The Standard & Poor's 500, often abbreviated as the S&P 500, or just "the S&P", is an American stock market index based on the market capitalizations of 500 large companies having common stock listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ. The S&P 500 index components and their weightings are determined by S&P Dow Jones Indices. It differs from other U.S. stock market indices, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the Nasdaq Composite index, because of its diverse constituency and weighting methodology. It is one of the most commonly followed equity indices, and many consider it one of the best representations of the U.S. stock market, and a bellwether for the U.S. economy. The National Bureau of Economic Research has classified common stocks as a leading indicator of business cycles.
The S&P 500 was developed and continues to be maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, a joint venture majority-owned by McGraw Hill Financial. S&P Dow Jones Indices publishes many stock market indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P MidCap 400, the S&P SmallCap 600, and the S&P Composite 1500. It is a free-float capitalization-weighted index, and has many ticker symbols, such as: ^GSPC, INX, and $SPX.

Database index
A database index is a data structure that improves the speed of data retrieval operations on a database table at the cost of additional writes and storage space to maintain the index data structure. Indexes are used to quickly locate data without having to search every row in a database table every time a database table is accessed. Indexes can be created using one or more columns of a database table, providing the basis for both rapid random lookups and efficient access of ordered records.
An index is a copy of select columns of data from a table that can be searched very efficiently that also includes a low-level disk block address or direct link to the complete row of data it was copied from. Some databases extend the power of indexing by letting developers create indices on functions or expressions. For example, an index could be created on upper(last_name), which would only store the upper case versions of the last_name field in the index. Another option sometimes supported is the use of partial indices, where index entries are created only for those records that satisfy some conditional expression. A further aspect of flexibility is to permit indexing on user-defined functions, as well as expressions formed from an assortment of built-in functions.

In statistics and research design, an index is a composite statistic – a measure of changes in a representative group of individual data points, or in other words, a compound measure that aggregates multiple indicators. Indexes summarize and rank specific observations.
Much data in the field of social sciences is represented in various indices such as Gender Gap Index, Human Development Index or the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Item in indexes are usually weighted equally, unless there are some reasons against it (for example, if two items reflect essentially the same aspect of a variable, they could have a weight of 0.5 each).
Constructing the items involves four steps. First, items should be selected based on their face validity, unidimensionality, the degree of specificity in which a dimension is to be measured, and their amount of variance. Items should be empirically related to one another, which leads to the second step of examining their multivariate relationships. Third, indexes scores are designed, which involves determining their score ranges and weights for the items. Finally, indexes should be validateds, which involves testing whether they can predict indicators related to the measured variable not used in their construction.

The Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) is an index of the 500 biggest companies in the United States by market capitalization trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. Its largest components by weight are mega-cap stocks such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Tesla (TSLA) and many more.
The S&P500 ETF/index investing, is one of the easiest way to gain exposure to the US market without the trouble of individual stock-picking. When you invest in this type of fund, you're instantly investing in hundreds of stocks at once. You don't need to research which stocks you're investing in or worry about whether you should buy or sell particular investments -- the fund takes care of all of that for you.

Indexes in SQL are used to speed up SQL queries. A database index works much like an index in a book. For example, if you have a database table with a list of people, a common query would be to lookup someone by name. Creating an index means the database will not have to scan the entire table looking for matches. Instead, it will restrict its search to a small portion of the rows. The Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) is an index of the 500 biggest companies in the United States by market capitalization trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. Its largest components by weight are mega-cap stocks such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Tesla (TSLA) and many more.
The S&P500 ETF/index investing, is one of the easiest way to gain exposure to the US market without the trouble of individual stock-picking. When you invest in this type of fund, you're instantly investing in hundreds of stocks at once. You don't need to research which stocks you're investing in or worry about whether you should buy or sell particular investments -- the fund takes care of all of that for you.

The Standard & Poor's 500, often abbreviated as the S&P 500, or just "the S&P", is an American stock market index based on the market capitalizations of 500 large companies having common stock listed on the NYSE or NASDAQ. The S&P 500 index components and their weightings are determined by S&P Dow Jones Indices. Indexes in SQL are used to speed up SQL queries. A database index works much like an index in a book. For example, if you have a database table with a list of people, a common query would be to lookup someone by name. Creating an index means the database will not have to scan the entire table looking for matches. Instead, it will restrict its search to a small portion of the rows.
In this video we use a table with 100 million rows to illustrate how much an index can change the speed of a query.
