Crater-class cargo ship is a category of freighter that was constructed for use by the United States Navy during World War II under Maritime Commission EC2-S-C1 type.
The class was named for the lead ship of its type, USSCrater(AK-70). There were a total of 62 ships of this class built, the largest count of U.S. Navy cargo ship classes.
The ships were propelled by a reciprocating steam engine using a single screw with a power of 1,950hp (1,454kW) shaft.
A cargo ship or freighter is any sort of ship or vessel that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of cargo carriers ply the world's seas and oceans each year, handling the bulk of international trade. Cargo ships are usually specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes. Today, they are almost always built by welded steel, and with some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped.
Types
Cargo ships/freighters can be divided into five groups, according to the type of cargo they carry. These groups are:

Life Inside The World's Largest Container Ship
When the first ship of the brand-new OOCL-fleet begins its journey, more cargo is moved at one time than anywhere else in the world and ever before. The vessels are the largest ever constructed - 400 meters long and about as wide as a football field (58.8 meters).
Mega Transports look at the vehicles that transport exceptionally large and demanding cargos across the planet; these journeys require precise planning, which can only take place with special safety precautions and for which large teams plan months in advance.

Onboard cameras captured the shocking moment a cargo ship was broken in two by a huge wave off Turkey's Black Sea province of Bartin earlier this month.
Three sailors died when the Ukrainian-owned Arvin sank in heavy seas on Jan. 16 after the wave snapped its keel near the bow.
The Turkish Maritime Authority released the video, which also recorded crew members making a mayday call for help on the voyage between Georgia and Bulgaria.

A search operation rescued the other members of the mainly Ukrainian crew.
