Who were the Cuman-Kipchaks?
When discussing the western movements of the Mongol Empire, the Cumans and Qipchaqs appear again and again. But who were the Cuman-Kipchaks? Their history expands both before and beyond the Mongol conquest. Here, we have an overview of who they were and their origins, a group that statistically speaking, you'll know either as the guys with the mustache battle masks or from Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Who Were The Cumans (KCD Bad Guys) - Kingdom Come Deliverance History
The Cumans, (Kunok in Hungarian), were a Turkic nomadic people who, after the Mongol invasion in 1237, took refuge and moved to Hungary in 1239.
The Hungarian Kings decided to allow the Cumans to live in their territories provided that they would fight in their army. In 1400, King Sigismund of Hungary came to power, deposing his brother Wenceslas IV of Bohemia, and took control of the Cuman Army. His first order was to burn to the ground every single settlement in Bohemia who didn’t accept him as the new ruler. Dozens of villages and cities were destroyed by the Cumans, Silver Skalitz being among them, raided and razed in 1403.
The Cumans first arrived in Czech lands in 1260. Under the leadership of the Hungarian Crown Prince Stephen they fought against Bishop Bruno and the army of the A...

Cuman Diaspora in the Hungarian Kingdom: 1242-1285
The Cuman people famously fled to Hungary to escape Mongol armies in the 1230s, but did you know that was not the beginning or the end of their interaction with the Hungarian Kingdom in the thirteenth century? In this video, we look at the height of Cuman influence in Hungary in the thirteenth century, bringing greater context to the their presence earlier in the century, and see what their role was in bringing the Mongols back to Hungary in 1285- a campaign discussed in detail in the new video from Kings and Generals, which you can check out here: https://youtu.be/699KWqGfl-w
Kind thanks to my friend Michal Holeščák of the Slovak University of Sciences for his assistance with this video and advice on the Cuman people. Check out his academia.edu profile to read his articles and research, ...

Kingdom Come Deliverance The Great Cuman Philosopher of Bohemia
One of the greatest minds to ever live came to Bohemia in 1403 as a common cuman mercenary in Sigismund's army.
War was never meant for this unnamed cuman, but his knowledge was well worth sharing with the local populace of the Bohemia region.
Watch Henry, take this great cuman philosopher on a grand adventure in search of the perfect place to settle down to preach his world knowledge to the fine people of the world.
Also side note, I have no idea what I am doing...:P

Under the leadership of the Hungarian Crown Prince Stephen they fought against Bishop Bruno and the army of the Austrian lords, which they thoroughly vanquished. The Cumans appeared for the second time in the 1270s, when they defeated the army of King Piemysl Otakar and went on to pillage Moravia.
They last invaded the Czech lands under Sigismund of Luxembourg, who could afford no better mercenaries than the Cumans. Estimates speak of several thousand fighters. One of the places that succumbed to their ravages was Silver Skalitz, the birthplace of our game 's hero.

Cuman
Native to: Hungary
Region: Cumania
Ethnicity: Cumans
Extinct: 1770, with the death of István Varró
Language family: Turkic (Kipchak)
was a Kipchak Turkic language spoken by the Cumans (Polovtsy, Folban, Vallany, Kun) and Kipchaks; the language was similar to today's various languages of the Kipchak-Cuman branch. Cuman is documented in medieval works, including the Codex Cumanicus and it was a literary language in Central and Eastern Europe that left a rich literary inheritance. The language became the main language (lingua franca) of the Golden Horde.
The Cumans were nomadic people who lived on the steppes of Eastern Europe, north of the Black Sea, before the Golden Horde. Many Turkic peoples including the Crimean Tatars, Karachays, Kumyks and Balkars are descended from the Cumans. Today, the speakers of these various languages belonging to the Kipchak-Cuman branch speak variations closely related to the Cuman language.
The Cuman language became extinct in the early 17th century in the region of Cumania in Hungary, which was its last stronghold. Tradition holds that the last speaker of the Cuman language was István Varró, a resident of Karcag (Hungary) who died in 1770.
The Cuman-Kipchaks had an important role in the history of Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia, Hungary, Romania (see, for example, the Besarab dynasty), Moldavia, Bessarabia and Bulgaria.
