Charles Jeremy "Chaz" Jankel (born 16 April 1952) is an English musician best known as the keyboard player and guitarist with Ian Dury and The Blockheads. He was co-writer with Dury of the band's best-known songs during its commercial peak in the late 1970s.
Early life
Jankel was born in Stanmore, England. He started to learn to play the Spanish guitar aged 7 and then the piano. He attended Mill Hill School and became a fan of the American Rock, funk, and soul band Sly & The Family Stone who influenced his own musical style and he was later responsible for much of the funk influence in the Blockheads' music, his fondness for it also being evident in his solo career. As a student at Saint Martin's School of Art he played with a band called Byzantium.
Career
As a member of the group Jonathan Kelly's Outside, Jankel helped record the album ...Waiting on You released in early 1974. First hooking up with Dury as part of the pub group Kilburn and the High-Roads in the early part of the 1970s, Jankel was asked by Dury to join his new outfit, and appeared on such Dury releases as 1977's New Boots and Panties!! and Blockheads releases such as 1979's Do It Yourself, before leaving the group. But in 1981, Jankel teamed up once more with Dury (without the Blockheads), for the release Lord Upminster, which spawned the US Top 40 dance hit "Spasticus Autisticus." But by this time, Jankel had become more interested in pursuing a solo career and he issued several releases for A&M such as 1980s self-titled debut and 1981's Chasanova/Questionnaire (the latter of which contained the US dance hit "Glad to Know You," a collaboration with Dury, plus the MTV video hit of the title track).
Once a small grain trading hub of the region, Chas became notable during the Second World War when the British government used it as a base to supply soldiers fighting in the eastern front against the Japanese. After the decision of Government of India to establish the Bokaro Steel Plant, the economic activity of Chas gathered momentum. It was the administrative headquarters of the area when Bokaro was a part of Dhanbad district, and later when Bokaro became a district itself. Later the headquarters were moved to the Bokaro steel city.
Geography
Chas is located at 23°38′N86°10′E / 23.63°N 86.17°E / 23.63; 86.17. It has an average elevation of 210metres (688feet). It is situated on the junction of National Highway 23 and National Highway 32. Some places of interest include Check Post, Bhootnath Mandir, Joda Mandir, jagadamba mandir, solagidih surya mandir, Success Computer & Cafe- Jodhadih More, Shivpuri Colony, Yadu Bans Nagar Colony.
The corresponding Old Norse form is Karl, the German form is also Karl. The name was notably borne by Charlemagne (Charles the Great), and was at the time Latinized as Karolus (as in Vita Karoli Magni), later also as Carolus.
Etymology
The name's etymology is a Common Germanic noun *karlaz meaning "free man", which survives in English as churl (< Old English ċeorl), which developed its deprecating sense in the Middle English period.
In the form Charles, the initial spelling ch- corresponds to the palatalization of the Latin group ca- to [tʃa] in Central Old French (Francien) and the final -s to the former subjective case (cas sujet) of masculine names in Old French like in Giles or James (< Latin -us, see Spanish/ Portuguese Carlos).
According to Julius Pokorny, the historical linguist and Indo-Europeanist, the root meaning of Karl is "old man", from Indo-European *ĝer-, where the ĝ is a palatal consonant, meaning "to rub; to be old; grain." An old man has been worn away and is now grey with age.

Chaz Jankel - Ai No Corrida
To many people he is largely known as Ian Dury's groovy sidekick in the Blockheads (an ongoing love affair). Jankel trod manfully into Dury's life during the collapse of Ian & The Kilburns and was at the Ian Dury & The Blockheads, acting as the mercurial Londoner's sidekick, songwriting partner and musical director. If Dury brought the rock and the roll to their music, then Jankel delivered the jazz and soul.
But there is another side to Jankel: that of songwriter and solo performer and thanks to cult club hits like 3,000,000 Synths and Glad To Know You underground dance hero. Chaz Jankel ~ Glad To Know You 1982 Funky Purrfection Version
Charles Jeremy Jankel was born April 16, 1952 in Middlsex. He took up the guitar at the age of 7 and then moved on to learn the piano. Soon the radio caught his ear and the funky music of Sly & The Family Stone became one of his influences.
In 1973 he contributed a track to Long John Baldry's "Good To Be Alive" LP, then he joined a folk rock band named Jonathon Kelly's Outside and recorded an album with them in 1974. He moved on to work with the new wave band Ian Dury & The Blockheads where he ended up writing the majority of the songs on their 1977 LP "New Boots & Panties" and 1979's LP "Do It Yourself", and the singles "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" and "Reasons To Be Cheerful" and then leaving the band shortly thereafter.
He rejoined forces with the now solo Ian Dury in 1981 and co ...

To many people he is largely known as Ian Dury's groovy sidekick in the Blockheads (an ongoing love affair). If Dury brought the rock and the roll to their music, then Jankel delivered the jazz and soul.
But there is another side to Jankel: that of songwriter and solo performer and thanks to cult club hits like 3,000,000 Synths and Glad To Know You underground dance hero. Working alongside studio wiz, Phlip Bagenal, who not only engineered many of his best works, and with whom he also founded Eastcote Studios, Jankel was responsible for some of best and most experimental dance records to come from these shores. Predictably, Jankel's work received much less attention than it deserved in the UK mainly because he was white and from London at a time when most dance music fans regarded anything that wasn't black and from a Bronx ghetto as somehow inferior.
Perversely, it was largely the championing of his work by African-American DJs in New York and Chicago in the 1980s that led to the re-evaluation of Jankel's work in Britain and the subsequent release of this excellent compilation.
Jankel's first solo collaboration was with veteran songwriter Kenny Young (who co-wrote Under The Boardwalk) whose lyrics had been inspired by a recent and controversial Japanese movie called Ai No Corrida. It eventually ended up in the hands of Quincy Jones, and it was enough to win a deal with A&M, which eventually yielded five albums (and, bizarrely, no hits). ). "I loved Ian dearly but he was very demanding and intense. I needed time to express my other musical ideas, which weren't so English; music that was more Latin and jazzed out."
Whatever Jankel's music lacked in commercial sales it certainly made up for in underground kudos. Glad To Know You, co-written with Ian Dury (and later covered by Kitty Grant), was a huge club hit in the USA, spending 6 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. One of his final efforts as a major label artist was You're My Occupation, featuring Brenda Jones on vocals, the best song on his fifth (and unreleased) album, finally getting a proper release after over 20 years.
It was often on the 12-inch releases where Jankel could really let loose and have some fun (not least with some of the wacky song titles) and from where many of the tracks for this compilation are drawn. Rêve de Chèvre (Goat Dream) is a dubbed out version of Questionnaire, shorn of its melodic content, driven by a skeletal rhythm and plaintive piano figures, while the brilliant 3,000,000 Synths is an experiment in the unnecessary overuse of the Oberheim. To Woo Lady Kong is a jazzy reggae reading of Glad To Know You, with Chas's raucous organ added as a knowing lick on the fade out.
There is also a new song included on the set, Get Myself Together, which he only completed a matter of months ago. "That was totally recorded in my studio at home," enthuses Chas. "I was quite excited after I recorded it. It was interesting hearing it back to back with the older recordings because it really fits. It was inspired by working with Yam Who and Toni Rossano and people like that, who live in clubs and that's rubbed off on me."
Although most of the songs included here were recorded over 20 years ago it sounds strangely fresh as though the wheels of fashion have circled once more towards what we might call Chasworld. This is partially to do with how criminally underplayed and undervalued his solo work is but it also reflects the influences of a lot of the dance scene's young bucks. "There are a lot of acts out there now, guys like Mark Ronson and Groove Armada, who are essentially club acts performing with live bands and I suppose that's what I was doing all those years ago," he offers by way of explanation. "It's club-funk with a rock edge and that's where I was coming from, too." It is, we'd have to say, where he is still coming from a few decades and many grey hairs later.
Here we present Chas Jankel's major label career, spanning five albums, many 12-inch singles, some crazed studio experiments, a few laughs and several very good songs along the way. Glad to know you? You betcha.

He rejoined forces with the now solo Ian Dury in 1981 and co wrote Ian's dance/disco hit "Spasticus Autisticus" that peaked at #32. Chaz had signed with A&M Records in 1980, writing and recording his version of "Ai No Corrida" that became a #3 disco hit for Quincy Jones cover version. Jankel's follow up album, 1981's "Chasanova" in the UK and "Questionnaire" in the US contained a funky dance tune called "Glad To Meet You" that peaked at #1 on the disco chart for seven weeks that ended its lengthy run in 1982.
In 1985 he was dropped from A&M who refused to release his fifth album. He moved to the US in 1988, then returned to the UK to rejoin The Blockheads and work with Ian Dury on their final two LP's. After Dury passed away in 2000 he continued writing and recording new music with the Blockheads with whom he still gigs with today.
Jankel composed the soundtrack to the 1988 movie DOA with Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan.

You betcha.
