PRI: How to save endangered species
A study by 170 scientists presented at a United Nations summit in Japan has some bleak environmental news. One out of every five mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians is likely to go extinct. Humans can save endangered species, according to new research, but they need to take a wide view of the problem. A report from The Takeaway, http://www.thetakeaway.org

We need a radically new approach to ocean conservation, says marine biologist and TED Fellow Alasdair Harris. In a visionary talk, he lays out a surprising solution to the problem of overfishing that could both revive marine life and rebuild local fisheries -- all by taking less from the ocean. The Evidence Effect: How a conservation revolution is protecting biodiversity
Sir David Attenborough and BBC presenter Iolo Williams introduce ‘The Evidence Effect’, a film about a conservation revolution that’s helping to protect biodiversity across our planet.
We face both the ‘sixth mass extinction’ of biodiversity and an ‘evidence emergency’ stopping us from conserving it in the way we need for the future of the planet. But change is afoot.
A new approach led by researchers in Cambridge is based on a free online resource called ‘Conservation Evidence’ – the largest authoritative collection of evidence on what works and why in conservation.
It’s being used by conservationists globally to work out what to do for the best chances of protecting particular species and habitats.
Professor Bill Sutherland, who leads the Cambridge team behind the project, says: ...

Abu Dhabi's refuge for endangered species | DW Documentary
The Arabian oryx is a beautiful, almost luminously white antelope. But, after being over-hunted by humans in the 20th century, it only narrowly escaped extinction. Today, on the desert island of Sir Bani Yas, the endangered animals find refuge.
Part of an archipelago west of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas is home to a large wildlife reserve, where animals from Arabia, Asia and Africa roam freely. You can watch cheetahs hunting, and imagine how the Bedouins once lived, under open desert skies.
Established in the 1970s, extensive ecological measures turned Sir Bani Yas into a man-made "paradise for wild animals." Now, the reserve stands for the region’s desire for a sustainable future. It’s also a great place to see the magnificent Arabian oryx running free, once more.

We need a radically new approach to ocean conservation, says marine biologist and TED Fellow Alasdair Harris. In a visionary talk, he lays out a surprising solution to the problem of overfishing that could both revive marine life and rebuild local fisheries -- all by taking less from the ocean. "When we design it right, marine conservation reaps dividends that go far beyond protecting nature," he says.

Professor Bill Sutherland, who leads the Cambridge team behind the project, says: “With Conservation Evidence, it takes less than a minute to look up whether something is effective, and just a few more to find an alternative intervention if it’s not.”
In collaboration with an international group of experts, Sutherland's team summarised evidence for the effectiveness of thousands of conservation interventions, which involved scanning over 1.6 million papers. Conservation Evidence has also brought together a group of ‘Evidence Champions’ who have signed commitments to use the resource in their decision-making for new projects.

Professor Bill Sutherland, who leads the Cambridge team behind the project, says: “With Conservation Evidence, it takes less than a minute to look up whether something is effective, and just a few more to find an alternative intervention if it’s not.”

Nick Bubb gives us an overview of the state of wildlife conservation in the world today. He explains why there is still a lot to be done and how governments, companies and citizens need to work together to protect our environment and critically endangered species. Wildlife conservation provides jobs, improves livelihoods and helps to address the effects of environmental and social changes.
Nick Bubb heads up Global Development at Fauna & Flora International (FFI), the world's oldest international wildlife conservation charity. FFI supports a great number of conservation programs in 47 countries, which integrate scientific expertise and local community engagement.
Nick's varied background includes significant time spent as an: engineer, professional ocean racer, sports sponsorship expert and wealth manager. After an expedition to Antarctica in 2012 and seeing the first-hand effects of climate change, Nick decided to leave the world of financial management behind and combine all his skills, experiences & networks, and dedicate himself to environmental causes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
