China, Philippines ships collide in South China Sea | DW News
China claims almost all of the South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal. Several Southeast Asian states have made conflicting and sometimes overlapping claims in the South China Sea. Beijing rejected a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that said that China's claims did not have any basis under international law. In July, China and the Philippines reached a "provisional arrangement" aimed at ending maritime confrontations near the Second Thomas Shoal, allowing Manila to resupply the atoll. The Philippines deliberately ran aground the Sierra Madre ship on the Second Tomas Shoal in 1999 in order to assert Manila's sovereignty over the area. Filipino troops are stationed on the shipwreck and require regular resupply.

China’s Auto Takeover: BYD Vs. Tesla And The Battle For EV Supremacy | CNBC Marathon
CNBC examines China’s rapidly growing automotive industry, focusing on its technological advancements, increasing exports, and a lack of interest in American car brands.

The company is aggressively expanding globally, exporting over 240,000 cars to 70 countries last year. During Tesla's Q4 earnings call, Elon Musk warned that Chinese automakers could "demolish most other car companies in the world" unless regulators intervene.
Detroit automakers like General Motors reaped huge profits selling cars to Chinese consumers after China opened its auto market to foreign firms in the ...

No antimony from China means no artillery shells for NATO, Ukraine
NATO arsenals are rapidly depleting, due to massive draws for wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The German army now only has enough munitions on hand to sustain combat operations for two days.
Especially critical is the shortage of artillery shells. The United States and the EU have production orders for over 3 million shells. However, munitions factories are already far behind, and China's recent export bans of certain rare earth elements, and of antimony, will make production of these munitions impossible in the short term.
Companies are scrambling to find investors to open new mining projects, and are careful to explain that these startup mining projects carry a great deal of risk: permitting, environmental reviews, and surveying can take years; and, the commercial viability wi...

The Biden administration set a climate goal that 50 percent of all new car sales in the US would be electric by 2030. Meanwhile, China reached that milestone this year, in 2024. This video explains how China was able to fast-track EV adoption and develop an EV battery that rivals what any other country has been able to do so far. It’s been a decade of government strategies that have created some of the biggest battery companies in the world, like CATL and BYD.
The Biden administration wants to keep Chinese cars and batteries out of the country — but our video explains what kind of position that puts the US in in terms of meeting its own climate goals.

During Tesla's Q4 earnings call, Elon Musk warned that Chinese automakers could "demolish most other car companies in the world" unless regulators intervene.
Detroit automakers like General Motors reaped huge profits selling cars to Chinese consumers after China opened its auto market to foreign firms in the 1980s. However, those lucrative days appear to be over. Chinese firms have caught up with, and in some cases surpassed, the foreign companies that once taught them the automotive trade. Jeep’s joint venture has already gone bankrupt, and one industry analyst predicts that Ford, GM, and others—such as Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan—could withdraw from the Chinese market within the next five years.
Today, China has the manufacturing capacity to supply half the world’s cars and is setting its sights on the U.S. market. While Chinese-owned brands like Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus are already present in the U.S., no purely Chinese brands have entered the market yet. In May 2024, President Biden imposed steep tariffs on Chinese automakers, doubling the price of imported EVs. However, some insiders believe tariffs might be ineffective in the long term and could cause more harm than good.

Companies are scrambling to find investors to open new mining projects, and are careful to explain that these startup mining projects carry a great deal of risk: permitting, environmental reviews, and surveying can take years; and, the commercial viability will be in doubt, given price and production advantages from existing mines in BRICS countries.

Preserving a Fading Culture in the Mountains of China
The Akha people live high up in the mountains of Yunnan, one of the most ethnically diverse regions of China, but their culture is under threat as younger people choose to leave their villages and adopt mainstream Chinese culture. The Cheesemaker Changing Chinese Food Culture
China may seem like the least likely place to find locally made artisanal cheeses—such as camembert, ricotta, and blue cheese—but Liu Yang, a Chinese cheesemaker, is changing that. Our host Nicola Davis visits Yang's cheese shop in Beijing, tries his handcrafted cheeses, and visits the dairy farm where he sources his milk from. As Yang talks about the young dairy industry in China, he believes his "customers need to be educated so they can understand, and fall in love with cheese culture."

I will take you guys to my grandfather's studio! He is actually an artist and he draws Traditional Chinese painting.
Today we will learn Chinese while he draws painting. It will be so interesting!
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guóhuà, meaning "national" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.

Hong Kong's world-class health care system plagued by shortage of doctors
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://sc.mp/subscribe-youtube
Hong Kong has one of the world’s top-ranked medical services, providing the city’s 7.4 million people with care that has a good reputation for availability, affordability and quality.
But the universal, low-cost public health care system has a downside – including long waiting times and relatively less comfort and privacy than private-sector patients get.
The public system also faces a shortage of practitioners, a serious issue the city will increasingly have to grapple with as its population continues to grow and age.
Pressure on the public system has already started pushing patients – those who can afford it – to the private-sector medical care in Hong Kong is second-most expensive in the world, after ...

China's city lockdown to control coronavirus spread is 'most extraordinary': Health expert
One critical issue in the China coronavirus outbreak is whether the human-to-human transmission will be sustained, says Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Procter & Gamble said Thursday that it is monitoring the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus as the World Health Organization weighs whether to call the virus a global health emergency.
The global consumer giant, which owns brands such as Vicks and Pampers, counts China as one of its two largest markets, along with the United States. Halfway through fiscal 2020, P&G said that it has seen growth of 13% in the Asian country.
The virus was first diagnosed less than a month ago and has already killed at least 17 people in China. Roughly 650 cases of the virus have been reported in China, and several ...

China medical professionals not here to treat Covid-19 patients, says Health DG
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the team of medical professionals from China will not be treating Covid-19 patients in Malaysia.
Instead, they would be sharing their experiences of Covid-19 treatment and research.
Dr Noor Hisham was responding to a question on the credibility of Chinese medical professionals, as China has been accused of not reporting the true situation in its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
On April 17, China raised its estimates of the death toll in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, by 50%. It has denied covering up the extent of the Covid-19 outbreak.

If you’re on the wrong side of U.S. President Donald Trump you certainly know about it, and right now, the focus of his fury is the World Health Organisation. He accuses the W.H.O. of being China’s lapdog and says it’s responsible for helping the communist regime hide the true extent of the coronavirus disaster. As punishment Trump has withdrawn American funding to the organisation. Australia too has questions about the W.H.O., specifically what it did in China and when? By comparison with the U.S. leader though, our prime minister Scott Morrison is far more diplomatic. He wants a review of the W.H.O’s role, but he’s also proposed the health body be given additional powers, inc...

President Donald Trump, who put a hold on WHO funding yesterday, isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting COVID-19. But there's no doubt that the WHO's response destroyed much of its credibility, damaged the field of public health, and failed to contain the pandemic.
The WHO's actions in response to COVID-19, in part, stemmed from its overly deferential stance towards China, which is its second-biggest financial contributor among 194 member states.
"A phenomenal collective action by the people of China to this response" is how Bruce Aylward, head of the joint WHO-China mission, described China's handling of the outbreak on February 25, 2020, a day after WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised China's "rapid response," which he claimed "changed the course of this epidemic."
The WHO also praised China for releasing the virus's genome while neglecting to mention that it took them at least 17 days to do so. It didn't report human-to-human transmission until late January—even though Chinese doctors suspected it at least a month earlier. Although the extreme lockdown of Wuhan likely saved thousands of lives, WHO scientists weren't allowed into Wuhan until 3 weeks after the outbreak first came to light, leaving open many questions about measures the government took in the interim. Meanwhile, the WHO praised the country for its supposed openness.
"China took action at the epicenter, and that helped prevent the spread to other provinces and the rest of the world," Ghebreyesus said on February 15.
"As China has shown, this does not need to be a pandemic if we take action," WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan said on February 28.
As the virus continued spreading across Europe and reached America, the WHO recommended "no interference with international travel."
One country that ignored this advice was Taiwan, which also warned the WHO that it suspected that the virus was spreading through human-to-human transmission, yet was ignored. Taiwan, which has one of the lowest rates of known COVID-19 infections per capita, was prevented from joining the WHO as a member country in 2015 by China, which refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's independence.
In late March, World Health Organization epidemiologist Bruce Aylward declined to answer a Hong Kong reporter's question about Taiwan—or even acknowledge its existence.
As Taiwan was distributing face masks to its citizens, the WHO was advising the rest of the world that they were unnecessary—and initially, the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Surgeon General followed its lead.
But health experts pointed to mounting evidence that masks can help slow the spread of respiratory disease, especially among asymptomatic carriers, a population that the WHO maintains is virtually nonexistent despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
In mid-February, the WHO trumpeted good news from China, claiming confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19 had declined, ignoring evidence that it may have been a statistical anomaly. U.S. intelligence, meanwhile, believes that China has entirely misrepresented both case numbers and death tolls, according to Bloomberg News.
Finally on March 11, after Italy was already in full national lockdown with more than 10,000 cases, the WHO finally acknowledged the true magnitude of the crisis, declaring a global pandemic.
As the death toll climbs above 100,000, the global economy remains in crisis, and billions of lives are disrupted, it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job, the nightmare we're living through might not have happened at all.

Pressure on the public system has already started pushing patients – those who can afford it – to the private-sector medical care in Hong Kong is second-most expensive in the world, after the United States.

Roughly 650 cases of the virus have been reported in China, and several other countries have confirmed cases. U.S. health authorities have quarantined one Washington state man with the virus. Symptoms range from a mild cough to fever to pneumonia.
Seven Chinese cities near Wuhan are under lockdown in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. Lunar New Year’s events in Beijing, China, have reportedly been canceled.
“I have no idea what the investments are going to be relative to the new virus,” Chief Financial and Operating Officer Jon Moeller told analysts.
Moeller said the company will monitor the virus as it relates to the health of its employees and the broader community. He also said that the virus could have broad impacts beyond its business in China.
“It can also affect consumer confidence and large parts of the market. It can affect travel, which does affect our business, and so it’s one of the many pieces of volatility that’s just important as we think about the prospects for the future,” Moeller said.
P&G products like its pricey SK-II skincare line are often sold in airports and are popular with international tourists.
The company reported its fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday. P&G beat Wall Street’s earnings estimates but fell short on revenue. It also raised its full-year outlook. Shares were trading down less than 1% in morning trading.

He wants a review of the W.H.O’s role, but he’s also proposed the health body be given additional powers, including the right to forcibly enter countries to avoid repeating the COVID-19 disaster. Liz Hayes asks the question - who exactly is the W.H.O?
