Charles Samuel Flanagan Carroll, MC, OBE, (30 January 1923 - 1992) was a British soldier of the Brigade of Gurkhas who led a bayonet charge of a Japanese position during the Second World War and fought communist insurgents in the jungle during the Malayan Emergency.
Early life
Charles Samuel Flanagan Carroll was born in Calcutta on 30 January 1923. He was educated at Ghora Galli School.
Military career
Carroll was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1942 and served first, as was customary, in a British regiment, the Worcesters. He then joined the 4th Battalion of the 6th Gurkhas and went to Burma in 1944 as commander of C company. In 1945 he won a Military Cross in Burma when he led a bayonet charge at Mindegon, near Mandalay. After the end of the Second World War, he became adjutant of the 1st Gurkha Battalion. He then went to Malaya to fight communist insurgents in the jungle and was mentioned in dispatches. He had various staff appointments, was awarded an OBE in 1966, and lastly commanded the Aldershot Garrison before his retirement from the army in 1978.
Charles Carroll (March 22, 1723 – March 23, 1783) was an American lawyer and statesman from Annapolis, Maryland. He was the builder of the Baltimore Colonial home Mount Clare (1760), and a delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1776 and 1777.
Early life
A descendant of the last Gaelic Lords of Éile in Ireland, Charles Carroll was born in Annapolis, Maryland of a distinguished Roman Catholic family and was a distant cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, (1737–1832), and Daniel Carroll (the First and Second), (1730–1796). His father, also Charles Carroll, took him to Europe in 1733 for his education. Young Charles spent six years at the English House school in Lisbon, Portugal. He then went to England to complete his education at Eton and Cambridge. After graduating Cambridge in 1746, Charles returned to Annapolis. He took up residence there. He busied himself learning to manage the family's farm and mills at Carrollton.
In 1751 Charles decided on a more specific career. He journeyed to London, took up residence at the Middle Temple, and studied law. He was admitted to the bar at the Inns of Court there before returning to Maryland early in 1755. Since there were now three other relatives named Charles active in public affairs in the area, he began to call himself Charles Carroll, Barrister. Three months later his father died, leaving Charles, at 32, one of the wealthiest men in Maryland. He was elected to his father's seat for Anne Arundel County in the Maryland Assembly, legislature in Annapolis for the colony.
Charles Carroll Glover (November 24, 1846 - February 25, 1936) was a banker and philanthropist who made major contributions to the modern landscape of Washington DC in the late 19th and early 20th Century. He was President of Riggs Bank, an effective advocate of urban beautification in Washington under the influence of the City Beautiful movement, and a generous donor of land and money for Washington's parks and monuments.
Glover was born in Macon County, North Carolina, the son of Charles Glover and Caroline Piercy Glover. He moved to Washington at age eight to live there with his grandmother. He started working at Riggs Bank in 1866, rising to Partner in 1873, and was its effective leader in 1881 at the time of the death of George Washington Riggs. In 1896, the bank was converted into a national bank and he became its President. In the early 1900s he oversaw the construction of the new Riggs National Bank headquarters facing the US Treasury Building. He retired from the bank in 1921.
