of the operation.
Palestinian-American commentator Omar Baddar, host of the Part of the Problem podcast Dave Smith and journalist Emily Austin join Piers Morgan to discuss whether Israel has any limits, or if any international power could stem the violence it commits to achieve its goals.

On the Origin of Suffering [Full] - David Pearce
Does pain=suffering? Did suffering exist before complex muti-cellular life? Suffering on earth probably did not exist before the Cambrian Explosion or whenever we date the origin of multi-cellular life..
Single celled organisms may have felt pain as rudimentary experience, though this is distinct from unitary subjective experience of suffering.

Pearce maintains a series of websites devoted to transhumanist topics and what he calls the "hedonistic imperative", a moral obligation to work towards the abolition of suffering in all sentient life. His self-published internet manifesto, The Hedonistic Imperative (1995), outlines how pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and neurosurgery could converge to eliminate all forms of unpleasant experience from human and non-human life, replacing suffering with "gradients of bliss". Pearce calls this the "abolitionist project".

Christy Giles & Hilda Cabrales: Did a Night Out in Hollywood Lead to Murder?
Welcome to another special episode of #CourtroomConfidential: Case Notes! This week, host Joshua Ritter dives into the mysterious and tragic deaths of two Los Angeles women.
In November 2021, 24-year-old Christy Giles and 26-year-old Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola went out together for a girls' night. The next day, a group of masked men in a plateless vehicle dumped the women at two separate hospitals.
Christy passed away soon after, and Hilda was taken off life support nearly two weeks later – a day before her 27th birthday.
Three men were eventually arrested: David Pearce was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, while Brandt Osborn and Michael Ansbach were arrested on suspicion of accessory to manslaughter.
Watch as Joshua breaks down the timeline of Christy and Hilda’s night out,...

Was Friedrich Nietzsche a Transhumanist? A critique of Nietzsche by David Pearce
Bioconservatives often quote a line from Nietzsche: "That which does not crush me makes me stronger." But alas pain often does crush people: physically, emotionally, morally. Chronic, uncontrolled pain tends to make the victim tired, depressed and weaker. True, some people are relatively resistant to physical distress. For example, high testosterone function may make someone "tougher", more "manly", more resilient, and more able to deal with physically painful stimuli. But such strength doesn't necessarily make the subject more empathetic or a better person. Indeed, if I may quote W. Somerset Maugham, "It is not true that suffering ennobles the character; happiness does that sometimes, but suffering, for the most part, makes men petty and vindictive."

Two hundred years ago, powerful synthetic pain-killers and surgical anesthetics were unknown. The notion that physical pain could be banished from most people's lives would have seemed absurd. Today most of us in the technically advanced nations take its routine absence for granted. The prospect that what we describe as psychological pain, too, could ever be banished is equally counter-intuitive. The feasibility of its abolition turns its deliberate retention into an issue of social policy and ethical choice.

If one finds oneself viscerally hostile to the idea of universal happiness, and if by contemporary standards one falls within the statistically normal range in one's emotional repertoire, then just how seriously should one contemplate the following possibility? Today we are the victims of what our successors will reckon an atavistic mood disorder. This disorder infects all our thoughts as well as all our feelings and volitions. It is a historical condition no less epistemically defective than are dream-psychoses from the perspective of the waking state.
Is the worry one might be locked in such an affective psychosis just the product of idle scepticism? Given the cognitive inaccessibility of most of the generically ecstatic states alluded to here, perhaps one wouldn't know if one were so afflicted. After all, damaged and disfigured minds may have limited self-insight. Nor would one necessarily have the conceptual resources even to grasp what was at stake if one suffered from such a neural deficit. Pure, "unearned", genetically-driven bliss of even the mildest flavour detracted from the inclusive fitness of one's genes in the ancestral environment. Constitutionally happy freaks-of-nature got eaten or outbred. Hence unipolar euphoric mania today is vanishingly rare; unipolar melancholic depression and chronic dysthymia are all too common. Is one's potential unease, if not revulsion, at the prospect of paradise-on-earth an incidental cultural by-product of natural selection? Or has selection pressure ensured that one is genetically predisposed to be biased against the idea of enduring bliss in the first instance?

David Pearce is a prominent figure within the transhumanism movement and one of the co-founders of the World Transhumanist Association, currently rebranded and incorporated as Humanity+.

Watch as Joshua breaks down the timeline of Christy and Hilda’s night out, and the latest information in the case.

Watch as Joshua breaks down the timeline of Christy and Hilda’s night out, and the latest information in the case.

"To those human beings who are of any concern to me I wish suffering, desolation, sickness, ill-treatment, indignities - I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, the wretchedness of the vanquished: I have no pity for them, because I wish them the only thing that can prove today whether one is worth anything or not - that one endures."
(The Will to Power, p 481)
"You want, if possible - and there is no more insane "if possible" - to abolish suffering. And we? It really seems that we would rather have it higher and worse than ever. Well-being as you understand it - that is no goal, that seems to us an end, a state that soon makes man ridiculous and contemptible - that makes his destruction desirable. The discipline of suffering, of great suffering - do you not know that only this discipline has created all enhancements of man so far?"
(Beyond Good and Evil, p 225 )
"I do not point to the evil and pain of existence with the finger of reproach, but rather entertain the hope that life may one day become more evil and more full of suffering than it has ever been."
Friedrich Nietzsche
(1844-1900)
Of course, suffering doesn't always enfeeble and embitter. By analogy, someone who is emotionally depressed may feel that despair is the only appropriate response to the horrors of the world. But the solution to the horrors of the world is not for us all to become depressed. Rather it's to tackle the biology of depression. Likewise, the solution to the horrors of physical pain is not to flagellate ourselves in sympathy with the afflicted. Instead it's to tackle the biological roots of suffering.
