February 1, 2023, marks two years since Myanmar’s military staged a coup and seized control of the popularly elected government. Since the takeover, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s junta has remained embroiled in a bitter civil war with opposition groups across the country, resulting in thousands of casualties and mass displacement. Under military rule, the nation’s currency has fallen 40 per cent, while opium production, driven by economic instability, has soared to a nine-year high. Experts doubt the junta will make good on its promise to hold elections by August 2023.

Reality of life under military rule becoming apparent in Myanmar
The reality of life under military rule is becoming apparent in Myanmar, as fear and confusion grows across the country. Less than 24 hours after a coup d'etat, key civilian leaders have been detained and other lawmakers are said to be under guard in the capital Nay Pi Taw. The Myanmar military has declared a year-long state of emergency, and army chief Min Aung Hlaing is now in charge. The timing of the coup was strategic -- just hours before the new parliament was set to convene.

Myanmar, from democracy to military dictatorship • FRANCE 24 English
Myanmar's junta has executed four prisoners including a former lawmaker from Aung San Suu Kyi's party and a prominent activist, state media said Monday, in the country's first use of capital punishment in decades. The executions sparked widespread condemnation, heightened fears that more death sentences will follow, and prompted calls for the international community to take sterner measures against the already isolated junta.

Myanmar's military government extends state of emergency for six months
Myanmar will not be represented at an international meeting of foreign ministers this week. The country's military government has extended a state of emergency for another six months. The ASEAN-led gathering had asked Myanmar to send a non-military representative to the talks in Cambodia, but that request was rejected. ASEAN has barred Myanmar's military government from its meetings since last year.
