Buckie Thistle Football Club are a senior football club based in the town of Buckie, Moray, who currently play in Scotland's Highland Football League. Founded in 1889, they are also known as The Jags and play their football at Victoria Park, Buckie.
History
Although there is no accurate date for Buckie Thistle's formation, it is widely accepted that the club were formed in 1889. The early years saw the club play a number of challenge matches before being accepted into the Banff and District League. It was not until the 1909–10 season that Buckie Thistle joined the Highland League, becoming the first team from Banffshire to be accepted into the league, Morayshire having been represented for several years by Forres Mechanics and Elgin City. Buckie have since gone on to win ten league titles as well as numerous cup competitions. Buckie had to wait 52 years between their eighth (1957–58) and ninth (2009–10) title wins.
Buckie Thistle's first-choice kit is identical to that of Celtic's green and white hoops and local legend has it that Celtic donated "a hamper of shirts and balls" in the early 1900s when the club hit hard times. In 1989 Celtic came north to play a friendly to mark the Jags centenary year and earlier, at the start of the 1980s, they had visited Victoria Park to play in a fund-raising match for the spires appeal of St. Peters RC Church.
Thistle Football Club (also known as Glasgow Thistle Football Club) was a football club based in the Oatlands area of Glasgow. The club was briefly a member of the Scottish Football League Division Two and has been described as the most insignificant and least successful to have entered the League. They played at Braehead Park.
History
The club was formed in 1875 and became founder member of the Scottish Football Alliance in 1891. Although they initially struggled in the competition they were one of the members invited to form the new Division Two of the Scottish League for the 1893–94 season. The club failed to make an impact, suffering some heavy defeats, including a 13–1 reverse at Partick Thistle on 10 March 1894, the largest defeat in the Scottish League up to that point; it has only been exceeded by Dundee Wanderers' 15–1 loss to Airdrieonians the following season. Finishing bottom of the league, the club folded before the re-election meeting, despite takings of £118 at a benefit match between Sunderland and a Scottish Football League XI.
Buckie (Scottish Gaelic:Bucaidh) is a burgh town (defined as such in 1888) on the Moray Firth coast of Scotland in Moray. Buckie was the largest town in Banffshire by some thousands of inhabitants before regionalisation in 1975 removed that political division from the map of Scotland. The town is the third largest in the Moray Council area after Elgin and Forres and within the definitions of statistics published by the General Register Office for Scotland was ranked at number 75 in the list of population estimates for settlements in Scotland mid-year 2006. Buckie lies virtually equidistant to Banff to the east and Elgin to the west with both communities being approximately 17 miles distant whilst Keith lies 12 miles to the south by road.
Etymology
The origin of the name of the town has caused some debate and although the folk etymology is that Buckie is named after a seashell (genusbuccinum) the reality is that the shared marine background is merely a coincidence. The name Buckie would originally have occurred in identifying a place that was not immediately adjacent to the sea so we must seek alternative etymological sources. Unfortunately in one of the earlier books on Scottish place names Buckie on the Moray Firth does not receive a mention although Buckie, spelt the same way, in the Balquhidder district of Perthshire is described as being derived from the Gaelic word boc or Welshbowk, both meaning a buck or male deer so this would suggest the meaning of Buckie as place where male deer gather and this specifically would most likely have been the valley of what is known today as the Buckie Burn.

Buckie is the next sizable town to the west of Cullen. It has a Tesco and a few other proper stores as well (books, binocs, and restaurants). It's a fishing town with a larger harbor and fishing companies. We lucked into a sunny day and after this walk, we walked the 7 miles along the coast back to Cullen. I didn't film that walk as we were all together as a family with lots of breaks, including a pub in Findochty (pronounced "finnecky" or at least that's how it sounded to me. All in all, it was a beautiful day.
