Terra Nova: The White Silence | Captain Scott’s Journey to the South Pole, Antarctica
A thorough telling of the events of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). This was an Antarctic venture led by famed explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, whose main objective, aside from the many scientific research goals, was to reach the geographic South Pole and claim it for the United Kingdom.
It is a well-known tale of struggle and survival, but too many people focus solely on Scott's part in the expedition, and exclude the adventures of the many other men who accompanied him in Antarctica. This documentary aims to address Scott and his companions thoroughly, who were a band of interesting and colorful characters. Many were brave and honorable, and a few were arguably negligent.

THE RACE TO THE SOUTH POLE Amundsen Scott Full Documentary
The Race to the South Pole full documentary on Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott south pole deadly expedition. Between December 1911 and January 1912, both Roald Amundsen (leading his South Pole expedition) and Robert Falcon Scott (leading the Terra Nova Expedition) reached the South Pole within five weeks of each other. But while Scott and his four companions died on the return journey, Amundsen's party managed to reach the geographic south pole first and subsequently return to their base camp at Framheim without loss of human life, suggesting that they were better prepared for the expedition. The contrasting fates of the two teams seeking the same prize at the same time invites comparison.

Captain Scott's Discovery Hut at McMurdo
The Discovery Hut in Antarctica was built for Scott's first expedtion in 1901. From there, along with Shackleton and Wilson hemade his first, unsuccessful, attempt at the South Pole. Over the following years other expeditions used the hut, such as some of the Ross Sea party of Shackleton's failed attempt to cross Antarctica.
I had the fortune to be shown around the hut by Lizzie Meek, of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, who help conserve the this and other heroic era huts in the McMurdo area.

He had no idea how much the Norwegians would interfere with his plans.
In this episode of ‘How It Was,’ we'll tell you about one of the most dramatic confrontations in the history of geographical discoveries - the rivalry between the British and Norwegians for the title of the first conquerors of the South Pole. Who coped better with the task: strong and hardy Norwegians, dressed in animal furs, or British scientists, equipped with the latest science supplies? What mistakes can cost lives in Antarctica, and how can a literary gift turn defeat into victory? These are the topics explored in our new video.

The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911,[n 1] five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base, and later learned that Scott and his four companions had died on their return journey.
Amundsen's initial plans had focused on the Arctic and the conquest of the North Pole by means of an extended drift in an icebound ship. He obtained the use of Fridtjof Nansen's polar exploration ship Fram, and undertook extensive fundraising. Preparations for this expedition were disrupted when, in 1909, the rival American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claimed to have reached the North Pole. Amundsen then changed his plan and began to prepare for a conquest of the South Pole; uncertain of the extent to which the public and his backers would support him, he kept this revised objective secret. When he set out in June 1910, he led even his crew to believe they were embarking on an Arctic drift, and revealed their true Antarctic destination only when Fram was leaving their last port of call, Madeira.
Amundsen made his Antarctic base, which he named "Framheim", in the Bay of Whales on the Great Ice Barrier. After months of preparation, depot-laying and a false start that ended in near-disaster, he and his party set out for the pole in October 1911. In the course of their journey they discovered the Axel Heiberg Glacier, which provided their route to the polar plateau and ultimately to the South Pole. The party's mastery of the use of skis and their expertise with sledge dogs ensured rapid and relatively trouble-free travel. Other achievements of the expedition included the first exploration of King Edward VII Land and an extensive oceanographic cruise.
The expedition's success was widely applauded, though the story of Scott's heroic failure overshadowed its achievement in the United Kingdom. Amundsen's decision to keep his true plans secret until the last moment was criticised by some. Recent polar historians have more fully recognised the skill and courage of Amundsen's party; the permanent scientific base at the pole bears his name, together with that of Scott.

Robert Falcon Scott was a British explorer who dreamed of being the first person to reach the South Pole. In 1912, he reached the Pole only to learn that his Norwegian rival, Roald Amundsen, had beat him to it. Caught by freakish weather and a string of bad luck, his entire party died trying to get back. Reasons for his failure range from his use of ponies rather than dogs to a highly unusual temperature drop that made the journey back impossible to survive.
