Mann attended and played college football at the University of Nevada, where he played defensive end from 1979 to 1982. During his senior season, he led the Big Sky Conference with 14 sacks and was named the conference's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman.
Professional career
Mann was drafted in the third round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins and by his second season, he was the starting left defensive end, opposite to Dexter Manley. During this time, Mann had double-digit sack seasons four times, including a career-high 14.5 in 1985, which was just his third season in the NFL.
Footballers generally begin as amateurs and the best players progress to become professional players. Normally they start at a youth team (any local team) and from there, based on skill and talent, scouts offer contracts. Once signed, some learn to play better football and some advance to the senior or professional teams.
Mann was born in Syleham, East Suffolk, England, son of Charles Mann and his wife Sarah, née Moxon. Mann was admitted a solicitor in the King's Bench Division and set up practice in Cannon Street, London.
At Captain (Sir) John Hindmarsh's request, Mann was appointed the first South Australian advocate-general, this included a position on the South Australian Legislative Council . Mann sailed in the Coromandel, arriving at Holdfast Bay on 12 January 1837.
Mann was a partner with Edward Castres Gwynne for a time, and became master of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1844, and acting judge in 1849. Mann was appointed crown solicitor in 1850, police magistrate and insolvency commissioner in 1856, and commissioner of the Court of Insolvency and stipendiary magistrate in 1858. He died at his home in Gilbert Street, Adelaide, on 24 May 1860.
Mann was born in Adelaide, the son of Charles Mann, a prominent lawyer, and educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide. Having been articled to the firm of Messrs. Bagot & Labatt, he was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1860, and went into partnership with H. W. Parker (died 15 March 1874), a successful lawyer whose previous partner was R. D. Hanson. Mann was made Queen's Counsel in 1875. He was involved in many of the high-profile legal cases of the period; one of his last was acting as advisor to the liquidators of the failed Commercial Bank of South Australia and proceedings against its Directors.
Political career
Mann was elected to the South Australian House of Assembly as member for Burra on 14 April 1870. Mann was four times Attorney-General of South Australia — from 21 July 1871 to 22 January 1872 (in the last John Hart government until 10 November 1871, afterwards in the Arthur Blyth Ministry which immediately followed it); in the third Blyth Ministry, from 22 July 1873 to 3 June 1875; in the second and third James Boucaut governments, from 25 March to 6 June 1876 and 26 October 1877 to 27 September 1878. From 12 February 1875 to 26 April 1881 Mann represented Stanley.

Success is being able to wake up in the morning, being able to look in the mirror and say, I like who I see. I like what I'm doing in my community. I like what I'm doing in my own family. I like the effort that I'm making in my place of employment. To me, success is an emotion, is a feeling. It's not necessarily a doing.
There was a progression in my life. There were events that helped shape me. The death of my father when I was 20 years old, that really impacted me. I often tell people that my father's death brought me new life. It made me think about life. It made me respect life. It made me realize that he died at 44 years old, and I was 20. Does that mean I only have 24 years left? So I started to take into account what time I had and made sure I maximized it.
I have this analogy that I think about all the time. And it's about aiming high. An archer trying to hit a mark 50 yards out, they have to aim higher than the mark is, because gravity is going to pull things down. So I started aiming higher. And, if you aim higher, you're more likely to hit the mark.
