Documentary about the Danish Waffen-SS volunteers who served on the Eastern Front during the Second World War.
The main focus of the documentary is the battles of Free Corps Denmark (Frikorps Danmark) in the Demyansk Pocket in spring 1942. The actions of Regiment 24 "Danmark" during the Battle of Berlin in spring 1945 are also mentioned towards the end.
* Note that not all footage is of the units being mentioned at the time *
Approximately 6.000 Danish citizens served in Waffen-SS, of which 1.500 were part of the German minority in Northern Schleswig. Around a further 700 served in the Wehrmacht, of which most were from the German minority. Besides these Danish citizens, note the many German citizens of Danish ancestry from Schleswig-Holstein, such as those with -sen surnames like "Hansen".
Danes primarily served in the following three units:
23 April 1940, SS Regiment "Nordland" was established as part of 5th SS Division "Wiking",
where both Danes, Norwegians and Swedes served. Here some Danes took part in actual lightning war on the Southern Russian front.
29 June 1941, Free Corps Denmark was established as an all Danish motorised battalion, consisting of 5 companies, with a few German officers, and the Danes from SS Regiment "Nordland" were transfered. Due to issues with the German supply, a large part of the vehicles were sourced from the stock of the Danish Army. Initially, Free Corps Denmark was supposed to use Danish uniforms, but this was later declined due their resemblance of Russian uniforms. The command language was also Danish. Free Corps Denmark was deployed twice on the Northern Russian Front, first in the swamps of Demyansk in spring of 1942, under command of 3rd SS Division "Totenkopf" and later in winter warfare at Velikiye Luki in autumn of 1942, under command of 1st SS Brigade.
20 May 1943 Free Corps Denmark was disbanded, and most were transfered to the new
SS Panzergrenadier Regiment 24 "Danmark" as part of the 11th SS Volunteer Division "Nordland", that was formed around the old SS Regiment "Nordland". Only around 1/3 of this unit were Danes, due to high losses and low recruiting rates, with primarily Germans and Volksdeutsche from Romania making up the rest. The Danes had a general distrust in the Romanians, both due to racial and religious differences - the Danes being Protestants and the Romanians Catholics. The change from the ethnic Free Corps to a mixed Regiment was largely unpopular, and many tried to terminate their contracts. I and II Battalion each consisted of 3 infantry and 1 heavy company. III Battalion consisted of 8 companies. The I Battalion was made up of the former Free Corps Denmark, and likewise its commander was the former chief of Free Corps Denmark, K.B. Martinsen. This also angered some Danes, who had expected to see K.B. Martinsen becoming regimental commander. In summer and fall of 1943, they participated in anti-partisan operations in the Balkans. In December 1943, they arrived at the Oranienbaum Pocket and in late January 1944 they had to retreat to Narva. This was exploited in propaganda, due to the proximity to the historical battlefields of the Danish Baltic Crusades in the 12th-13th centuries. During spring 1944, I Battalion of Regiment "Danmark" was sent to Germany to rebuild, and was put under command of Division "Wiking" in November 1944 with which ended the war in Hungary in May 1945. In the end of July 1944 Division "Nordland" retreated from Narva to the Tannenberg Line, where Regiment "Danmark" saw very heavy combat in the period 26th July to 5th August. III Battalion was almost destroyed and II Battalion had heavy losses, which were replaced by soldiers from penal units and Estonian volunteers. In late September 1944, they retreated to Riga and were later encircled in the Courland Pocket. In late January 1945, they were shipped from Courland to Pomerania where they fought until March 1945. From March to May 1945, Regiment "Danmark" took part in the Battle of Berlin.
Since I do not speak Russian, I had to rely on the Danish subtitles when Russian is spoken. From experience, the provided subtitles are usually very lacking, so I can't guarantee the accuracy of the subtitles during the Russian sequences.
