India’s caste system: what you need to know
Despite being abolished on paper, India’s caste system is alive and functioning even today. The system still determines who believers of Hinduism can marry, the jobs they can work in and the social customs that govern their lives. USC Annenberg’s Tannistha Sinha breaks it down. She explains how the people outside the rubric of the caste system, the Dalits (once called "untouchables") are punished by the centuries-old system. Dalits do the most life-threatening and undesirable work in the country and face violence at extreme rates. Learn about the status quo in India, and what work is being done to disrupt the injustice meted out to the community.

Has India’s caste system migrated to the US? - BBC News
Seattle has become the first city in the US to ban discrimination on the basis of caste.
The city has a large South Asian population, many working in the technology sector.
In the future, caste will be identified in its own class, alongside race, religion and gender identity.
The caste system in India dates back over 3,000 years and divides Hindu society into rigid hierarchical groups.
This can lead to discrimination and violence against those considered to be in the lowest classes – particularly the Dalit, or 'untouchables'.
Kshama Sawant, the Seattle city councillor behind the legislation, and Pulitzer prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson, join Christian Fraser and his panel to put the new law into context.

Isabel Wilkerson’s new book, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” examines America’s history of segregation and racism as a caste system, created through an artificial ranking of human value. Wilkerson says, “Only when [Europeans came] to the United States to create this new country, there became the impulse to rank and to divide – it could have been any number of physical characteristics but it turned out to be race as the measure of value and the hierarchy that was created here in this country.”. What the Nazis Learned from Jim Crow: Author Isabel Wilkerson on the U.S. Racial Caste System
In her extensively researched new book, "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents," Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson argues the United States' racial hierarchy should be thought of as a caste system, similar to that in India. In a wide-ranging interview, she describes how she also looks at the ways Nazi Germany borrowed from U.S. Jim Crow laws. "The Nazis needed no one to teach them how to hate," Wilkerson says. "But what they did was they sent researchers to the United States to study Jim Crow laws here in the United States, to study and to research how the United States had managed to subordinate and subjugate its African American population."
