Nursing Care of Burns: Integumentary System - Medical Surgical Nursing | @LevelUpRN
Cathy covers nursing care of patients with burns. She covers the key information you need to know in nursing school and for your nursing exams. This includes the phases of burn care and priorities during each phase, calculating the percentage of the patient's body affect by a burn using the Rule of Nines, identifying the depth of a burn injury and the characteristics based on depth, and calculating fluid requirements for fluid resuscitation using the Parkland Formula.
Our Medical-Surgical: Integumentary System video tutorial series is taught by Cathy Parkes BSN, RN, CWCN, PHN and intended to help RN and PN nursing students study for their nursing school exams, including the ATI, HESI and NCLEX.

HOW TO TREAT AND MANAGE BURNS AND SCALDS | DOCTOR EXPLAINS (plus first aid tips)
In this video you are going to learn how to treat a burn or

seek urgent medical attention.
Burns and scalds are damage to the skin usually caused by heat. Both are
treated in the same way.
A burn is caused by dry heat – by an iron or fire, for example. A scald is caused by something wet, such as hot water or steam.

white or charred skin.
Importantly, the amount of pain you feel isn't always
related to how serious the burn is and sometimes even a
serious burn can be painless.
1. Stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may
mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water, or smothering flames ...

Rule of Nines for Burns in Adults Nursing NCLEX Lecture w/ Examples
The rule of nines for burns in adults is used to calculate the total body surface area of a patient that has suffered from a burn.
The TBSA (total body surface area) percentage helps the medical team determine how severe the burns are (does the patient need to be admitted to a burn unit) and how much fluid replacement will be needed during the first 24 hours.
The percentage of body surface area burned is used in the Parkland Burn Formula to determine the total amount of fluid replacement that will be needed to help prevent hypovolemic shock.
Patients who have 15-25% or more of a BSA that is burned will definitely need fluid replacement.
WHY? After a severe burn (partial-thickness or more) the capillary permeability increases, which leads to the fluid shifting from the intravascular s...

In this video you are going to learn how to treat a burn or
scald at home and when you should go to the hospital or
seek urgent medical attention.
Burns and scalds are damage to the skin usually caused by heat. Both are
treated in the same way.
A burn is caused by dry heat – by an iron or fire, for example. A scald is caused by something wet, such as hot water or steam.
They can look very similar and can cause red or peeling
skin, blisters, swelling and changes to the skin such as
white or charred skin.
Importantly, the amount of pain you feel isn't always
related to how serious the burn is and sometimes even a
serious burn can be painless.
1. Stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may
mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water, or smothering flames with a blanket, but if you are going to do this don't put yourself at risk of getting burnt as well.
2.Next remove any clothing or jewellery near the burnt area of skin, including nappies / diapers. But do not try to remove anything that's stuck to the burnt skin, because this could cause more damage.
3. Cool the area for 20 minutes with cool running water if possible. DON'T USE ICE
4. Keep the person warm.
5. Cover the burn with cling film - aka saran wrap. Lay it over the top of the burn rather than wrapping.
6. Use over the counter pain relief to control pain.
7. Elevate the burnt limb.
GO TO THE HOSPITAL IF YOU HAVE:
- Large burns bigger than the size of the affected persons hand
- deep burns of any size that cause white or charred skin
- burns on the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints, or genitals
- all chemical and electrical burns
- any other injuries that need treating
- any signs of shock – symptoms include cold, clammy skin, sweating, rapid, shallow breathing, and weakness or dizziness
You should also go to hospital if you or the person who has been burned:
- Is under the age of 10
- has a medical condition, such as heart, lung or liver disease, or diabetes
- has a weakened immune system
- have inhaled smoke.

WHY? After a severe burn (partial-thickness or more) the capillary permeability increases, which leads to the fluid shifting from the intravascular space to the interstitial space. This depletes fluid volume in the intravascular space, leaving the heart with barely anything to pump to the vital organs and tissues. This can lead to death.
Therefore, Lactated Ringers (an isotonic solution) are prescribed to help increase the intravascular compartment.
Rule of Nines Calculations:
Adult:
Head and Neck: 9% (4.5% anterior and posterior)
Right Arm: 9% (4.5% anterior and posterior)
Left Arm: 9% (4.5% anterior and posterior)
Trunk: 36% (18% anterior and posterior)
Perineum: 1%
Right Leg: 18% (9% anterior and posterior)
Left Leg: 18% (9% anterior and posterior)
TOTAL: 100%

https://wn.com/Rule_Of_Nines_For_Burns_In_Adults_Nursing_Nclex_Lecture_W_Examples
WHY? After a severe burn (partial-thickness or more) the capillary permeability increases, which leads to the fluid shifting from the intravascular space to the interstitial space. This depletes fluid volume in the intravascular space, leaving the heart with barely anything to pump to the vital organs and tissues. This can lead to death.
Therefore, Lactated Ringers (an isotonic solution) are prescribed to help increase the intravascular compartment.
Rule of Nines Calculations:
Adult:
Head and Neck: 9% (4.5% anterior and posterior)
Right Arm: 9% (4.5% anterior and posterior)
Left Arm: 9% (4.5% anterior and posterior)
Trunk: 36% (18% anterior and posterior)
Perineum: 1%
Right Leg: 18% (9% anterior and posterior)
Left Leg: 18% (9% anterior and posterior)
TOTAL: 100%

Burns Oregon Discovers Progress
Renovating and old downtown is not easy. First you have to have folks with money purchase the property and bring with the dollars a vision. But you also have to have buy in from a town that may not see the vision. In Burns, Oregon the two are coming together to make this one of our favorite destinations.

Northern Paiutes or their ancestors, who were hunter-gatherers, have lived in the region for thousands of years. Since the arrival of Euro-Americans in the 19th century, cattle ranching and other forms of agriculture have dominated land use in the area. In 1930, logging in the mountains north of Burns led to the creation of Hines, a lumber company town, and the timber industry remained important to the local economy until the 1990s. In addition to ranching, a variety of private and public enterprises support the Burns–Hines economy in the 21st century. Annual events include a migratory bird festival, the county fair, and a country music jamboree.
