Sea level rise has been estimated to be on average between +2.6 millimetres (0.10in) and 2.9 millimetres (0.11in) per year ± 0.4 millimetres (0.016in) since 1993. Additionally, sea level rise has accelerated in recent years. For the period between 1870 and 2004, global average sea levels are estimated to have risen a total of 195 millimetres (7.7in), and 1.7 millimetres (0.067in) ± 0.3 millimetres (0.012in) per year, with a significant acceleration of sea-level rise of 0.013 millimetres (0.00051in) ± 0.006 millimetres (0.00024in) per year per year. According to one study of measurements available from 1950 to 2009, these measurements show an average annual rise in sea level of 1.7 millimetres (0.067in) ± 0.3 millimetres (0.012in) per year during this period, with satellite data showing a rise of 3.3 millimetres (0.13in) ± 0.4 millimetres (0.016in) per year from 1993 to 2009. Sea level rise is one of several lines of evidence that support the view that the global climate has recently warmed.
In 2014 the USGCRP National Climate Assessment projected that by the year 2100, the average sea level rise will have been
between one and four feet (300mm-1200mm) since the date of the 2014 assessment. Current rates of sea level rise have roughly doubled since the pre 1992 rates of sea level rise of the 20th century.
People have been measuring local sea level at certain locations along the coasts for hundreds of years. And NASA has been measuring the global sea level for almost three decades. Over this time, scientists have observed that the global sea level has been rising. The ocean is about 7 to 8 inches higher now than it was a century ago.
Why? Because Earth is getting warmer.
Comprehension Questions:
1. What causes the level of the water to rise and sink all day long?
2. The average height of the ocean in a particular place is called the _______ _________ ________.
3. NASA measures the average sea level of the whole ocean from space. What is another name for the average sea level of the whole ocean?

Why is Sea Level Rising? We Asked a NASA Scientist
Why is sea level rising?
Global sea levels are rising as a result of human-caused global warming, with recent rates being unprecedented over the past 2,500-plus years. NASA JPL’s sea level rise expert Ben Hamlington explains how our warming planet is causing sea levels to rise.

NASA's Earth Minute: Sea Level Rise
For over 20 years NASA has been tracking the global surface topography of the ocean in order to understand the important role it plays in our daily lives. Climate change is causing our ocean to warm and glaciers to melt, resulting in sea level rise. Since 1880, the global sea level has risen 8 inches; by 2100, it is projected to rise another 1 to 4 feet.

This is what sea level rise will do to coastal cities
Sea level rise is already redrawing coastlines around the world. What happens when the coast retreats through a major city? We look at how the world map will change in the year 2100, and what coastal cities can do to defend themselves.
Correction: An early version of this video suggested that researchers expect to see four feet of sea level rise by the end of the century. While researchers do expect to see at least that level of sea level rise in the future, the exact timing is difficult to project. We regret the error.
