The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (abbreviated CPI(M) or CPM) is a communist party in India. The party emerged from a split from the Communist Party of India in 1964. The CPI(M) was formed at the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of India held in Calcutta from October 31 to November 7, 1964. The strength of CPI(M) is concentrated in the states of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura. As of 2015, CPI(M) is leading the state government in Tripura. It also leads the Left Front coalition of leftist parties. As of 2013, CPI(M) claimed to have 1,065,406 members.
CPI(M) is organised on the basis of democratic centralism, a principle conceived by Vladimir Lenin which entails democratic and open discussion on policy on the condition of unity in upholding the agreed upon policies. The highest body of the party is the Politburo.
History
Formation of CPI (M)
CPI(M) emerged from a division within the Communist Party of India (CPI). The undivided CPI had experienced a period of upsurge during the years following the Second World War. The CPI led armed rebellions in Telangana, Tripura, and Kerala. However, it soon abandoned the strategy of armed revolution in favour of working within the parliamentary framework. In 1950 B. T. Ranadive, the CPI general secretary and a prominent representative of the radical sector inside the party, was demoted on grounds of left-adventurism.
CPI wants to reunify with CPI(M): Could it lead to the revival of the Left? | Let Me Explain
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has once again raised the proposal to reunify with the CPI(M). The proposal has been mooted several times in the past but has never materialised.
This week on Let Me Explain, Anna Isaac looks at why the plan to reunify the two Communist parties hasn’t seen the light of day and whether a reunification could lead to the revival of the Left in India.
Note: S Sudhakar Reddy has been erroneously referred to as the General Secretary of the CPI. He is the former General Secretary. The error is regretted.

A CPI(M) Rally that Wasn't | #WestBengalElection
In the high pitched electoral battle of #Nandigram, there is an intense focus on the two bigwigs that are going against each other: Current CM #MamataBanerjee from TMC and ex-aide to the CM, Suvendu Adhikari, from BJP. But there is a third candidate in the fray who hasn’t been getting much media attention. #MeenakshiMukherjee, president of the West Bengal unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), is the candidate for CPI(M)-ISF alliance from this constituency.

DMK finalizes alliance with CPI(M) ahead of TN polls; six seats given
The DMK-CPI (M) alliance in the poll-bound Tamil Nadu has been sealed now. CPI(M) will be contesting the upcoming elections in the state of Tamil Nadu from six seats. The seat-sharing talks between DMK and the CPI(M) took place in the party office, wherein the CPI(M) demanded six to eight seats from DMK chief MK Stalin. The move comes as a huge boost for the DMK party because the party has successfully implemented its plan of giving a lesser share of seats to the alliance partners, and will be contesting elections in more than 180 seats. How ‘Hidden Alliance’ Of BJP, CPI(M) Bluffed CM Mamata In Bengal Cooperative Elections
After emerging as an opposition in West Bengal, BJP is leaving no stone unturned to unseat CM Mamata Banerjee in the state in the elections. In another step to tackle TMC, political observers have hinted at a major coalition in the state. There were murmurs in the political arena of a ‘possible reunion between BJP and CPI(M)’ in West Bengal. The development comes after the Bengal Cooperative elections, where BJP and CPI(M) leaders contested under an organisation named – ‘Samabay Bachao Samiti (Save Cooperatives Organisation)’.

The Party Congress of India’s largest communist party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) began on the April 6. The Congress will formulate strategies on combating the growing rightward shift in Indian politics as well as on strengthening campaigns highlighting socialism as the only real alternative to capitalism. The meeting attended by over 800 delegates from across the country, will also elect the Party leadership for the next three years.
And since Newslaundry goes where nobody else goes, we decided to go check out one of her rallies in Nandigram. The idea was to try and get an interview with her, know what she is all about and what is the #CPIM strategy in Nandigram, specifically, and West Bengal, overall.
It really didn’t go as planned.
