Champagne (French pronunciation:[ʃɑ̃paɲ]) is a historic province in the northeast of France, now best known as the Champagne wine region for the sparkling white wine that bears its name. It was founded in 1065 near the city of Provins and was made up of different counties that came from the former kingdom of Austrasia.
The name Champagne comes from the Latincampania and referred to the similarities between the rolling hills of the province and the Italian countryside of Campania located south of Rome.
Champagne is only true champagne if it's made in the Champagne region of northern France. All other sparkling wines made outside of this region, even those from neighboring parts of France, must be labeled differently. Champagne often costs double the price of other sparkling wines, such as prosecco or cava. A decent-quality bottle of it can cost you anywhere from $50 to $300, and vintage bottles often sell for thousands.

Video Content (transcription):
This is Julien, the French winemaking guy who makes wine videos here on YouTube. yes, wine videos! We are looking at how to pronounce the name of THE most famous of all sparkling wines in the world. We are looking at how to pronounce the name: Champagne, the French Champagne wine. So, as far as pronunciation goes, there is going to be only two ways to say Champagne: 1) the American or British-sounding pronunciation which are pretty much the same, the one you probably already know and 2) there is going to be the typical french way, the way French people say Champagne. So the American or English pronunciation is, as you know: CHAMPAIN. SHAM PAIN. In French, people in France, in Paris and elsewhere in the country would say ChAMPAGNE. CHAM PA GNEH. I made a video about why you should stop saying CHAMPAIN, so you don't have to say PAIN in the word CHAMPAGNE, and pronounce it the other way, the French way perhaps: Champagne. Champagne. It's just a suggestion but I think it's worth considering. Have a look at that very video, it's a fun video, a bit of a joke around why you should say Champagne rather than Champain. I hope these videos are useful, and I'll see you soon in the wonderful world of wine, in the wonderful world of vino. Au revoir! Bye bye...
Learn how to say wine words in English, French, Spanish, German Italian, and many other languages with Julien Miquel and his pronunciation tutorials! In the world of wine words and the diversity of accents and local dialects, some words can be extremely hard to pronounce.
Julien’s instructional and educational videos make pronunciation easier as I detail the correct pronunciation as native French speaker but also fluent speaker of French, English, Spanish and Italian.
