Book Talk – ‘China’s Russian Princess: The Silent Wife of Chiang Ching-kuo’ by Mark O'Neill
In 'China’s Russian Princess: The Silent Wife of Chiang Ching-kuo', author Mark O’Neill tells the extraordinary and largely unknown story of how a factory worker named Faina Ipat’evna Vakhreva ended up married to the son of Chiang Kai-shek. They first met at a heavy machinery plant in Yekaterinburg in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, when Ching-kuo was effectively a hostage of Josef Stalin. Though Faina expected to spend the rest of her life in the USSR with her husband, O’Neill recounts how the couple moved to China in 1937 and endured World War II and civil war before fleeing to Taiwan in 1949. In this FCC lunchtime talk, the author delves into this surprising and often overlooked chapter of 20th-century history.

Reading Chiang Ching-kuo, the Man Behind Taiwan's Democracy
Chiang Ching-Kuo was the former President of Taiwan, son of Chiang Kai-Shek and the man who largely ushered Taiwan towards democracy
I recently finished reading the book the “Generalissimo’s Son” by Jay Taylor, one of the few full English-language biographies about him. I found it an educational book with many unique stories about the former President as well as Taiwan’s rocky transition throughout the 1980s.
In this video, I bring up a few thoughts I had upon reflecting about the man’s long and eventful life. He had become Chiang Kai-Shek’s sole heir, followed him throughout the reunification of China, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the loss of the Chinese Civil War before eventually taking control of the country on his own upon the death of his father in 1975.

DPP ‘s Tsai seeks to consolidate support, KMT’s Chu visits Chiang Ching-kuo mausoleum
In the last presidential election, DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen lost by 400,000 votes in Taoyuan Hsinchu and Miaoli. With three days to go before the election, she revisited these three areas to consolidate her support. Her KMT opponent, Eric Chu, visited the Touliao Mausoleum, the resting place of former president Chiang Ching-kuo. DPP presidential candidate Tai Ing-wen canvassed for votes in the traditionally pan-blue territory of Miaoli County where she was warmly greeted by supporters. Later, Tsai headed north to Hsinchu and Taoyuan, looking to avoid a repeat of her big loss among Hakka voters in the previous election. Tsai Ing-wenDPP Presidential Candidate This time canvassing votes here is a lot easier than in 2012. We hope to get many more votes in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Mi...

Why did Taiwan develop a fourth-generation indigenous fighter instead of acquiring one from abroad?
Is the F-CK-1 purely indigenous?
Why did Taiwan cease the F-CK-1's production and buy the F-16 and Mirage 2000?
Does the F-CK-1 have combat value against the J-10s and J-20s of the PLAAF?

About a decade later, Chiang Ching-kuo gave up power and converted Taiwan into a democracy. He did not create a dynasty. He did deepen the societal divides in his country. Instead, he brought the Taiwanese majority into the political fold and had them empower his own party. For that it seems like its people - depending on whom you ask - give him either begrudging credit or great admiration.

From 1949 to the 1990s, the Kuomintang ruled the island of Taiwan, first under Chiang Kai-shek and then under his son, Chiang Ching-kuo. The Chiangs and the KMT ruled with an iron fist, which makes their willing embrace of democracy in 1986 all that much more surprising.
This video tells the story of how Taiwan’s dictatorship transitioned to democracy not from a position of weakness but one of strength.

But in matters of the constitutional system, national affairs and reason, he was still wise and far-sighted. He also closely adhered to popular will. This made me deeply confident about the nation’s prospects and very respectful of Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo. A notable absence today was former President Lee Teng-hui, who served as Chiang’s vice president. The park, which is expected to be completed in five years, will become a new Taipei landmark.

Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books, and they tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War is rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.
