How to use the Viking Dane Axe: A methodology for research

How do we try to reconstruct historically-informed martial arts systems from the past, where we don't have a manual, treatise or living lineage? What I'm looking at here is not specifically how I think they should be used, but rather how you or anyone else could use history and other methods, to arrive at a plausible theory.

Dane Axe VS. Longsword... Think You're Safe? Hah!
You don't see sparring with a two-handed axe very often, especially against a sword (or two... yes, there's dual wielding too). So that's what we tried, and it was quite a fun practice session!
It's a match of reach & power against versatility, basically. Which weapon would you place your bet on?
Also let me know what you think about the first-person POV. It was tricky to safely mount the Gopro on the fencing mask but worked out pretty well, I'd say.

Testing a thin shield against a Dane axe
Testing a hypothetical all-organic-materials Finnish shield inspired by the Tira bog shield in Latvia, dated to middle Viking Age 875 CE, against a two handed Petersen type M axe (the so called Dane axe), dated to late Viking Age, ca. 950 onwards. This shield and axe are really not from the same time, but similar shields might have been used until the period when Dane axes were used. And in any case this test was made for testing the durability of a thin shield.

Cold Steel - Viking Axe

Cold Steel has been a long time believer in the ferocious cutting power of a well-designed Viking Axe. Until recently, we lacked the technical ability to make one to our satisfaction. However, with our new state-of-the-art forging facility, we can offer our customers something truly exceptional.
Our Viking Axe's formidably long, thin blade is fully polished and hand sharpened to a bone-splitting, shield shattering edge. It comes with a robust 10" cutting surface that terminates in two sharp horns or points. Traditionally, the longer top point was used for stabbing, gouging, or parrying, while the slightly shorter bottom point was used to capture an opponent's shield or to hook and immobilize his neck, arms, or legs.

Blacksmithing - Forging a Viking Dane Axe
In this video i try to forge a viking style battle axe, also refered to as a "dane axe". In my opinion its one of the hardest axes i have ever made. Its increddibly thin andalso has a reenforced edge, so quite tricky in my honest opinion. Now there are a frew things i would have done differently, but all in all, im pretty happy with it.
Hope you enjoy the video!

It's a match of reach & power against versatility, basically. Which weapon would you place your bet on?
Also let me know what you think about the first-person POV. It was tricky to safely mount the Gopro on the fencing mask but worked out pretty well, I'd say.

To maximize leverage, strength, and dexterity of movement, the Viking Axe is equipped with a very strong, resilient haft. Made in the state of Maine from the best hickory available, it enhances and amplifies our Viking Axe's lethal potential as a cutting, chopping and stabbing weapon.
SPECS:
Overall Length: 52"
Hawk Length: 9 5/8"
Primary Edge: 10 1/3"
Steel: 1055 Carbon
Weight: 4 Lbs. 10 oz
