A collegiate institute is a school either of secondary education or higher education. The definition varies regionally, and has been largely unused outside of Canada since the early 20th century.
Canada
In Canada, collegiate institute has a specific meaning. In 1871, the province of Ontario set up two parallel secondary education systems. Collegiate institutes offered arts and humanities education, including Greek and Latin, for university-bound students. High schools offered vocational and science programs for those planning to enter the workforce upon graduation. This system was later adopted by other provinces including Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
It was quite quickly realized that this division did not work very well. Over time, high schools responded to students' needs and increasingly offered the arts courses that were essential for the workforce. At the same time, as universities began teaching science and engineering, so did the collegiate institutes. Within a decade, the distinctions between the two systems were greatly blurred, and eventually the two systems were merged in to a single secondary school system. Most new Ontario schools were from then on named either high schools or secondary schools, but the term collegiate institutes is still used for new schools from time to time. Most cities, the oldest and most established high schools are still known as collegiate institutes. Most cities in Ontario have a collegiate institute near the centre. In some cases, a more academic focus has been retained, and collegiate institutes are thus sometimes regarded as better than "standard" high schools.
Charles William Jefferys (August 25, 1869 – October 8, 1951) was a Canadian painter, illustrator, author, and teacher best known as a historical illustrator.
Biography
Born in Rochester, England, Jefferys arrived in Toronto, Ontario (after living in Philadelphia and Hamilton, Ontario) with his family around 1880. After attending school, he apprenticed with the york, Lithography Company from 1885 to 1890. From 1889 to 1892 he worked for the Toronto Globe as an illustrator and artist. From 1893 to 1901, he worked for the New York Herald. Returning to Toronto, he became a magazine and book illustrator. Along with Ivor Lewis and other artists, Jefferys co-founded the Graphic Arts Club (later named the Canadian Society of Graphic Art), which by the 1940s became the primary artists' group in Canada. As well, from 1912 to 1939 he taught painting and drawing in the Department of Architecture at the University of Toronto.
During World War I he was commissioned by the Canadian War Records department to paint soldiers training at Camp Petawawa and Niagara.
Named after Charles William Jefferys, a Canadian artist whose work has contributed much to education in the areas of Canadian History and Art, the school is home to the Visual Arts Program offered in facilities by a teaching staff, many of whom are practicing artists. The first Head of the Art Department was James Meechan, the stained glass artist, who selected only professional artists for the department staff. Additionally, it is home to the ESTeM Enriched Science, Technology and Mathematics Program - a project based, hands-on, exploratory approach to the Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Technology. Students at C. W. Jefferys consistently rank among the top winners in mathematics and science competitions, and each year, many of them are recipients of numerous bursaries and entrance scholarships to some of the province's top colleges and universities. The post-secondary acceptance rate is 75%. This helped by student success initiatives supporting "at risk" students through the Learning to 18 pilot project, "Stay Connected" and the credit recovery program offered at the school.
