Civil disobedience is the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government, or of an occupying international power. Civil disobedience is a symbolic or ritualistic violation of the law, rather than a rejection of the system as a whole. Civil disobedience is sometimes, though not always, defined as being nonviolent resistance.
Civil disobedience is the active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government or of an occupying power, usually without resorting to physical violence.
Resistance to Civil Government (Civil Disobedience) is an essay by American transcendentalistHenry David Thoreau that was first published in 1849. In it, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican–American War (1846-1848).
Title
In 1848, Thoreau gave lectures at the Concord Lyceum entitled "The Rights and Duties of the Individual in relation to Government." This formed the basis for his essay, which was first published under the title Resistance to Civil Government in 1849 in an anthology called Æsthetic Papers. The latter title distinguished Thoreau's program from that of the "non-resistants" (anarcho-pacifists) who were expressing similar views. Resistance also served as part of Thoreau's metaphor comparing the government to a machine: when the machine was producing injustice, it was the duty of conscientious citizens to be "a counter friction" (i.e., a resistance) "to stop the machine."
Henry David Thoreau not only wrote Walden; he is also responsible for a small pamphlet titled Civil Disobedience, which recommends that – when a US president is taking a wrong turn – good citizens have a duty to protest.

A just society has fair laws. But most societies aren’t like that. So what can you do? The opponent of slavery, Henry David Thoreau, gave one answer in his essay ‘On Civil Disobedience’: follow your conscience and break the law on moral grounds rather than be a cog in an unjust system. Ghandi, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King have all inspired generations to make changes to unjust laws through civil disobedience. Stephen Fry explains its origins.

“In March 1845, the United States acquired a new president – James K. Within a year of his inauguration, he had declared full-scale war on Mexico because of squabbles over the Texan border, and was soon rattling his saber at Britain over the ownership of Oregon. To complete the picture, Polk was a vigorous defender of slavery, who dismissed the arguments of abolitionists as naive and sentimental...”

Lie down, don't move Quiet, you Sick with amazement I'm soaking and broke Here's a big fat aspirin Maybe you'll choke, That's not funny Get me into your club Get me off your hook I want to get excited I want to be your slave Ignorance is happiness unless you get paid And the times never change I'm running out of days But we can always run away And you could always run away with me And we could always run away And you could always run away with me Run away with me Run away I don't like you anymore than you know But I still like you too much This city's insane These people are crazy You can buy me breakfast And then find me a coat Back in that apartment I saw too many ghosts to go home This bread is old My coffee's cold We live on toast and coffee We live on bread and water We live on Coke and pretzels We live on bread and water Times never change I'm running out of days And we can always run away And you can always run away with me And we can always run away And you can always run away with me Run away with me Run away I don't like you anymore than you know
