What is culture? How do we define it and how does it change? We’ll explore different categories of culture, like low culture, high culture, and sub-cultures. We'll also revisit our founding theories to consider both a structural functionalist and a conflict theory perspective on what cultures mean for society.

The New Counterculture
Nowadays, being subversive means telling the truth, sticking to your word, having discipline, and valuing long-term relationships and friendships. This was always going to happen when being a rebel without a cause got old and self-destructive.

From Counterculture to Culture Wars | US Political Polarization
Culture became a battleground in America throughout the second half of the twentieth century. From the Counterculture, New Left, Neoconservativism, and Religious Right - these clashes came to define a new political system that developed by 1980 which we still inhabit in the United States. This was what Prussians called kulturkampf, or culture war, which continues unabated to this day.

Wiki: The counterculture of the 1960s was an anti-establishment cultural phenomenon that developed throughout much of the Western world between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s.[3] The aggregate movement gained momentum as the U.S. Civil Rights Movement continued to grow, and, with the expansion of the American Government's extensive military intervention in Vietnam, would later become revolutionary to some.[4][5][6] As the 1960s progressed, widespread social tensions also developed concerning other issues, and tended to flow along generational lines regarding human sexuality, women's rights, traditional modes of authority, experimentation with psychoactive drugs, and differing interpretations of the American Dream. Many key movements related to these issues were born or advanced within the counterculture of the 1960s
Pat Buchanan argued that on an increasing number of "hot-button" defining issues—abortion, gun politics, separation of church and state, privacy, recreational dr*g use, hom*sexuality, censorship—there existed two definable polarities. Furthermore, not only were there a number of divisive issues, but society had divided along essentially the same lines on these issues, so as to constitute two warring groups, defined primarily not by nominal religion, ethnicity, social class, or even political affiliation, but rather by ideological world-views

In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 12 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).
In the 1960s the counterculture movement began in earnest among America's youth. Some young people got involved politically either to endorse or oppose the Vietnam War. Those who supported rallied to the college group Young Adults for Freedom and those who opposed it joined the more left leaning Students for a Democratic Society whose beliefs were published in the Port Huron Statement.
Additionally, antiwar protests reached a fever pitch in the Kent State Massacre in which several university students were killed by the National Guard.
But in general, youth culture simply rejected the prim and proper ways of the previous generation. The fine tuned voices of folks like Frank Sinatra were traded for the rough authenticity of singers like Bob Dylan. The hippie was the iconic representation of the counterculture during this time and the crowning achievement of this movement was the Woodstock Music Festival.
