Notorious Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast - Martin McGuinness, Michael Stone, Bobby Sands spent time here
Today we’re visiting Crumlin Road Gaol, or as we called it ‘The Crum’. The Gaol was actually called HMP Belfast, but this is the Crumlin Road and obviously that’s lent its name to the Gaol.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

Crumlin Road Gaol Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
A visit to Crumlin Road Gaol is a unique opportunity to explore a piece of history.
This forbidding building opened in 1845 and closed in 1996, and it is the lone remaining Victorian gaol in Northern Ireland. It stands across the road from the old Crumlin Road Courthouse, which is no longer in use. An underground tunnel connects the two complexes, and prisoners often went back and forth to stand trial.
Over the course of its 150-year history, Crumlin Road Gaol saw over 25,000 prisoners pass through its walls, a handful of which staged escape attempts. You can learn about these escape attempts and the gaol’s history of executions during your Crumlin Road Gaol sightseeing; we recommend checking with the gaol to find out when guided tours are available. In addition, the facility also hosts...

You can see the former Courthouse, the grand but derelict building on the left and then facing it on the right we have the old Victorian gaol constructed in 1846. There’s a tunnel running under the road here that was used to take remand prisoners directly from the Gaol to face their fate in the court room. And as we enter from the side of the Gaol, you get some idea of the security that existed here. Even by prison standards The Crum would had to have been doubly secure because of the role it played in incarcerating paramilitary prisoners during the Troubles.
IRA leader Martin McGuinness, later N. Ireland’s Deputy First Minister, notorious UDA member Michael Stone and the Republican hunger Striker Bobby Sands all spent time in here along with many other paramilitaries. And going back further, in 1924 Éamon de Valera spent a month in solitary confinement here after being arrested for entering N. Ireland illegally. He was later to become Ireland’s Taoiseach.
Now the prison closed in 1996 and it’s now a museum and events venue and it’s to see a concert that I’m visiting this evening, so we’ll be able to get inside and see a bit of the old Victorian architecture – It’s a grade A listed building. As you can see there’s lots of other people here for the same reason.
You might be surprised to learn that the prison was designed by Charles Lanyon, architect of the Queens University Lanyon Building amongst other notable Belfast constructions. The design was partly based on HMP Pentonville. It was built to house around 475 prisoners, but at a Red Cross inspection in 1971, while the place was used to intern prisoners without trail, they found 864 inmates. It would be pretty bleak if you’d been innocently interned here, as many people were, and had to live in those conditions.
We’re heading now to the main entrance to the prison. This is where it all starts to look a bit more theme park and less prison like. You can probably guess that during its time as a prison it wouldn’t have looked quite like this. You’ll notice the touristy signage and the new glass entrance added to the gate lodge for example, but you still get a feel of the robustness of the place with its severe and thick basalt stone walls. But, it’s great to see this building, that was presumably such a dark place in the past, being enjoyed now in its new capacity by Belfast’s citizens and tourists from all over the world. We’re now looking at the Governor’s corridor which leads down to the prison wings A, B, C and D, which fan out from The Circle – we’ll see that in a minute. But, first let’s look at the renovated Gate lodge, designed now presumably to welcome people rather than to put the fear of God in them. As we walk through you get a really good view of the Court House opposite, but as I mentioned earlier, prisoners would have been taken through the tunnel for their court appearances.
As we round the corner past the Café, it’s difficult to imagine the incarcerated having the use of these picnic tables to eat their lovely sandwiches.
This prison was built to replace Carrickfergus prison and in 1846 the first inmates, who were men women and children were marched in chains from Carrick to their new home her in the Crum. Many convicts were guilty of little else than having stolen some food – incarcerated effectively for being poor. The gaol also conducted executions and had gallows installed for this purpose. In total 17 people were executed here in the prison’s history, the last being in 1961.
Were now in what’s known as the Circle, the entrance to the prison’s 4 wings. As you can see it’s nicely lit tonight for this evening’s concert and the audience is gathering in expectation. While it’s an austere place, there’s also a beauty in the ironwork on the landings and the plastered archways. The Victorian’s were great builders.
Leaving the concert at the end of the night I have to reflect on the atmosphere a venue like that has.

Do you have a plan regarding the things you are going to do in Belfast when your vacation starts? Since we are recently trying to visit the most important attractions and landmarks to be placed on your list, we decided to visit the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and suggest it to those coming to the city very soon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kX_5KuuSUE).
Crumlin Road Gaol - or as it is sometimes referred to as "Her Majesty's Prison Belfast" - has been built as a replacement for the County Gaol on Antrim street in Carrickfergus; this jail was known as County Gaol for Antrim and it was constructed of black balsalt rock on ten acres at the bottom of the Crumlin Road (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbjPuUez7L4).
The Crumlin Road Gaol was one of the most advanced prisons back when it was first built, which was built within a five sided wall and the four wings are up to four storeys in height and fan off from the central area which was known as The Circle.
When the Crumlin Road Jail was built, it was actually brought to life depending on the idea of separate cells, which means that the prisoners will be separated from one another without any kind of communication, but later on it started to put up to three prisoners in the same cell. The prison as a whole was ready to receive between 500 and 550 prisoners.
There were many famous prisoners placed in the Crumlin Road Gaol back in the old days since it was open until the end of the Troubles period (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmyfPdDIgGU) before its doors were totally closed in 1994 for almost two years and before it was transformed to a touristic attraction in Belfast for the tourists to come and know more about its history.
The Crumlin Road Gaol is a 19th century A listed jail that welcomes lots of tourists nowadays who come inside to try and picture the life of those prisoners who spent a great part of their lives there. The guided tour inside the jail will bring the visitors through the cells and will also take them through the tunnel that links the courthouse on the other side to the Governor's office, the hanging cell, the hospital and the graveyard; this tunnel was used to take the prisoners to the courthouse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXh9QicXsq8).
The guided tour which usually lasts for 70 minutes inside the jail is the most famous thing related to this place that turned into a touristic attraction, but there are actually some events and concerts that are held inside this place as well; private events and public concerts.
In this prison which worked for almost 150 years, visitors will step inside to experience how the life of those murderers, suffragettes and loyalist, and republican prisoners were passing the days inside; they will be taken through the C-Wing, the Condemned Man's Cell where 17 men spent their last days before being executed, and also they will visit the gravesite where the remains of 15 men of the executed still remains.
It was interesting to walk in the same place where the prisoners used to spend many days of their lives and also the place that witnessed births, deaths, marriages, and lots of other things due to the inability for those prisoners to get outside; and yes, there were females being placed in this jail as well.
We could say that this could go as one of the tourist attractions that people could place as one of the things to do in Belfast because for a specific period of time it was considered one of the most famous jails in Europe and which has been holding prisoners for many years.
We enjoyed the guided tour we have taken inside the Crumlin Road Gaol and we might even think about coming back in the future. Unfortunately the courthouse is not open and is not welcoming any visitors because it is undergoing some reconstructions to surprise us with a new place in the coming years.
It is always interesting to get to eat in the same touristic place which you are visiting or even close to the area and since you will be visiting the Crumlin Road Gaol, you could try The Cuffs Bar & Grill (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3tQpHPG-LA) which is found inside the place and which offers the best burger in town as well as other dishes, desserts, and things to drink (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orv5lTl9teY); even the name of the restaurant gives you the feeling that you are having your prison's meal.
The Crumlin Road Gaol was one of the different other touristic destinations and attractions in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which we were lucky enough to plan our schedule and head to in order to check and visit. From the other famous landmarks of Belfast, you could visit Belfast City Hall (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0tsLMZf2PE), you could go and check the famous St. Anne's Cathedral (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k63KxsVKNi4), or go and visit the famous Belfast Castle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izfYckbUiKE).

Have you ever been to this prison? Tell us more about your personal feedback.

HMP Belfast, otherwise called Crumlin Road Gaol, is a previous jail arranged on the Crumlin Road in north Belfast, Northern Ireland. Since 1996 it is the last Victorian period previous jail in Northern Ireland. It is informally known as the Crum.
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has given it a grade A recorded structure status on account of its design and verifiable importance. The Crumlin Road Courthouse, neglected since it conclusion, remains inverse the Gaol with a passage under the primary street associating the two structures and utilized beforehand to move the detainees between the two structures.

In addition, the facility also hosts conferences and concerts throughout the year.

Designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, Crumlin Road Gaol prison was built between 1843 and 1845 and cost £60,000. Built as a replacement for the County Gaol on Antrim Street in Carrickfergus, it was constructed of black basalt rock on ten acres at the bottom of the Crumlin Road and was one of the most advanced prisons of its day.
The prison was originally built to hold between 500 and 550 prisoners in cells that measured 12 x 7 feet, (365 cm x 213 cm). It was the first prison in Ireland to be built according to "The Separate System", intended to separate prisoners from each other with no communication between them. Later, especially in the early 1970s, as many as three prisoners were placed in each cell.
In 1924, Éamon de Valera (third President of Ireland) was arrested in Newry for "illegally entering Northern Ireland" and held in solitary confinement for a month in Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast.

Crumlin Road Gaol Belfast - Crumlin Road Prison - Things to do in Belfast - Crumlin Northern Ireland
Explore the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland opened in 1845 and it has a deep and dark history. A wonderful Belfast tour full of facts, history, culture and plenty of drama -17 men have been executed over its 150 year history. During the tour you will see what prison life was like through the ages as well as the dark secrets that lie within; Definitely something different.
The Crumlin Road Gaol is known to be a 19th century Grade A listed jail which is open to the public for guided tours, concerts, and events. The most interesting thing about visiting this jail is trying to picture the experience of those prisoners who spent most of their lives there and getting the permission to inspect the tunnel linking the courthouse on the other side of the Crumlin Road to the hanging cell, Governor's office, hospital and graveyard.
There is a guided tour inside the place where the visitor will be informed with the history of the place and this will always give the visitor the chance to experience how the life of the prisoners was like - of course through spending only 70 minutes inside and not years :-)
Inside the Crumlin Road Prison, there is a cell known as "C-Wing" which visitors are always keen about exploring and seeing how the life was like back there through the ages and even explore the black secret that is hidden behind it. In addition to that, the visitors will be taken to the Condemned Man's Cell during their journey inside the prison; this is the cell where 17 men spent their last days in before being executed. The last interesting place for visitors to check inside this prison and which they are usually taken to is the gravesite within, where the remains of the 15 executed men still remain till today.
Learn about 'The Troubles' and the Northern Ireland Conflict as many prisoners were heavily involved in Northern Ireland politics or even catch a paranormal tour - ghosts are reported to linger in the dark tunnel and basement under the jail. Are you brave enough to explore during a ghost tour ? Can you stomach some paranormal activity?
The Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is open during the seven days of the week except on the Christmas day, the boxing day, and the New Year's day - you wont be even thinking about visiting the place during these days. The entrance fees for the Crumlin Road prison differ according to the age; it is 9 pounds for adults, 6.50 for children from 5 to 15 years old and free for those who are under 5 years old, and 25 pounds for families.
The 'Crum' also hosts a range of fabulous events from Elvis tribute nights to conferences. With a wide range of conference rooms and facilities; The Crumlin Gaol has it all!
There are different events that take place inside the Crumlin Road - for some it might not be a very good idea but for others it is the best place they could choose to be more different - these different events might range between meetings and conferences, fundraising events, private parties, and weddings - yes, you will be jailed in another home after your wedding :-) And just beside these events, there are those musical parties which could take their place inside the Crumlin Road Gaol.
These are all things related to the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, but for those who are only considering the idea of enjoying a tour at the place, they should know that there is a cafe for them to have something to drink and there is also the Cuffs Bar and Grill (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3tQpHPG-LA) which is taking the atmosphere of the place and in which they could have a juicy burger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orv5lTl9teY).
There are different places one could visit when it comes to Belfast, Northern Ireland, and the Crumlin Road Gaol is just one of them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kX_5KuuSUE), but since we are at the capital city of Northern Ireland then we should mention some of the other attractions and landmarks related to this beautiful city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5BzwwXmA-A).
In Belfast, Northern Ireland, one could also visit the City Hall which recently opened a new exhibition (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xerUnb-lmjM), there is also St. Anne's Cathderal which is considered one of the important spots related to this city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k63KxsVKNi4), one could also go and check the Titanic Museum in Belfast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkn54nBH1Fs), go through a walk in the city to explore it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiUR8SoBens), or else check the SS Nomadic ship which is considered the small sister of RMS Titanic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUWJW-etODc).
There are lots of touristic things to do in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to check and enjoy. If you have been to Belfast, one of the busiest cities in Europe, then tell us more about your visit to the Crumlin Road Gaol Prison.

The Black Ferns Took Over Our Café in London ☕️🏉
Ahead of their clash with England at Twickenham, the Black Ferns visited our café in Putney for a special day behind the bar. We taught them how to make amazing coffee — and hundreds of local Kiwis came through to hang out, grab a flat white, and be served by New Zealand’s rugby legends.
A special moment of community, culture, and caffeine in South West London.

For around thirty years, Belfast was shaken by The Troubles: an armed conflict between the Irish and British communities of Northern Ireland.
25 years after the Good Friday Agreement, which ended most of the violence, these divisions live on in people's minds and in the city's architecture, where catholic and protestant districts are still divided by walls and gates.
We met Catherine, 24, an Irish nationalist, and Joel, 22, a British-Irish unionist, who told us how they live with the legacy of the Troubles today.

Lyrics:
Belfast
Belfast
Belfast
Got to have a believin'
Got to have a believin'
Got to have a believin'
All the people
Cause the people are leavin'
When the people believin'
When the people believin'
When the people believin'
All the children cause the children
Are leavin'
Belfast
Belfast
When the country rings the leaving bell you're lost
Belfast
Belfast
When the hate you have
For one another's past
You can try (You can try)
You can try (You can try)
You can try
To tell the world the reason why
Belfast
Belfast
Belfast
It's the country that's changin'
It's the country that's changin'
It's the country that's changin'
All the people
Cause the people are leavin'
It's the world that's deceivin'
It's the world that's deceivin'
It's the world that's deceivin'
All the people
Cause the people believin'
When the children believin'
When the children believin'
When the children believin'
All the people
Cause the people are leavin'
When the people are leavin' (you)
When the people are leavin'
When the people are leavin'
All the children
Cause the children believin'

Join us on our first visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland! We explore St. George's Market and try delicious breakfast baps on soda bread, discover the historic Cathedral Quarter, enjoy our first proper Guinness at The Dirty Onion (Belfast's oldest building), and visit the Titanic Belfast museum. We fell in love with the Victorian splendor of The Crown Liquor Saloon with its famous snugs, check out the peaceful Botanic Gardens and nearby Ulster Museum. We also sample local dishes, visit City Hall, and try locals' recommendations of the best places to enjoy a pint in this friendly city.
We know we have so much more of Northern Ireland we need to see. Let us know what we must do on a future trip!

MAMAS BOYS BELFAST CITY BLUES 1980 (Official Bootleg Album )
Mamas Boys were a 1980's hard rock/heavy metal band from Co Fermanagh. Although excellent traditional musicians, the highly talented McManus brothers Pat,John and Tommy, heavily influenced by the sounds of Horslips, introduced their own take on rock music. Also, the brothers, particularly Pat,were credible songwriters. They remained highly popular until Tommys sad death in 1994. 'Belfast City Blues',written by Pat,was/is a very emotional song reflecting the confusions, particularly of young people,in a society governed by death, bombs, bigotry, sectarianism, prejudice and hate which encapsulated religion and politics. The McManus brothers were non political, they had no axe to grind. They were musicians.Through this medium of music,'Belfast City Blues' simply spoke to thousands offering them solidarity a...

They were musicians.Through this medium of music,'Belfast City Blues' simply spoke to thousands offering them solidarity and a sense that they were not alone in their thoughts during troubled times. The song is a classic. This video presentation is for educational and social purposes only.No copyright infringement is intended.
