Creation from the Void: Crash Course World Mythology #2
Today on Crash Course Mythology we’re starting in on creation stories. This week, we’ll focus on the creation of the universe out of nothing, or Ex Nihlio creation. Basically, a god decides to make a universe out of nothing. We’ll look at the Genesis story (which has nothing to do with Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins), a Mayan creation tale, a Kono story of the beginning, and we’ll even look at the Big Bang.

The Gnostic Creation Story
Before the establishment of the Roman Orthodox church, dating back to the first century A.D., the Gnostics were a sect of Christians with a very different set of beliefs from what the new blossoming religion of Christianity would soon become. The Gnostics insisted they were in fact the original Christians and that the Roman church were imposters co-opting and changing their mythology. Many original founders like Marcion and Tatian were actually devout Gnostics who would later leave the Orthodoxy claiming the church was “setting up the fraud of historic Christianity.” Gnosticism continued to flourish alongside the Roman church until it was declared heresy and outlawed by Emperor Constantine in 325 A.D. Once the Orthodox Bible became canonized, all extra-biblical gnostic gospels were con...

The OLDEST Creation MYTH in World, and its Origins
The first and oldest stories in the world maybe lost to us, but we can reconstruct them by finding their motifs and piecing them together. In this video I look at the earliest creation myth motifs, focused particularly on the Earth Diver and Tree of Life, to do this. I will tell a few different creation stories, and discuss how motifs have evolved, mixed, and dispersed. And finally I tell a story, reconstructed from all these motifs.

Creation, the beginning of the world, and the story of everything is something that is always on our minds. You have likely never heard of the Australian aboriginal creation story of the Father of All Spirits and the Sun Mother. Similarly the Pangu myth of Chinese daoists is one we had never heard of. You may be more familiar with the Mayan creation story of Tepeu and Gucmatz or the Cherokee creation story of the Earth island. By far our favorite god stories are the those from Asia, like the Korean Cheonjiwang Bonpuli and the Japanese creation story of Izanami and Izanagi. Are you ready to learn something new? The first and oldest stories in the world maybe lost to us, but we can reconstruct them by finding their motifs and piecing them together. In this video I look at the earliest creation myth motifs, focused particularly on the Earth Diver and Tree of Life, to do this. I will tell a few different creation stories, and discuss how motifs have evolved, mixed, and dispersed. And finally I tell a story, reconstructed from all these motifs.
