What is rising damp? | How to spot rising damp in your home
Ever wondered what is rising damp or where does it come from? Rising Damp is the name given to the process of capillary action when it occurs in properties. This describes how pores in the brickwork and mortar soak up water from external ground moisture and allow it to travel up into the home and ultimately soaking internal walls.
Rising Damp has a few signature tell-tale signs that help you to identify it vs other forms of damp in the home. Typically walls affected by it will display a damp tide mark that can reach up to 1 metre in height. Another common sign of Rising Damp is the appearance of ground salts on the wall surface.

Stop Damp Coming Through Your Walls With Dampseal
Flaking and peeling paint on a wall is often caused by dampness. This moisture gets between the paint layer and the wall surface underneath, and is often a problem in areas with high moisture - such as a bathroom. Dampseal helps to create a watertight barrier that the paint bonds to. Watch Dave as explains the quick and easy steps to achieve this solution with Plascon Dampseal.

Dryrod Damp-Proofing Rods - The Ultimate Rising Damp Treatment
Dryrod Damp-Proofing Rods are patented fibre rods that carry a powerful water-repellent material. They are simply inserted into holes drilled at regular intervals along a mortar course. Once inserted, the rods diffuse their water-repellent material along the mortar course, curing to form an effective barrier to rising damp.
They have been scientifically proven to eliminate rising damp even in highly-saturated walls. This performance has also been internationally tested and approved.

Is This Condensation or Rising Damp?
📪 Ask Skill Builder: http://skill-builder.uk/send
Roger tries to figure out another damp issue, or does he?
Here's our message from Jordan:
We moved into this property about 5 weeks ago and have noticed that after the bad spell of rain, the wall has a big wet patch with mould appearing.
We had a survey done before we moved in (the dampness wasn’t present then), highlighting the damp but putting it down to condensation damp.
Since moving in, we have had 4 damp specialists around who have since quoted us for different bits of work but have all said it’s down to different things.
This is our first house, and we don’t know what to get carried out as some of the treatments were costly. Can you help identify what it actually is? Rising damp or condensation damp etc.

Why Is The Wall Damp & How Did He Fix It?
Special thanks go to Sam & Jen from SJ Ward Builders.
Wicking, also known as capillary action, occurs when moisture is drawn up a wall from the ground, typically due to a lack of or a faulty damp-proof course. It can cause severe structural damage and mould growth if left untreated.
Other underlying issues that may cause wicking include poor drainage or a high water table. It's essential to maintain proper drainage around the foundation, regularly check for cracks or defects in the walls and ensure that any renovations or additions to the building are made with proper damp-proofing measures in place.

THE RISING DAMP MYTH
Rising damp is a condition that affects the walls of buildings when water from the ground rises up through the bricks and mortar, mainly due to capillary action.
Despite its well-documented presence and the potential damage it can cause to properties, a contingent of sceptics believe that rising dampness is a myth concocted to sell unnecessary damp-proofing services.
However, a wealth of scientific evidence and studies support the existence of rising damp and highlight the importance of addressing it to preserve the integrity of buildings.
The rising damp concept is grounded in physics and material science principles. Capillary action, where liquid spontaneously rises in a narrow space such as a thin tube or in porous materials, is central to rising damp.
This action is due to the adhesive force between the water and the material being stronger than the cohesive forces within the water itself. The pores in bricks and mortar act like many tiny capillaries, allowing groundwater to rise up through the walls of a building.
This process is exacerbated in older buildings, which may lack a damp proof course (DPC) or have a DPC that has failed over time.
Scientific studies have been conducted to measure and observe the effects of rising damp within buildings. For instance, researchers have utilized salt analysis, moisture readings, and thermographic inspections to trace the path of moisture through building materials.
These studies have consistently demonstrated that water from the ground can ascend through masonry to a height that can cause visible damage and create a conducive environment for mould growth and wood rot.
Moreover, the presence of hygroscopic salts, which can absorb moisture from the air, further supports the existence of rising damp. These salts are often found in the masonry of buildings affected by rising dampness, having been deposited as the water evaporates.
The ability of these salts to attract and retain moisture adds to the dampness of the walls, even in the absence of direct contact with groundwater.
This phenomenon has been thoroughly documented in laboratory settings, where the hygroscopic behaviour of these salts in masonry materials has been closely studied.
Critics of rising dampness often point to inadequate ventilation, condensation, and penetrating dampness as the real culprits of building moisture.
While these factors can contribute to a building's overall dampness, they do not negate the existence of rising dampness. Instead, they highlight the complexity of damp issues in buildings and the need for comprehensive diagnostics to identify the correct cause.
Installing or repairing a damp-proof course is crucial to address rising dampness effectively. This barrier prevents groundwater from rising up through the walls.
Modern building regulations mandate the inclusion of a DPC in new constructions, a testament to the recognition of rising dampness as a genuine concern by industry professionals and regulatory bodies alike.
In conclusion, the scepticism surrounding rising mainly stems from a misunderstanding of its causes and the science behind it. The evidence for increasing damp is empirical and rooted in fundamental physical principles.
Addressing rising dampness is crucial not just for the structural integrity of buildings but also for the health and comfort of their occupants, making it a topic of both scientific and practical importance.
