From German Princess to Russian Empress: Catherine The Great
Catherine the Great was Empress of Russia from 1762 - 1796. The special thing about Catherine is that she actually first was Empress Consort of Russia. But Catherine wanted more: She overthrew her own husband, Peter III, to become Empress in her own right. But who was Catherine and why is she known to history as "The Great"?

When Life Gives You Lemons | The Life & Times of Maria Theresa (ft. M.Laser!)
Back again to a country that used be a great power once too, guys! Though looking at Austria now you wouldn't know it. But how Austria fell apart is another story, today we're looking at the time Austria almost fell apart but didn't thanks to Maria Theresa (along with, y'know, her generals and administration and stuff). We've got a World War before World Wars were cool, we've got Cold War-esque meddling in other countries' affairs before that was cool, we've got Carolus Rex who's always been cool, so come on down! Oh yeah and we've got Frederick the Great making Maria's life complicated. A lot of that, actually.
And for those of you who are studying for AP Euro, that means we've got the War of Polish Succession, the Pragmatic Sanction, the War of Austrian Succession, the Diplomatic Revolu...

The Story Of The Last Tsarinas
From Catherine the Great (1729 – 1796) up until the last Russian Empress all the ‘Russian’ Tsarinas were, in fact, German. This was not because the path of true love led them straight to Petrograd, but the result of European power play at the highest level. Splendour and Misery of the Last Tsarinas, starting with Princess Charlotte (1798 – 1860), tells the dramatic stories of these young women – torn between strategic marriages, the longing for true love and the shackles of European power politics.

And for those of you who are studying for AP Euro, that means we've got the War of Polish Succession, the Pragmatic Sanction, the War of Austrian Succession, the Diplomatic Revolution, and the big bad Seven Years War. God I love it when a video is actually relevant for once.
Feature History's video on the Seven Years War: https://youtu.be/U5OvHaQgKXM
Footnotes:
1:04 Yes I know it's the East India Company, let me have my fun
1:09 This is a frame stolen from a short film I worked on and am therefore obligated to promote, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXU8E9Jt8yo I still think the YouTube-added contrast looks weird, maybe you can change my co-director's mind. But man this shot looks good.
1:12 Charles VI did get one son, but he died at the ripe old age of seven months, so there's some more Alternate History fuel to add to this video, as if there wasn't enough already.
4:05 Kids complain about it being mandatory, that is. Not trying to pass judgement on public education in formerly Habsburg lands
5:12 The battle of Karansebes. Google it, it's hilarious
5:20 There are still Habsburg-Lorraines around, though, Europe couldn't get rid of them that easily.

Enjoying the Netflix romantic drama "The Empress"? Check out the real story of Empress Elisabeth "Sisi" of Austria.
Elisabeth of Austria was a shy woman who’s beauty won the heart of Emperor Franz Joseph. She suffered under heavy expectations and a frankly evil mother in law. She was forced into a limelight she never wanted and into the path of an assassin.
This video is part of my 20 episode series profiling the most fascinating Queens of Europe.
