Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources.
For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware and frequently makes system calls to an OS function or is interrupted by it. Operating systems are found on many devices that contain a computer– from cellular phones and video game consoles to web servers and supercomputers.
FlexOS was a modular real-time multi-user multi-tasking operating system (RTOS) designed for computer-integrated manufacturing, laboratory, retail and financial markets. It was developed by Digital Research's Flexible Automation Business Unit in Monterey, California since 1986 and was marketed since January 1987 as a reengineered derivation of Digital Research's Concurrent DOS 286 multiuser multitasking operating system.
Overview
FlexOS was re-written in C for higher portability across hardware platforms, and it featured very low interrupt latency and fast context switching.
The original protected mode FlexOS 286 version 1.0 was designed for host machines equipped with 286 CPUs, and with adaptations for NEC V60, NEC V70 and Motorola 68000 processors planned. FlexOS 286 executables using the system's native INT DCh (INT 220) application program interface had the filename extension .286. A CP/M API front end (FE) was available as well, using the extension .CMD for executables. (A filename extension of .68K was reserved for FlexOS 68K, presumably derived from Concurrent DOS 68K as of 1986.)
4690 Operating System, sometimes shortened to 4690 OS or 4690 is a specially designed Point of Saleoperating system, originally sold by IBM; however, in 2012 IBM sold its retail business, including this product, to Toshiba, who now supports it. 4690 is widely used by IBM's retail customers to drive retail systems running their own applications as well as IBM's Application Client Server Environment (ACE), Supermarket Application (SA), General Sales Application (GSA), and Chain Drug Sales Application (CDSA).
It is the follow-on product to IBM 4680 OS, which had been in use by IBM's customers since 1986. The original IBM 4680 OS was based on either Digital Research's Concurrent DOS 286 or FlexOS 286, developed in 1986 as a derivation of Concurrent DOS 286 and introduced in early 1987.
In July 1993 IBM adopted FlexOS version 2.32 as the basis of their IBM 4690 OS Version 1. FlexOS 2.32 supported 286 and 386 modes and had no limit on applications running concurrently.
According to "The Year of the Store?", IHL Consulting Group/RIS News, IBM 4690 OS still had a market share of 12% in the POS register/client market in June 2005, when IBM was starting to phase it out in favour to IBM Retail Environment for SUSE (IRES).
Whether you have a laptop, desktop, smartphone, or tablet, your device has an operating system (also known as an "OS"). In this video we'll show you what an operating system is and talk about a few of the most common operating systems.
We'll also talk about compatibility issues. Some software is designed to work with a variety of operating systems, but other software may only run on one or two.

So as you may have noticed from last episode, computers keep getting faster and faster, and by the start of the 1950s they had gotten so fast that it often took longer to manually load programs via punch cards than to actually run them! The solution was the operating system (or OS), which is just a program with special privileges that allows it to run and manage other programs. So today, we’re going to trace the development of operating systems from the Multics and Atlas Supervisor to Unix and MS-DOS, and take at look at how these systems heavily influenced popular OSes like Linux, Windows, MacOS, and Android that we use today.

The topic discussed is Introduction to operating system and its functionalities. In this video first we'll see introduction to operating system and then we'll discuss what are the functionalities of operating system .So what operating system basically is? Operating system is a system software. Means it's a software ,which is in your system. And its basic functionality or definition is.... It works as a interface between user and hardware. It's in very simple language that operating system is providing interaction between user and hardware.

Unlike traditional computers that operate on a binary system of 1s and 0s, quantum computers utilise the principles of quantum mechanics to achieve vastly superior computational capabilities.
are safety devices employed in electrical systems to guard equipment and people against electrical hazards ... ACBs have a special system to quickly put out this arc ... This is often done through a computer system or a special control panel.
In the Autonomous Era of software engineering, the role of a software engineer will likely transform from being the author of computer code to being the operator of a code generating machine.
... through its design of Pegasus.” By the company’s own admission, installing the spyware through WhatsApp was “a matter for NSO and the system to take care of, not a matter for customers to operate.”.
... computing systems ... Spectral's Plasmonic CMOS devices already outperform cryogenic systems by achieving room-temperature operation while computing and transmitting data at nearly the speed of light.

This dynamic allocation system ... The framework's success in reducing downtime and operational costs while improving system reliability marks a significant milestone in cloud computing disaster recovery.
Through multiple iterations, the system ... Unlike traditional serial computational models, Hinton’s framework shows that visual systems operate through the simultaneous interaction of multiple units.
That brick gets chopped up into plastic pellets, dyed and remolded into new plastic products, most commonly picture frames and computer parts ... Those will have their data destroyed and new operations systems installed.
New Aircraft Systems Modeling ... I’m careful not to demand simplicity from a complex system that can be tailored to your specific computer’s operating system, but going deep into the graphics settings remains above my experience level.
... would come from a “reduction in overlapping roles across the combined insurance operations”, cutting “duplicative” jobs running back office computer systems, and in corporate and head office roles.
Whether it's Windows, macOS, iOS or Android, simply keeping your operating system and apps up-to-date will help protect your family's computers and devices against a surprising number of security threats, such as malware, viruses and exploits.
