Athens has a lot to offer visitors, whether you’re staying for a few days or a week. In fact, there are so many things to do in Athens, Georgia, that everyone—from history buffs and culinary experts to sports fanatics and nature lovers—is guaranteed to have a good time. Sports fans will love watching the Bulldogs perform in their hometown.
If they’re playing elsewhere, you can catch them at one of Athens’s many sports bars—soak up the exuberant atmosphere while you down a beer or two. You can also go on a treasure hunt: walk or cycle around town for the thirty or so Dawgs statues. Finally, head to the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall Sports Museum for your fix of Georgia sports history. If nature’s your thing, head to the 113-acre Walker Park. There are splash pads, playgrounds, green lawns, and even professionally planned mountain bike trails. You can also head to the corner of South Finley and Dearing Streets to spend some time with America’s only tree that owns the land around it.
Oh, and be sure to stop in at Bear Hollow, a sanctuary for animals that can’t be released back into the wild. Athens is a city in northeast Georgia. It's known for its antebellum architecture. It marks the start of the state's Antebellum Trail of historic Civil War towns. The T.R.R. Cobb House, the mansion of a mid-19th-century lawyer, has period furniture and exhibits related to Southern history. Nearby, the Taylor Grady House is a Greek Revival mansion, and the Church-Waddel-Brumby House dates from the early 19th century.

Athens is a consolidated city-county in the U.S. state of Georgia. Downtown Athens lies about 70 miles (110 km) northeast of downtown Atlanta.[6] The University of Georgia, the state's flagship public university and an R1 research institution, is in Athens and contributed to its initial growth. In 1991, after a vote the preceding year, the original City of Athens abandoned its charter to form a unified government with Clarke County, referred to jointly as Athens–Clarke County where it is the county seat.[7]
As of 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau's population of the consolidated city-county (all of Clarke County except Winterville and a portion of Bogart) was 127,315.[3] Athens is the sixth-most populous city in Georgia, and the principal city of the Athens metropolitan area,[8] which had a 2020 population of 215,415, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[4] Metropolitan Athens is a component of the larger Atlanta–Athens–Clarke County–Sandy Springs Combined Statistical Area.[9]
The city is dominated by a pervasive college town culture and music scene centered in downtown Athens, next to the University of Georgia's North Campus.[10] Major music acts associated with Athens include numerous alternative rock bands such as R.E.M., the B-52's, Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Harvey Milk. The city is also known as a recording site for such groups as the Atlanta-based Indigo Girls. The 2020 book Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture describes Athens as the model of the indie culture of the 1980s.

Living in Athens Georgia is a great option for people who are looking for an amazing home at a lower price point, all while enjoying close proximity to Atlanta Georgia. However, there are some cons that you need to be aware of before you take the plunge and move down to Athens Georgia, and today we’re going to talk a lot about that.
Some of the things we’ll cover in this video are the proximity to the things to do in Athens Georgia, restaurants, schools, music, housing affordability, the weather, and its growth. You’ll get a really good idea of whether or not your most important factors when choosing a new home are something that Athens offers, and you’ll also get a chance to see whether the pros of living in Athens Georgia outweigh the cons. In my opinion, the cons are pretty weak in comparison to the pros of living in this awesome country town. The proximity to all of the great amenities of Atlanta Georgia, all while being out in the country with beautiful, affordable homes is enough to make Athens an amazing choice for your new home, whether you choose to buy an existing home, purchase a new construction or build from scratch on your own land. All are great options and worth considering when choosing a town or city in the Athens Georgia area!
With that, let’s dive into the pros and cons of living in Athens today!

Athens, Georgia has always been known for its music scene, and we love the live shows, but there is so much more to this picture perfect southern town than tunes. That's why The South's Best Awards recognized this quaint little town as the best of the best. The food is off the charts, and staying in one of the unique local hotels will make your trip into an event you can tell people about. Now is the time to visit, since the Dawgs are national champions, so grab some soul food and ice cream, tour the campus, then you can thank us for the tip later. Have fun!

People share accepted opinions on every famous historical event. However, there is a chance that some of them were imposed on us by the powers that be, possibly for their profit. The alternative does not always mean correct, and they are not officially recognized (however, we wish the last point was true!)
TIMESTAMPS
New Egyptian discoveries 0:42
Fortune hunting in Troy 2:02
The Pearl Harbor attack was provoked by the USA 2:40
The chronology mix-up 3:21
Michael Jackson faked his death and moved to Bahrain 5:11
Titanic sinking alternative theories 6:31
SUMMARY
- Scientists still debate the year of construction of the Egyptian pyramids, the world’s oldest monumental structures. It sounds funny, but the date difference goes from several centuries to 1,000 years! The deep furrows on the Sphinx’s body were proved to be the remains of water erosion. However, the weather in Egypt had not been so rainy for at least 8,000 years. This brings us to the conclusion that the Sphinx might be more than 8,000 years old.
- It is commonly believed that the city of Troy was most likely situated on the Turkish hill Hisarlik and later discovered by archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. However, his colleagues doubted his discovery and considered him to be a fortune hunter.
- One theory suggests that Franklin D. Roosevelt understood that the only way to influence world history was to interfere in World War II, although American society strongly held different opinions. This theory claims that Roosevelt provoked Japan to start the attack by proposing an ultimatum document: the "Hull note."
- Isaac Newton was the first to recognize a mix-up in his monumental work The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended. There were a lot of mismatches. For example, there is a huge disambiguation about the total number of Egyptian Pharaohs: the lists of rulers differ one from another.
- Version № 1 suggests that the sunken ship was the Olympic, an identical ship to the Titanic. The Olympic was constructed a year before and was accidentally damaged with no insurance to cover the costs. To pay the damages, White Star Line came up with the case of the century: they decided to secretly switch the vessels before the sailing. They wanted to send the old and damaged Olympic instead of the new Titanic, fake the crash in the sea, evacuate the passengers to the nearest ships, and easily get the insurance money. But the harsh reality showed that the old Olympic sank too quickly, and the nearest ships were not near enough to save the passengers.

American Revolutionary War - Timelines and Maps - Animated US History

Tensions and skirmishes ran high through many events, namely the Boston Massacre, the Burning of the Gaspee in Rhode Island, and especially the 1773 Boston Tea Party which provoke...

Tea, Taxes, and The American Revolution: Crash Course World History #28

Find out how the tax bill from the Seven Years' War fomented an uprising, how the Enlightenment influenced the Founding Fathers, and who were the winners and losers in this conflict. (hint: many of the people living in the Colonies ended up losers) The Revolution purportedly brought freedom and equality to the Thirteen Colonies, but they weren't equally distributed. Also, you'll learn about America's love affair with commemorative ceramics and what happens when rich ...

Who Won the American Revolution?: Crash Course US History #7
In which John Green teaches you about the American Revolution. And the Revolutionary War. I know we've labored the point here, but they weren't the same thing. In any case, John will teach you about the major battles of the war, and discuss the strategies on both sides. Everyone is familiar with how this war played out for the Founding Fathers; they got to become the Founding Fathers. But what did the revolution mean to the common people in the United States? For white, property-owning males, it was pretty sweet. They gained rights that were a definite step up from being British Colonial citizens. For everyone else, the short-term gains were not clear. Women's rights were unaffected, and slaves remained in slavery. As for poor white folks, they remained poor and disenfranchised. The realit...

This video presents the
American Revolutionary War - a conflict between Britain and its colonies, which later became an international war.
Before the flare-up of the American Revolutionary War, there had been growing tensions and conflicts between the British crown and its thirteen colonies. To raise the revenue from colonies, the mother country took many measures, namely the Sugar Act of 1764, the Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Acts of 1767 and the Tea Act of 1773. These acts provoked great anger among many colonists, and consequently, a rally was held behind the slogan “no taxation without representation”.
Tensions and skirmishes ran high through many events, namely the Boston Massacre, the Burning of the Gaspee in Rhode Island, and especially the 1773 Boston Tea Party which provoked a crackdown by the British Parliament, including closing Boston harbor and passing some acts to restore order in Massachusetts.
In response to this, in September 1774, many colonial leaders including George Washington of Virginia, John and Samuel Adams of Massachusetts, Patrick Henry of Virginia and John Jay of New York gathered in Philadelphia to discuss the colonies’ opposition to British rule, but this First Continental Congress’s attempt to demand independence from Britain did not go so far.
Tensions flared up on the night of April 18, 1775, when British troops marched to Concord, Massachusetts to seize an arms cache. It is the “shot heard ‘round the world” in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on the next day that kicked off the American Revolutionary War.
In June 1775, Continental Army, with General George Washington as its commander, was formed in the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. On June 17, American troops were defeated by the British at the Battle of Bunker Hill in Massachusetts. In late winter, the balance of the fight was shifted when British artillery was captured at Fort Ticonderoga in New York.
In March 1776, the British led by General William Howe retreated to Canada to prepare for a major invasion of New York. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted a Declaration of Independence written mainly by Thomas Jefferson. That same month, a large British fleet was sent to New York with the aim to crush the rebellion. Two months later, routed by Howe’s Redcoats on Long Island, Washington’s troops were forced to evacuate from New York City. However, the surprise attack in Trenton and the battle near Princeton, New Jersey after that, marked another small victory for the colonials and revived the flagging hopes of the rebels.
In July, in an attempt to retake Fort Ticonderoga, General John Burgoyne’s troops suffered a devastating loss to the Americans while Howe troops moved southward from New York to confront Washington’s army near the Chesapeake Bay. On September 25, the British entered Philadelphia. On October 4, Washington struck back at Germantown (Maryland) but was compelled to withdraw to winter quarters at Valley Forge.
In the North, the story was different. After being defeated by American forces in the first battle at Freeman’s Farm (New York) and the second one at Bemis Heights (New York), General Burgoyne and his men were forced to surrender on October 17.
Following the American victory in Battle of Saratoga (New York), France and America signed treaties of alliance on February 6, 1778, in which France provided America with troops and warships.
On June 28, 1778, when withdrawing from Philadelphia, Henry Clinton, who replaced Howe to take over British forces, and his troops were attacked by Washington’s army near Monmouth, New Jersey. This battle ended in a draw, letting Clinton’s army get to New York safely. As the joint attack against British in late July failed, France and America besieged Newport, Rhode Island. The war was locked in a stalemate phase in the North.
In the South, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina were occupied by the British in early 1779 and May 1780 respectively. Later, on October 7, American troops led by Isaac Shelby and John Sevier defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and one-third of General Cornwallis's army at King's Mountain.
Following the Battle of Yorktown and Cornwallis’s surrender, the British still had its men stationed in some areas until the removal of their troops from Charleston and Savannah in late 1782.
The war officially ended with the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783, by which Britain recognized American independence, marking the end of the colonial era in the US.

In which John Green teaches you about the American Revolution and the
American Revolutionary War, which it turns out were two different things. John goes over the issues and events that precipitated rebellion in Britain's American colonies, and he also explores the ideas that laid the groundwork for the new American democracy. Also, you'll learn about America's love affair with commemorative ceramics and what happens when rich white guys take the reins from rich white guys and put together a society of, by, and for rich white guys.

Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the early modern history continues with a video on the American Revolution - the War of American Independence in which we cover all battles from the Americas to Caribbean and from Europe to India. In the video we discuss the main reasons why the Thirteen Colonies rebelled against the British crown, first battles at Lexington and Concord, and then near Boston at Bunker Hill. In 1775 and 1776 the war continued with the siege of Boston, American Declaration of Independence, Fall of New York, Battle of Long Island, Ten Crucial Days, the battle of Trenton and the battle of Princeton, while in 1777 the tide turned with the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Saratoga. France and Spain joined the war around this time, putting even more pressure on the British, who now had to defend their European and Caribbean holdings, too. Despite the fact that the battles of Monmouth Courthouse and Rhode Island were tactically inconclusive, the situation for the Britain continued to deteriorate. However, situation in the South, where there were more Loyalists and the British forces were led by Cornwallis, was better for Britain, which showed itself during the Battles of Savannah, Charleston, Waxhaws, Camden and Kings Mountain. However, the British situation continued to deteriorate leading to the famous battle of Yorktown, where the continental troops were led by George Washington. In the aftermath of the victory at Yorktown, the war continued, but the Americans now had the upper hand and were able to negotiate from the position of power, gaining recognition and becoming independent. We also cover the battle of the Sullivan island, Canadian campaign, including the battle of Quebec and Valcour island, Mohawk expedition, siege of Gibraltar, Second Anglo-Mysore War, Gulf Coast Campaign and Mobile campaign, Caribbean campaign including the battle of St. Kitts and Pensacola campaign, Siege of Negapatam and the Treaty of Mangalore.
The video was made by Antoni Kamerans, while the script was researched and written by David Ernenwein. This video was narrated by Officially Devin (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU0-VII-V376zFxiRGMeZGg & https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC79s7EdN9uXX77-Ly2HmEjQ). Machinima by Malay Archer.

The reality is it took a long time for this whole democracy thing to get underway, and the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness weren't immediately available to all these newly minted Americans.
