The North American Great Lakes — Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior — are so big that they border 8 states and contain 23 quadrillion liters of water. They span forest, grassland, and wetland habitats, supporting a region that’s home to 3,500 species. But how did such a vast and unique geological feature come to be? Cheri Dobbs and Jennifer Gabrys takes us all the way back to the Ice Age to find out.

Great Lakes Sailing - Welland Canal HD time-lapse
The Welland Canal is a ship canal in Canada that runs 42 km (27.0 miles) from Port Colborne, Ontario on Lake Erie to Port Weller, Ontario on Lake Ontario. As part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the canal allows ships to traverse the Niagara Escarpment and avoid Niagara Falls.
FOR THE SPRINKLERS QUESTION HERE IS YOUR ANSWER:
"Hogging is a term used when a vessel is bent up in the middle due to any number of factors. On the Great Lakes this happens to vessels in hot weather where the upper part is heated more than the submerged part. That's why you see boats with sprinkler systems spraying cool water over the decks to reduce this hogging.
FOR THE YELLOW BOOM THAT LOWER IN THE FRONT OF THE SHIP HERE IS YOUR ANSWER (COPY FROM COMMENT):

Lyrics:
We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes
Are the largest body of fresh water on Earth to date
We’re the Great Lakes
There are only five of us to celebrate
The Great Lakes
come to visit all of us so you can appreciate
Hello I’m Lake Superior
It’s great to know you
I am the largest of the Great Lakes of North America this is true
Canadian Province, Ontario
Touches my north shores
And the US State
of Minnesota’s in my West of course
To the South, I touch Wisconsin
and Michigan you can see
And roughly 3 Quadrillion Gallons of water
I hold in me
I’m the largest freshwater lake by, surface area known
With 31,700 Square Miles
to swim and roam
I’m Lake Michigan
a North American lake I be
And the only one of the great lakes
in the US completely
I touch the states of Wisconsin, Illinois,
Michigan and Indiana
And I’m the 5th Largest Lake in the world
By Surface Area
The word Michigan’s derived from the Ojibwa Indian word Mishigami
It means “Great Lake”
And that’s why they gave the name to me
We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes
Are the largest body of fresh water on Earth to date
We’re the Great Lakes
There are only five of us to celebrate
The Great Lakes
come to visit all of us so you can appreciate
Lake Huron here the second largest of the Great Lakes by surface area
23,000 Square Miles of fresh water
I’d like to share with ya
I touch Ontario to the North and East and
Michigan through the South and west
Lake Michigan’s connected to me by Straits of Mackinac I attest
I am Lake Ontario
The Far East of all the Great Lakes
And I am the smallest lake
of the Great Lakes to date
I’m surrounded on the North and West and Southwest by Ontario
And on the south and east by the American state of New York Now you know
I’m Lake Erie the fourth largest of the Great Lakes in North America
The 13th Largest Freshwater Lake In The World By Surface Area
I touch New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan in the US
In the North, I touch the Ontario of Canada now go pass your test
We’re created by Glaciers Advancing and Retreating over thousands of years
The Glaciers Melted Filling Freshwater where erosion had appeared
We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes

It's a safety check to prevent damage to the lock gates by making sure no part of the bow extends over the gates which could cause damage to the gates when the ship is lowered. In the down position, the sensor cable on the yellow gate is slightly below the top of the gates. If it touches anything in it's travel then some part of the bow is too far forward and the ship will have to reverse slightly .

North America's Forgotten Great Lakes
North America has a lot of lakes that are pretty great, including the Great Salt lake, the Great Slave Lake, and the Great Bear Lake. But North America’s greatest lakes are the North American Great Lakes, often just called the Great Lakes if you’re confident you won’t confuse them with the African Great Lakes. The Great Lakes with the greatest area are Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. But these aren’t the only significant lakes in the Great Lakes watershed, the area of land that drains into the major Great Lakes, and those additional lakes are also pretty great. Let’s Explore!

We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes
Are the largest body of fresh water on Earth to date
We’re the Great Lakes
There are only five of us to celebrate
The Great Lakes
come to visit all of us so you can appreciate
Hello I’m Lake Superior
It’s great to know you
I am the largest of the Great Lakes of North America this is true
Canadian Province, Ontario
Touches my north shores
And the US State
of Minnesota’s in my West of course
To the South, I touch Wisconsin
and Michigan you can see
And roughly 3 Quadrillion Gallons of water
I hold in me
I’m the largest freshwater lake by, surface area known
With 31,700 Square Miles
to swim and roam
I’m Lake Michigan
a North American lake I be
And the only one of the great lakes
in the US completely
I touch the states of Wisconsin, Illinois,
Michigan and Indiana
And I’m the 5th Largest Lake in the world
By Surface Area
The word Michigan’s derived from the Ojibwa Indian word Mishigami
It means “Great Lake”
And that’s why they gave the name to me
We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes
Are the largest body of fresh water on Earth to date
We’re the Great Lakes
There are only five of us to celebrate
The Great Lakes
come to visit all of us so you can appreciate
Lake Huron here the second largest of the Great Lakes by surface area
23,000 Square Miles of fresh water
I’d like to share with ya
I touch Ontario to the North and East and
Michigan through the South and west
Lake Michigan’s connected to me by Straits of Mackinac I attest
I am Lake Ontario
The Far East of all the Great Lakes
And I am the smallest lake
of the Great Lakes to date
I’m surrounded on the North and West and Southwest by Ontario
And on the south and east by the American state of New York Now you know
I’m Lake Erie the fourth largest of the Great Lakes in North America
The 13th Largest Freshwater Lake In The World By Surface Area
I touch New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan in the US
In the North, I touch the Ontario of Canada now go pass your test
We’re created by Glaciers Advancing and Retreating over thousands of years
The Glaciers Melted Filling Freshwater where erosion had appeared
We’re the Great Lakes

2:51 Lake Simcoe
4:04 Lake Nipissing

5:32 Lake Michigan-Huron

CORRECTIONS:
Nipigon is pronounced more like "Nipigin" or "Nipigen" (/ˈnɪpɪɡən/ for all you IPA fans)
"Portage" rhymes with "frontage", not "massage" (although some Canadians have mentioned they pronounce it the way I do in the video)
The lake next to Lake Nipissing is "Trout Lake", not "Lake Trout" which is a type of fish
The RV manufacturer Winnebago Industries is named after Winnebago County, Iowa, not Lake Winnebago. Both names are related to the term "Winnebago" used to refer to the Ho-Chunk tribe.
The map showing Northern vs Southern Ontario isn't completely accurate, as some districts south of the French River are considered part of Northern Ontario as well.

But these aren’t the only significant lakes in the Great Lakes watershed, the area of land that drains into the major Great Lakes, and those additional lakes are also pretty great. Let’s Explore!
Check out more "great" lakes at the second video here: https://youtu.be/du9SrHYmTHE
Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:36 Lake St. Clair
1:18 Lake Nipigon
2:00 Lake Winnebago
2:51 Lake Simcoe
4:04 Lake Nipissing
4:57 Lake Champlain
5:32 Lake Michigan-Huron
6:30 Lake Algonquin
7:40 Conclusion

Sure, North America's Great Lakes are famous, but are these lesser-known lakes just as great? Come learn about the continent's largest lakes outside the Great Lakes system - including a few larger than some of the Great Lakes themselves! We'll discuss how these lakes formed, their "deranged" hydrology, and their significance to the continent today. Let's Explore!
Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:34 Criteria
1:15 How did these lakes get here?
2:00 Lake Winnipeg Basin
4:51 Lakes of northern Saskatchewan
6:07 Great Slave Lake
7:15 Great Bear Lake
7:51 Rounding out Canada
9:14 Non-Canadian Lakes
9:55 Conclusion
Note [thanks to David Danos in the comments]: The "Great Slave Lake" has a name that the local Dene nations abhor. There are big efforts to change the name away from 'slave'-related exonyms. The Deh Cho Dene nation is just one of the four nations in whose territories this lake is found. The others are the Tłı̨chǫ, Tetsǫ́t’ıné, and Dëne Sųłıné.
CORRECTIONS:
Since
Alaska is part of the continent of North America, it's more accurate to say the Northwest Angle is the only part of the 48 contiguous states above the 49th parallel north.
