North Carolina is composed of 100 counties. Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte. In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.
North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.
North Carolina wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Wine has been produced in the area since the early days of Europeancolonization in the 17th century. Wine growers in North Carolina were the first to cultivate a native American grape variety, the Scuppernong, which produces a sweet wine, examples of which are still being made in the state. Most wine produced in North Carolina since the year 2000 is made from Vitis vinifera grape varieties, although French hybrid and Vitis labrusca varieties remain common.
Wine industry
North Carolina ranks tenth in both grape and wine production in the United States. The state's wine industry continues to expand, and today is one of the United States’ five most visited state destinations for wine and culinary tourism. In 2007, North Carolina contained 55 wineries and 350 vineyards. By 2011, this had grown to more than 100 wineries and more than 400 vineyards.
Cape Lookout is part of Carteret County and is located 11 miles southeast of Beaufort, NC. Cape Lookout is one of North Carolina's three major capes; the other two are Cape Hatteras to the north and Cape Fear to the south.
The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is located on the cape, approximately three miles northeast of the point of the cape.
Hurricane Irene made landfall near the cape on Saturday, August 27, 2011 as a Category 1 storm with a very low pressure of 950 mbar.
Cape Lookout is a sharp rocky promontory along the Pacific Ocean coast of northwestern Oregon in the United States. It is located in southwestern Tillamook County, approximately 10mi (16km) southwest of Tillamook, just south of Netarts Bay. The promontory extends 1mi (1.6km) perpendicular to the coast, and is approximately 0.25mi (0.5km) wide at its base, tapering as it extends outward from the coast. Cape Lookout State Park is located on the north side of the promontory, which is part of the Siuslaw National Forest.
The Cape Lookout Trail is a popular hiking trail, extending 2.5 miles through Sitka spruce forest to the tip of the promontory. The cliff-top viewpoint offers views of Cape Kiwanda and Cascade Head to the south, and Cape Meares and Neahkahnie Mountain to the north. Migrating whales can also be seen, generally from December through June.
During World War II, the cape was the location of a notable crash of a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. There was one survivor (the bombardier), Wilbur L. Perez. A plaque on the cape memorializes the victims of the crash.

Giant tun found at Cape Lookout along NC Outer Banks
Some beachgoers along the North Carolina coast came across an unusual find: a giant tun. Giant tuns are large sea mollusks found in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Cape Lookout National Seashore, finding a giant tun shell would've been a rare find, but finding one with the animal still alive inside is absolutely incredible.

Prepare to be amazed as we bring you a sighting captured off the shores of Cape Lookout, North Carolina! In this jaw-dropping video, witness the unbelievable moment when a colossal hammerhead shark ventures into shallow waters.
