Crust was a musical group from Austin, Texas that was active during the late-1980s and 1990s and was featured on Trance Syndicate Records, a record label run by King Coffey from the Butthole Surfers. The groups members were John Hawkins (vocals and misc.), Jerry Page (bass and misc.), and Richard Smith (percussion and misc.).
History
John Hawkins, Jerry Page, and Richard Smith formed the group in 1987. Shortly after its formation, the trio (as "Mud Honey") organized and released a compilationcassette, The Polyp Explodes. Along with Crust, the cassette featured the Austin bands Miracle Room, Ed Hall, ST37, Seemen, and Thanatopsis Throne. The band's early instrumentation included tape loops, feedback devices, spring reverberators, and drum machines, but later incorporated traditional rock instruments such as drum kit, electric guitar, bass and keyboard.
The band embarked on a concert tour of the West Coast in December 1989. Crust achieved some notoriety for their stage antics, which frequently included live earthworms, fresh beef tongues, nudity, and fire.

Earth’s outermost layer is called the crust. It makes up only 1% of the planet’s mass. Humans live on the continental crust and below the sea is the oceanic crust.
Oceanic crust is made of different types of basalts.
At the ocean floor, the crust can be as little as 3 miles thick. Underwater mountain ranges, where tectonic plates pull apart from each other, causes oceanic crust to form.
Oceanic crust is destroyed in subduction zones, where one tectonic plate slides under another. Denser oceanic crust subducts beneath continental crust.
Continental crust is mostly formed from different types of granites. Earth’s tallest mountain ranges are where the crust is thickest. Nearly 45 miles deep.
Cratons are the oldest and most stable areas of continental crust. They are divided into two types: shields and platforms.
Shields are ancient rocks in the interior of continents exposed to the atmosphere. Platforms are where the oldest underlying rock formations, or basement rock, is buried in sediment.
Continental crust is usually older than oceanic crust since it is rarely destroyed or recycled during subduction.
