A prime minister is the most senior minister of cabinet in the executive branch of government, often in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. In many systems, the prime minister selects and may dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the government. In most systems, the prime minister is the presiding member and chairman of the cabinet. In a minority of systems, notably in semi-presidential systems of government, a prime minister is the official who is appointed to manage the civil service and execute the directives of the head of state.
In parliamentary systems fashioned after the Westminster system, the prime minister is the presiding and actual head of government and head of the executive branch. In such systems, the head of state or the head of state's official representative (i.e. the monarch, president, or governor-general) usually holds a largely ceremonial position, although often with reserve powers.
The prime minister is often, but not always, a member of parliament and is expected with other ministers to ensure the passage of bills through the legislature. In some monarchies the monarch may also exercise executive powers (known as the royal prerogative) that are constitutionally vested in the crown and may be exercised without the approval of parliament.
The President of the Government of Spain (Spanish:Presidente del Gobierno), formally known by English-speaking nations and formally translated by the European Commission Directorate-General in English as Prime Minister is the head of Government of Spain. The current office is established under the Constitution of 1978.
The King of Spain nominates a candidate for the presidency who stands before the Congress of Deputies of Spain, the lower house of the Cortes Generales (parliament), for a vote of confidence in a process known as a parliamentarian investiture, effectively an indirect election of the head of government by the elected Congress of Deputies. In practice, the Prime Minister is almost always the leader of the largest party in the Congress. Since current constitutional practice in Spain calls for the King to act on the advice of his ministers, the Prime Minister is effectively the country's chief executive.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer orders public inquiry into Southport attack | BBC News
The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said the UK faces a "new threat" after the Southport murders, and that "terrorism has changed".
This comes after Axel Rudakubana, 18, pleaded guilty to murdering three girls in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class last year.
Starmer said the threat comes from "extreme violence carried out by loners, misfits, young men in their bedrooms" and that the state's failure to prevent Rudakubana's murders "leaps off the page".
After the violent events in Southport, riots erupted across the UK, with some social media posts wrongly claiming that Rudakubana, who was born in Cardiff, was actually an asylum seeker.

To the people of Gaza, I have a simple message: This war can end tomorrow. It can end if Hamas lays down its arms and returns our hostages.
Hamas is holding 101 hostages in Gaza, who are citizens of 23 countries; citizens of Israel, but citizens of many other countries.
Israel is committed to doing everything in our power to bring all of them home.
And Israel will guarantee the safety of all those who return our hostages.
But to those who would harm our hostages, I have another message: Israel will hunt you down and bring you to justice.
I also have a message of hope to the peoples of the region: The axis of terror that was built by Iran is collapsing before our eyes.
Nasrallah is gone. His deputy Mohsen is gone. Haniyeh is gone. Deif is gone. Sinwar is gone.
The reign of terror that the Iranian regime has imposed on its own people and on the peoples of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen – this too will come to an end.
All those who seek a future of prosperity and peace in the Middle East should unite to build a better future. Together, we can push back the forces of darkness and create a future of light and hope for all of us”.

Liechtenstein, the world's fifth least populated democracy, is a country whose citizenship is sought after yet very exclusive. All of its adult citizens must vote, some of its citizens pass laws, and only one has the power to change it all. What makes Liechtenstein and its Liechtensteiners so different?

The head of government is either the highest or second highest official in the executive branch of a sovereign state, a federated state, or a self-governing colony, autonomous region, or other government who often presides over a cabinet, a group of ministers or secretaries who lead executive departments. "Head of government" is often differentiated from "head of state" (as in article 7 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, article 1 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons, including Diplomatic Agents and the United Nations protocol list),[1][2][3] as they may be separate positions, individuals, or roles depending on the country.
The authority of a head of government, such as a president, chancellor, or prime minister and the relationship between that position and other state institutions, such as the relation between the head of state and of the legislature, varies greatly among sovereign states, depending largely on the particular system of the government that has been chosen, won, or evolved over time.
In most parliamentary systems, including constitutional monarchies, the head of government is the de facto political leader of the government, and is answerable to at least one chamber of the legislature. Although there is often a formal reporting relationship to a head of state, the latter usually acts as a figurehead who may take the role of chief executive on limited occasions, either when receiving constitutional advice from the head of government or under specific provisions in a constitution.

Watch live from Downing Street as Sir Keir Starmer issues a statement following the Southport stabbings.
On Monday, an inquiry into the attack was announced by the government.
It came after Axel Rudakubana, 18, admitted murdering Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, in the attack in Southport, Merseyside, in July last year.

Our political editor Beth Rigby asks the prime minister if it is true that he withheld information about the Southport case.
Sir Keir Starmer replies by saying that he knew details of the attacker, Axel Rudakubana, as they were emerging, but it "would not have been right to disclose" them.

“One year ago, Yahya Sinwar, the terrorist chief of Hamas, launched the October 7th massacre against Israel. It was the bloodiest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. It was the worst attack on the Jewish state since the founding of Israel.
Sinwar’s terrorists murdered in cold blood 1,200 people. That's elderly people, Holocaust survivors, children. They brutally raped women. They beheaded men. They burned babies alive.
And they took 251 women, men and children hostage to the dungeons of Gaza.
Today, the mastermind of this day of sheer evil is no more.
Yahya Sinwar is dead.
He was killed in Rafah by the brave soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces.
While this is not the end of the war in Gaza, it's the beginning of the end.

Liechtenstein, the world's fifth least populated democracy, is a country whose citizenship is sought after yet very exclusive. All of its adult citizens must vote, some of its citizens pass laws, and only one has the power to change it all. What makes Liechtenstein and its Liechtensteiners so different?

Media reports have for the first time named 18 Indians who allegedly have stashed away almost 40 crore rupees between 2002 and 2004 in Liechtenstein bank. In fact, the list also mentions the money that they currently owe the government. Sources say that attempts have already begun to get 17 of these 18 to pay up. This comes on the day the panel on black money set up by the finance minister met for the first time. Download the Times Now India's Election HQ app and get all the election info at one go. Liechtenstein is ruled by an unelected prince who wields more political power than almost any other European monarch. Nestled between Switzerland and Austria, the tiny principality is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year.

In this series I will try to shine light to the political development in some of the countries not as prominently covered in the media outside the region. In this fourth clip I focus on the nations of Southern Europe (Cyprus, Greece, San Marino, Italy, Vatican City, Malta, Monaco, Andorra, Spain and Portugal) and their prime ministers, governments and political parties.
