Why Damascus Knives Are So Expensive | So Expensive | Insider Business
Quality Damascus knives can cost over $5,000. Their signature swirl pattern comes from layering two different alloys and folding them over each other, sometimes resulting in thousands of layers. This can take master smiths a month and that intense labor accounts for much of the final price.

What Is Damascus Steel? (And Everything You Need to Know about It)
What is Damascus steel?
Damascus steel is one solid piece of steel made from layering two different alloys — 1080 high-carbon steel and 15N20 carbon steel, for instance.
You can’t make Damascus steel by combining two pieces of the same alloy. That would be like stacking red Play-Doh on top of red Play-Doh — you just end up with red Play-Doh.

I started working with Damascus steel as a teenager, meaning I’ve been working with it for over 25 years to date. In fact, in 2000, I won the “Best Damascus Knife” award at ...

Wild Damascus steel. Making a blade
The process of forging the blade, making wild Damascus steel. Used steel A 485 and W 110. Hardness after quenching - 62 units. by Rockwell.
Frequently Asked Questions: The billet is soaked in kerosene. This is necessary for good welding (forging) steel. I sprinkle flux (90% borax + 5% quartz sand + 5% charcoal powder) this is necessary for forging (forge) welding. The flux is fused with scale - the formed substance is sufficiently fluid and is easily displaced by deformation. In addition, the flux protects against oxygen and charcoal, carburizes the surface layer of metal - which lowers the welding temperature (if in brief). I do not answer the question of cost - write to mail: https://sites.google.com/site/damaskshevchenko/

Needless to say, I know a thing or two about Damascus steel — and I’m packing all my knowledge into this blog post to help you understand it, too.

Syrian rebels capture Damascus, saying President Assad has fled | BBC News
Syrian rebel forces have entered Damascus amid reports that President Bashar al-Assad has fled the country by plane for an unknown destination after 13 years of civil war.
Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali says he is ready to support continuity of governance in the country.
It comes only 12 days after the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions launched a major offensive in the north-west.
The rebels first captured the second city of Aleppo and then swept southwards down the highway to the capital as the Syrian military collapsed.

I have spent the first few days of my trip in Syria in this amazing city, and I'm loving it so much that I wanted to dedicate an entire v...

Syria's capital of Damascus is widely considered as the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth, with evidence of habitation dating back (at least) 11,000 years. For all you math wizards out there, that's about 10,000 B.C.!
This is largely due to the unique positioning of the city -- in the heart of the Middle East, in the center of the world and at the intersection of 3 continents. Damascus was conquered by
Alexander the Great in 333 BCE, and since then, it's been taken over by dozens of empires such as Roman, Arab and Ottoman.
I have spent the first few days of my trip in Syria in this amazing city, and I'm loving it so much that I wanted to dedicate an entire video to show you what it's like to visit.
One thing that I didn't mention much in the video is about how SAFE it is in Damascus. I can't speak yet for the rest of Syria, but as far as this city goes (in this current day), I feel extremely safe just like I do in any other big city around the world.

Watch as a master blacksmith transforms ordinary ball bearings into a stunning Damascus steel knife. Starting with heating the bearings in a forge, he hammers them into shape with precision and skill. The highlight of the process is when he twists the glowing hot metal to create the intricate and beautiful patterns characteristic of Damascus steel. Witness the artistry and craftsmanship involved in turning raw materials into a functional and visually captivating blade.
