A NEW APPROACH TO ENERGY - Dan Jørgensen, Denmark’s Minister for Climate, Energy & Public Utilities
WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
Many new initiatives were launched at COP 26 in Glasgow.
One was the Beyond Oil & Gas Alliance – an idea thought up by Costa Rica and Denmark to bring together countries from around the world to prepare for a world without fossil fuels.
Dan Jørgensen, Denmark’s Minister for Climate, Energy & Public Utilities joined Stephen to explain the thinking behind the alliance, how it was received at the meeting in Glasgow, and why Denmark is looking to lead the world into a greener future.
He also explains the concept of Denmark’s new energy islands – and how the wind power they generate could help supply a huge swathe of northern Europe.

Dan Jørgensen is Denmark’s Minister for Climate, Energy and Public Utilities, a role he has held since June 2019.

Denmark's $34 Billion Green Energy Island
If 34 billion dollars in capital investment would provide for the energy needs of 6 million people almost pollutant free, would you do it? That’s the question Denmark - population a touch under that 6 million - is currently answering with a resounding yes.
Green energy, as we all know, is looking likely to be one of the keys to humanity’s future. If it’s successful, it will represent a societal change with implications for the whole planet. While recycling your bottles and not leaving your TV on standby still has its place, it’s becoming increasingly clear that bigger sweeping changes are needed to redress the climate crisis.

From black to green: The story of Denmark's green transition
Like many countries, Denmark was once entirely dependent on imported fossil fuels. Today, many consider Denmark a global green frontrunner.
Denmark’s transition is a story of moving from black to green by means of public-private partnerships, broad political agreements, strong research and development and a private sector bold enough to supercharge action at an early stage. Standing on the shoulders of fifty years of dedicated efforts, we have come far. We have made decisive changes to how sustainability is integrated in industries as well as local economies, but we ought to get even further.

The Rise of CCS in Denmark
With ambitious climate targets combined and significant CO2 storage potential, Denmark is steadily pursuing CCS as part of its climate change mitigation plans. In December 2021, the Danish government and several political parties reached an agreement to provide EUR 2.2bn (DKK 16bn) for the development of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects, following an earlier government announcement to fund two CO2 storage initiatives to the tune of $41 million. As supportive policy development gets matched with funding, industry players in the country are beginning to approach CCS as both a business strategy and an emissions mitigation effort.
In fact, there have already been some mammoth projects in this area. China’s Tengger Desert solar park covers 16 square miles. South Korea uses an area of a similar size to produce energy from waves, having built an artificial wall to create tidal-power generating Sihwa Lake. The UK powers around 600,000 homes with a single large wind farm off its west coast, and Canada is set to open the world’s biggest green hydrogen plant.
Denmark, though, will be taking things one step further, producing an entire offshore island with the sole aim of making a ginormous step in the country’s drive towards green energy.
