Comet Shoemaker–Levy9 (formally designatedD/1993F2) was a comet that broke apart and collided with Jupiter in July 1994, providing the first direct observation of an extraterrestrial collision of Solar System objects. This generated a large amount of coverage in the popular media, and the comet was closely observed by astronomers worldwide. The collision provided new information about Jupiter and highlighted its role in reducing space debris in the inner Solar System.
The comet was discovered by astronomers Carolyn and Eugene M. Shoemaker and David Levy. Shoemaker–Levy 9, at the time captured by and orbiting Jupiter, was located on the night of March 24, 1993, in a photograph taken with the 40cm (16in)Schmidt telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California. It was the first comet observed to be orbiting a planet, and had probably been captured by the planet around 20 – 30 years earlier.
Calculations showed that its unusual fragmented form was due to a previous closer approach to Jupiter in July 1992. At that time, the orbit of Shoemaker–Levy 9 passed within Jupiter's Roche limit, and Jupiter's tidal forces had acted to pull apart the comet. The comet was later observed as a series of fragments ranging up to 2km (1.2mi) in diameter. These fragments collided with Jupiter's southern hemisphere between July 16 and July 22, 1994, at a speed of approximately 60km/s (37mi/s) or 216,000km/h (134,000mph). The prominent scars from the impacts were more easily visible than the Great Red Spot and persisted for many months.

Jupiter's BIGGEST Impact EVER! Shoemaker Levy 9 Comet Crash
In July 1994, a vast comet 2 km in diameter hit Jupiter with the force of 300 million atomic bombs, followed by another 20 impacts that set fire to the clouds of the gaseous planet for six successive days. This was the first time in history that humanity managed to witness live what a planetary collision of colossal magnitudes can do. What happened to Jupiter after impact, and what have we learned since then?
let's go to start! "Introduction"
THE GREAT DISCOVERY
In 1993 a group of astronomers formed by the couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy was conducting research at the Palomar Observatory in California in the USA, when they discovered a massive spot by pure chance in the image records.
It was nothing more and nothing less than a vast periodic comet 2 km in diameter that had been captured by the gravitational pull of Jupiter, which was named Shoemaker-Levy9 in honor of the discoverers. This was an extremely unusual event because although hundreds of comets are known in the solar system, this was the first time that one captured by the gravity of a planet instead of the gravity of the sun was observed.
Usually, periodic comets are those that orbit the sun in less than 200 years, but Jupiter is so massive and its gravitational attraction force so great that it can capture any object that gets too close to it; in fact, astronomers believe that many of its moons are asteroids that were captured by Jupiter and never managed to escape its gravitational field.
The image of the discovery gave the first proof that it was a strange comet since it had multiple nuclei in a region approximately 50 arcseconds long; for reference, common comets usually have a single nucleus. In contrast, Shoemaker-Levy9 had about 20, which indicated that something must have happened in the past that fragmented it into several pieces.

The most amazing thing about Jupiter for us Earthlings is that there is no place to stand. We see nothing but clouds and hurricanes the size of Earth, we don’t see the ground because there is no ground.
For five billion years an icy juggernaut had roamed the backstreets of the Solar System flaring only as it swept close to the heat of the sun. But Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 hadn’t reckoned on the mighty power of the planet Jupiter. Jupiter, the king of the planets, destroyer of comets.
The broken fragments of Shoemaker-Levy 9 were big enough to remodel life on Earth. Each was being sucked in by the largest planet in the Solar System, each of their fiery descents was another chance to find out what it’s really like on Jupiter.
The impact of SL9 highlighted Jupiter's role as a "cosmic vacuum cleaner" for the inner Solar System. The planet's strong gravitational influence leads to many comets and asteroids colliding with the planet. If Jupiter were not present, the probability of asteroid impacts with the Solar System's inner planets would be much greater.
For millennia the bright beacon of Jupiter has caught the human gaze as it has travelled the heavens, but we had to wait for the invention of the telescope and a renaissance Italian for the planet to begin giving up its secrets. On the night of 7th January 1610 Galileo Galilei made a discovery that was to challenge Earth’s claim to sovereignty of the solar system.
Jupiter’s dominance of the Solar System is complete, 1,300 times the size of Earth, it’s a world so enormous it could swallow every planet and moon in the solar system an still have room to spare. Looking back from Jupiter the Earth is a feeble speck circling a faint and distant sun
Documentary narrated by John Hurt.

25 years ago, humanity had its first glimpse of a cosmic collision when comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter — and the whole world watched. We’ve seen evidence of impacts all throughout our solar system, but we had never before been able to watch an impact while it was happening.
And, it was a wake-up call… Today NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office has its eyes to the sky detecting and tracking potentially hazardous and near-Earth objects. Explore more: http://www.nasa.gov/planetarydefense

Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare...

Who can forget when in 1994 over 20 fragments of Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 – dubbed ‘string of pearls’ – slammed into Jupiter’s cloud-tops, producing a series of dark scars on the planet’s southern hemisphere, the largest of which persisted for months.
Its gravity can fling these tiny objects towards our inner solar system and also draw them into itself, as famously observed in 1994 when Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, drawn towards Jupiter in previous orbits, smashed into the gas giant's atmosphere.
His career included selecting and training Apollo astronauts in lunar geology and impact cratering, leading NASA's search for water at the lunar poles, and co-discovering Comet Shoemaker-Levy, the ...

Back in 1994, the gas giant was pelted with pieces of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 over the course of several days, an event that according to NASA left "huge, dark scars in the planet's atmosphere and lofting superheated plumes into its stratosphere."
“Comets are like cats,” David H Levy said, “They both have tails and do precisely what they want.” As co-discoverer of many comets - including Shoemaker-Levy 9, made famous for smashing into Jupiter before the eyes of the world - Levy should know.
Many quasi-Hilda comets that briefly break free of their resonance end up splattering into Jupiter, probably including the most famous comet to die by Jupiter impact, Shoemaker-Levy 9. .
