The Role of the Freedmen’s Bureau | Reconstruction 360
The Freedmen’s Bureau had responsibility for every aspect of the lives of formerly enslaved people, and was in charge of land that came under federal control during and after the Civil War. In 1872, Congress shut the Freedmen’s Bureau down, but today Freedmen's Bureau records are a vital resource for anyone seeking information about African-American history in the post-Civil War and Reconstruction eras.

Freedmen's Bureau | Celebrate Black History
In honor of Celebrate Black History Month, presented by Ford Motor Company Fund, take a closer look at objects from the collections of The Henry Ford that help us learn more about life after the Civil War for some of the 4 million newly freed people who worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau to build schools, negotiate legal contracts, and mediate conflict.
Freedmen’s Bureau officials encouraged people to deposit their savings in the private Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company. Account holders believed their monies were safe, but the deposits were not guaranteed. Changed lending policies in 1870, the economic panic of 1873, and mismanagement put investments at risk. The bank closed in 1874.

The Freedmen's Bureau Records
Researching African-American family histories may present special challenges for the genealogical researcher. In this presentation, Carol Beauchamp, from FBCL’s Genealogy and Local History department, will talk about the Freedmen’s Bureau Records.
The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands -- better known as the Freedmen’s Bureau -- was established in 1865 by the War Department. It was created to help newly freed slaves and the destitute get back on their feet after the Civil War. This was accomplished by helping the freedmen with food, clothing, shelter, education, and employment.
The agency generated a body of records including letters, labor contracts, reports, marriage, military, and census records, food ration lists, and more. It is the most extensive record collection ...

It is the most extensive record collection for African Americans after the Civil War. Documents associated with the Freedmen’s Bureau often provide full names, residences, and often the names of former masters and plantations. This presentation will examine different types of records created by the field offices within the Freedmen’s Bureau and what databases to use to find them.
