Charles Hawtrey - A Flamboyantly Wasted Life
Please join me in this video, Charles Hawtrey - A Flamboyantly Wasted Life.
Many fans of the Carry-On films consider Charles Hawtrey to be one of the outstanding members of the cast, this curious little man in goggle glasses with a thin quirky look – often receiving third billing, with only Sid James and Kenneth Williams in front of him – but was it enough for Charles?
In this video we will explore Charles Hawtrey’s beginnings as a child star of the silent era, a performer in Revue, and a regular in the popular Will Hay films but what really happened to this extraordinary actor – how did he go from working closely with Vivien Leigh the wife of Sir Laurence Olivier - to becoming a belligerent recluse in Deal on the Kent coast, where his jolly high camp flamboyant personality gave way to ...

Charlie was clearly the worse for wear in this very rare interview from around 1984, which has been heavily edited by the broadcaster due to the Carry On star's drunken behaviour.

Charles Hawtrey House Fire
Charles Hawtrey after his house was set on fire in August 1984.
According to Wes Butters biography the house was set on fire by a 16 year old rent boy when Hawtrey refused to pay him.
At the time of the fire Hawtrey had been an alcoholic for many years and evidently was not a nice bloke, if he ever was.
Nonetheless he was excellent in the Carry On films and I think a distinction should be made between someone's talent and character.

Charles Hawtrey - A Carry On Journey - a personal look at Charlie's films.
I hope you enjoy my first longer form documentary style video. I've been wanting to make this for a while. If you’ve seen any of my videos here, you'd have noticed that I’ve been playing around with the Carry on films.
While I was editing these films, looking for clips, and watching cuts again and again, I really started to see what each actor brought to the series, appreciating of their comic skill, timing, and their unique contribution to the ensemble cast.
A particular stand out for me was Charles Hawtrey.
This video isn’t about Charlie’s life, we know he was a complicated, and somewhat tragic figure.
This video is about Charlie’s Carry On journey.

Growing up, Hawtrey felt disconnected from his working-class family and harbored mysteries about his origins that continued haunting him. Seeking legitimacy and purpose, he reinvented his name and lineage entirely. But try as he might to escape his past, it continued casting a shadow. As he forged an illustrious career in film and theater alongside greats like Vivien Leigh and Will Hay, deeper forces threatened to curtail Hawtrey's success.
No matter his exemplary talents, an industry fixated on surface attributes pigeonholed Hawtrey into repetitive, superficial roles long after outgrowing them. Explore how repetitive typecasting took both a professional and emotional toll. Despite immense popular acclaim, Hawtrey's personal life was defined by loneliness as a gay man in an intolerant time. Devastated by losing his sole source of love, isolation and hardships soon prevailed.
Through intimate storytelling, witness first-hand how one man navigated immense creative challenges and societal pressures far before widespread liberation. Discover Hawtrey's solitary later years living on the margins of a town that scorned his authenticity. But through it all, Hawtrey stayed devoted to entertaining audiences until the very end through adversity-defining resilience.
This video honors one artist's inspiring journey from disguising his history to finding resolution through familiar characters beloved by generations. Immerse yourself in Charles Hawtrey's moving untold story and gain a newfound appreciation for the struggles often invisible beneath public smiles. It is a tribute to staying courageously true to oneself, whatever barriers may come.

Did you know that one of the former cast members of the Carry On films took their own life and that only one is still alive? The Carry On films are a staple of British comedy, famous around the world for their irreverent humor, double entendres, and quirky characters. Spanning over thirty years, these films spawned a loyal fan base, a string of spin-offs, and an enduring legacy in the world of comedy. But what about the cast of the Carry On films? Where are they now, and what are they doing? In this video, we’ll be taking a look at whether or not any of the former cast members from the Carry On films are still around.

Some of the most well-known Carry On cast members included Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, and Barbara Windsor. Williams was a classically trained actor who brought a touch of sophistication to many of his Carry On roles, while James was a master of the innuendo and often played a lecherous but lovable character. Hawtrey was known for his high-pitched voice and campy mannerisms, while Sims was a versatile performer who could play everything from a love interest to a battle-axe. Finally, Windsor, who joined the cast in the 1960s, was beloved for her bubbly personality, curvy figure, and infectious laugh.
Sadly, many of the Carry On cast members have passed away over the years. Williams died in 1988, while James (who made more appearances in the series than any other actor) died in 1976. Hawtrey died in 1988 as well, and Sims passed away in 2001. Windsor, however, lived a full life and continued acting well into her seventies. She died in 2020 at the age of 83. Even though some of the Carry On actors are no longer with us, their legacy lives on through these beloved films. Today, the Carry On movies are still widely watched and celebrated for their wit, charm, and hilarity. Although most of the Carry On cast members are gone, there is one that is still around. The last surviving cast member of the Carry On films is Jim Dale. Join Facts Verse as we see if any of the cast members from the Carry On films are still around.

2. Built the voice model in RVC (used Collab this time).
3. Found a short version of RocketMan this one was from Family Guy.

5. Recorded my very best impression of Charles Hawtrey ‘singing’ Rocketman.
6. Ran that through RVC using the Charles Hawtrey Model.
7. Did a bit of tweaking.
8. Mixed and layered the tracks in Audition.
9. Grabbed some stills of Charles Hawtrey from some Carry On films.
10. Used Photoshop AI to make them a bit sci-fi-y.
11. Found a nice 1970s NASA Documentary “The Universe” to use.
11. Edited everything in Premiere.
12. Had a beer.
