Bauhaus design is everywhere, but its roots are political
How does a revolutionary idea turn into a worldwide commercial success?
The answer is in the story of the Bauhaus. It’s the hundredth anniversary of the Bauhaus design school and it still has more to teach us. The Bauhaus is most often remembered for its namesake “style,” but the school’s most lasting impact is its philosophy: that design should serve people.

Quartz News travels to Germany and New England to explore the famous design school’s legacy.

How has the Bauhaus school of architecture and design, Germany’s best-known art school, shaped the world we live in today?
bauhausWORLD - The Effect (2/3): https://youtu.be/LW1415Ddf8c
bauhausWORLD - The Utopia (3/3): https://youtu.be/2uVWAS6Q6AY
The three-part documentary bauhausWORLD marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Germany’s best-known art, architecture and design school, the Bauhaus. Exploring the legacy of this iconic German institution, our film crew traveled the world, meeting architects, artists, urban planners, doers and dreamers. Do the Bauhaus’s social ideals and design principles still shape how we live today?
New approaches to education and training, architecture, painting, dance and design were explored and developed at the Bauhaus. Its founder and director Walter Gropius attracted the leading creative figures of the era, including Hannes Meyer, Mies van der Rohe, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers, Josef Albers and Gunta Stölzl. Today, Bauhaus is considered the birthplace of Modernism and has become a byword for sleek, functional design.
Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus school moved to Dessau in 1925 and then to Berlin, where it was forced to shut in 1933 after Hitler seized power. Most of its artists, architects and visionaries emigrated, fanning out and spreading the Bauhaus doctrine around the world.
Filmmaker Lydia Ranke and her team traveled the world to make the three-part documentary bauhausWORLD. Alongside the Bauhaus sites of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, they visited cities such as Tokyo, Amman, Tel Aviv, New York, Chicago, Mexico City and Medellín, talking to experts from architects Norman Foster and Tatiana Bilbao to architecture critic Mark Wigley, furniture designer Yinka Ilori and fashion designer Kasia Kucharska.
"The Code" is the first part of bauhausWORLD. The search for the secret of Bauhaus’s enduring success leads all the way to Japan - a journey illustrating how the forced closure of the school that drove the movement into exile served to spread its philosophy around the world.

The Bauhaus still exerts influence on art, design and architecture around the globe. But is it to blame for the modern world’s obsession with design?
bauhausWORLD - The Code (1/3): https://youtu.be/rg3X1vZN5TA
bauhausWORLD - The Utopia (3/3): https://youtu.be/2uVWAS6Q6AY
Alongside the Bauhaus sites of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, they visited Tokyo, Amman, Tel Aviv, New York, Chicago, Medellín and Mexico City, talking to experts from Norman Foster and Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao to architecture critic Mark Wigley, furniture designer Yinka Ilori and fashion designer Kasia Kucharska.
Part 2 of bauhausWORLD, "The Effect", takes viewers on a journey from Dessau to New York, Älmhult in Sweden and Ulm in Germany to examine the influence that Bauhaus still exerts on art, design and architecture around the globe. Nowadays the name of Bauhaus has been transformed into a brand. Is it to blame for the modern world’s obsession with design?

Whose voices - whose labels - should a machine learning algorithm learn to emulate? For AI tasks ranging from online comment toxicity detection to poster design to medical treatment, different groups in society may have irreconcilable disagreements about what constitutes ground truth. Today's supervised machine learning pipeline typically resolves these disagreements implicitly by majority vote over annotators' opinions. This majoritarian procedure abstracts individual people out of the pipeline and collapses their labels into an aggregate pseudo-human, ignoring minority groups' labels. In this talk, I will present Jury Learning: an interactive AI architecture that enables developers to explicitly reason over whose voice a model ought to emulate through the metaphor of a jury. Through our exploratory interface, practitioners can declaratively define which people or groups, in what proportion, determine the classifier's prediction. To evaluate models under societal disagreement, I will also present The Disagreement Deconvolution: a metric transformation showing how, in abstracting away the individual people that models impact, current metrics dramatically overstate the performance of many user-facing tasks. These components become building blocks of a new pipeline for encoding our goals and values in human-AI systems, which strives to bridge principles of HCI with the realities of machine learning.
About the speaker:
Mitchell L. Gordon is a computer science PhD student at Stanford University in the Human-Computer Interaction group, advised by Michael Bernstein and James Landay. He designs interactive systems and evaluation approaches that bridge principles of human-computer interaction with the realities of machine learning. His work has won awards at top conferences in human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence, including a Best Paper award at CHI and an Oral at NeurIPS. He is supported by an Apple PhD Fellowship in AI/ML, and has interned at Apple, Google, and CMU HCII.

Our weekly SRI Seminar Series welcomes Michael Bernstein, an associate professor of computer science at Stanford University, where he is a member of the Human-Computer Interaction Group. Bernstein’s research on the design of social computing systems has won best paper awards at top conferences in human-computer interaction, and has been reported in venues such as The New York Times, New Scientist, Wired, and The Guardian.
In this talk, Bernstein will explore how AI systems respond to and mitigate forms of societal disagreement, demonstrating a “Jury Learning” AI architecture that is designed to resolve such forms disagreement, and organizational initiatives established to aid researchers in navigating these issues.
Talk title:
“Designing artificial intelligence to navigate societal disagreement”
Abstract:
Whose voices—whose labels—should artificial intelligence (AI) systems learn to emulate? For AI tasks ranging from online comment toxicity to misinformation detection to medical diagnosis, different groups in society may have irreconcilable disagreements about what constitutes ground truth. I will present empirical results demonstrating that current AI metrics overestimate performance in the face of this societal disagreement. In response, I will describe Jury Learning, an AI architecture that resolves these disagreements explicitly through the metaphor of a jury: defining which people or groups, in what proportion, determine the classifier's prediction. Because no technical architecture is singularly enough to solve these problems, I will also describe an organizational architecture, Ethics and Society Review (ESR), which we created at Stanford University to aid researchers in navigating these issues.
