Germany's embattled Christian Democrats have failed to discover the source of secret donations Helmut Kohl admitted accepting, but have traced more secret money that was given to the former chancellor.
A spokesman told reporters after Friday's meeting of party leaders in Bonn that interviews with key players in the scandal failed to reveal who gave Kohl two (M) million marks (one (M) million U-S dollars) the former chancellor said he received between 1993 and 1998.
Chairman Wolfgang Schaeuble and other leaders were clearly disappointed with the quality of information they received during interviews over the last days with party advisers who set up the network of secret party accounts.

Di...

(11 Jan 2000) German/Nat
The new leader of Germany's opposition conservatives has conceded that a suitcase full of cash he once got from a key figure in the party financing scandal was not properly reported.
But fighting to avoid being swept up in the controversy that has engulfed ex-chancellor Helmut Kohl, Wolfgang Schaeuble insisted he did nothing wrong and refused to resign.
The latest revelation is sure to weaken the conservatives, who just a few months ago were capitalising on voter discontent with Chancellor Schroeder to stage a political comeback.
Wolfgang Schaeuble took over the Christian Democrats after Helmut Kohl's 1998 electoral defeat.
His popularity has sunk in recent weeks, with opinion polls showing most Germans don't believe his contention that he knew nothing about Kohl's private slush funds.
Fighting to avoid being swept up in the party financing scandal that has engulfed his predecessor, Schaeuble on Tuesday conceded that the 52-thousand U-S dollars cash donation he got from a German-Canadian businessman in 1994 was not properly reported.
But - speaking at the CDU party's interim Berlin headquarters - he insisted he had done nothing wrong.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
"During the researches in December - which the company of economic accountants Ernst and Young started - we established that the donation was not reported and published as it usually should have been with an amount of 100-thousand Deutschmarks ."

The party was not legally allowed to keep the money because the donor, Karlheinz Schreiber, did not want his name in party records.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
"It wasn't right but we have to sort it out. I have nothing to do with it, I'm just taking the responsibility in the public."
SUPER CAPTION: Wolfgang Schaeuble, chief of CDU party
Schaeuble insisted he had nothing to hide because he turned the cash over to the party treasurer, who was responsible for entering it into the books.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
"I haven't got any other donations from Mister Schreiber in cash or on another way. Of course I got donations during my career but never that high an amount."
SUPER CAPTION: Wolfgang Schaeuble, chief of CDU party
The latest revelation is sure to further weaken the conservatives, who just a few months ago were capitalising on voter discontent with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's austerity budget to stage a political comeback.
Schroeder declined to say on Tuesday what he thought of calls for Schaeuble's resignation, but suggested the conservative party chairman had damaged his own credibility by not revealing the cash contribution sooner.
Officials from Schroeder's SDP party however said that the scandal was no longer just about Kohl but about the integrity of the CDU party.
SOUNDBITE (GERMAN)
"It is not a scandal of Helmut Kohl anymore - it now a scandal of the CDU, a scandal of Helmut Kohl and Wolfgang Schaeuble."
SUPER CAPTION: Peter Struck, chief of the SPD parliamentary group
In December, Kohl admitted he had set up secret party accounts with money from donors who demanded anonymity - in violation of the party financing law Kohl himself had passed while chancellor.
In addition to possible charges of breach of trust against Kohl, a parliamentary committee is investigating whether any of the money was given in exchange for government favours - a charge Kohl vehemently denies.
Schaeuble has called on his former mentor to release all information about the funds - but the SDP says that won't do.

(4 Feb 2000) German/Nat
Indicating the party could do little more to clear up the scandal on its own, Schaeuble himself said he would leave further investigation to Bonn prosecutors pursuing a criminal investigation against Kohl and a parliament committee looking into whether decisions during Kohl's 16 years in power were bought.
He told a news conference that party findings included confirmation that the secret party accounts dated from 1971 - earlier than previously acknowledged - that they included accounts abroad and that Kohl had directly accepted more money than he has so far admitted.
Party manager Willi Hausmann said a top party official, Uwe Luethje, recalled that Kohl turned over up to three (M) million marks (up to one and a half million dollars) during 1989-92.
In a separate interview with Kohl, the former chancellor conceded that he had received funds during that period, but said the amount was significantly lower than Luethje's recollection, Hausmann said.
Expectations had been raised that the party investigation would go a long way to clearing up the scandal - most
significantly by identifying the source of covert donations to combat suggestions that Kohl had traded government
favours for campaign contributions.
General-Secretary Angela Merkel told the news conference that that hope had not been fulfilled.
Schaeuble expressed regret that Kohl has persisted in his refusal to identify the secret donors himself.
Meanwhile, party officials rallied around Schaeuble on Friday who has suffered a credibility crisis in the scandal.
Schaeuble had mostly faced ominous silence from top officials after he admitted earlier this week to a second
meeting with German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber, whom Schaeuble previously acknowledged had given him an off-the-books cash donation of 100-thousand marks (52-thousand dollars).
The admission - after Schaeuble had repeatedly said he'd met Schreiber only once - came as the party's former
treasurer said Schreiber had given the money to her and not to Schaeuble at all.
The mood, however, reversed in Schaeuble's favour after both Kohl and Weyrauch corroborated Schaeuble's version of events.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
"It is very clear for CDU Germany that there is no alternative to a complete clearing-up of the well-known offences against the law. The CDU by itself could motivate involved people to testify. For further investigation the public prosecutors are in charge. And third it is very regrettable that Helmut Kohl still refuses to testify."
