Clan Bruce
Clan Bruce (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Brus) is a Scottish clan from Kincardine in Scotland. It was a Royal House in the 14th century, producing two kings of Scotland.
History
Origins of the Clan
The surname Bruce comes from the French de Brus or de Bruis, derived from the lands now called Brix, situated between Cherbourg and Valognes in Normandy, France. There is no evidence to support a claim that a member of the family, Robert de Brix, served under William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest of England. This notion is now believed to have originated in unreliable lists, derived from the later Middle Ages, of people who supposedly fought at the Battle of Hastings.
Both the English and Scots lines of the Brus/Bruce family demonstrably descend from Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale who came to England in 1106. Robert de Brus was a companion-in-arms of Prince David, later David I of Scotland. In 1124 he followed David north to reclaim his kingdom. When a civil war broke out in England between Empress Matilda and her cousin, Stephen, David I of Scotland led a force into England. However de Brus did not follow David and instead joined the English and at the Battle of the Standard in 1138 he took prisoner his own son, who was now Lord of the lands of Annandale. Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale died on 11 May 1141 and was buried at Gysburn.

The Bruce family continued to play an important role in Scottish history in the centuries that followed. Members of the family held positions of power, served as diplomats, and fought in numerous conflicts.
One of the most famous members of the family was the seventh Earl of Elgin, who is best known for rescuing the Elgin marbles from Greece. The marbles were a collection of classical Greek sculptures that had been taken from the Parthenon by the Ottomans and were in danger of being lost forever. The Earl purchased them and brought them back to Scotland, where they are now housed in the British Museum.
Today, the Bruce family continues to be an important part of Scottish history and culture. The present chief of the clan is the eleventh Earl of Elgin and fifteenth of Kincardine, who is actively involved in Scottish public affairs and serves as convenor of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.

On his death bed Robert the Bruce, King Robert I of Scotland had an unusual request - that his heart should be removed from his body and taken on a journey. This video explores the story of that journey and the eventual burial place of various parts of Bruce's body in different locations. It looks at the opening of his tomb in the 19th century and the possible form of his tomb.

The history of Clan Bruce is a fascinating story of a family that rose to prominence in Scotland during the Middle Ages and went on to play a significant role in the country’s history for centuries to come.The earliest known member of the Bruce family was Adam de Brus, who built a castle in Normandy in the eleventh century. His descendants later followed William the Conqueror to England in 1066 and acquired significant lands in Surrey and Dorset.
However, it was Robert de Brus, a later member of the family, who would leave the greatest mark on history. He became a loyal supporter of Prince David, who would later become David I of Scotland, and followed him to Scotland. Robert was granted the lands of Annandale and became a powerful figure in the kingdom.
The Bruce family’s fortunes would rise and fall over the centuries, but they remained a prominent family in Scotland. In the thirteenth century, the family became embroiled in a power struggle for the Scottish throne. Robert the Bruce, the grandson of Robert de Brus, was a leading contender for the crown, but his claim was challenged by John Balliol.
The two rivals engaged in a series of conflicts, and Robert the Bruce ultimately emerged victorious, becoming king of Scotland in 1306. He is perhaps best known for his victory over the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, which secured Scotland’s independence.
The Bruce family continued to play an important role in Scottish history in the centuries that followed. Members of the family held positions of power, served as diplomats, and fought in numerous conflicts.
One of the most famous members of the family was the seventh Earl of Elgin, who is best known for rescuing the Elgin marbles from Greece. The marbles were a collection of classical Greek sculptures that had been taken from the Parthenon by the Ottomans and were in danger of being lost forever. The Earl purchased them and brought them back to Scotland, where they are now housed in the British Museum.
Today, the Bruce family continues to be an important part of Scottish history and culture. The present chief of the clan is the eleventh Earl of Elgin and fifteenth of Kincardine, who is actively involved in Scottish public affairs and serves as convenor of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.
The history of Clan Bruce is a story of a family that rose to prominence in Scotland and left an indelible mark on the country’s history. From their early days in Normandy to their struggles for the Scottish throne and their contributions to art and culture, the Bruce family’s legacy is one that continues to be celebrated to this day.

Clan Bruce is a lowland Scottish Clan originating in the Fife district of Scotland. The surname Bruce was derived from the French name de Bruis. The Scottish line of the Bruce family is believed to be descendant from Robert de Brus who assisted David I of Scotland reclaim the Scottish crown.
The motto of the clan is Fuimus which means we have been. The clan crest features a lion statant with its tail extended.
The clan has two historic seats Lochmaben Castle and Clackmannan Tower. Lochmaben Castle, located in the town of Lochmaben, was built by the Bruce family in 1160. Clackmannan Tower became the seat of the clan in 1359. Both castles were eventually abandoned and their ruins are scheduled monuments in Scotland. The current seat of the clan is Broomhall House. It was built in 1702 by Sir William Bruce and is still the residents of the Bruce family.
In 1306 Robert the Bruce of Clan Bruce was crowned King of Scotland after his victory in the Scottish war of Independence. The line of succession passed to the House of Stewart after Robert’s son David died without a male heir.
The Bruce International Society was formed in 1984. The society was created to promote kinship among clan members and to encourage interest in the clan. A tour of Broomhall House can be arranged where a museum boasts an extensive collection of Bruce artifacts.

Clan Bruce from the book The Scottish Tartans by W. & A. K. JOHNSTON LTD.
The founder was Sir Robert de Brus, a Norman knight.
He came to England with William the Conqueror, who
granted him vast lands in Yorkshire. His son, Robert, went
to Scotland and was made Lord of Annandale by David I,
whose great-grand-daughter Isabella married Robert Bruce,
5th Lord of Annandale. Through this marriage their son
Robert, 6th Lord of Annandale, Regent of Scotland, inherited
a right to the Crown to which he was nominated by
Alexander III before the birth of the " Maid of Norway."
Robert, 7th Lord, married the Celtic Countess of Carrick ;
and their son became that Earl of Carrick who was to wear
the Scottish Crown, complete the liberation of Scotland, and
be familiarly known as Robert the Bruce. Bruce was born in
1274. He died at Cardross, on the Clyde, in 1329. His body
was buried in Dunfermline Abbey, and his heart in Melrose.
The Earl of Elgin is head of one branch of the Bruces. A
Baronetcy of Stenhouse was created in 1629, and of Downhill
in 1804.

Clan Bruce
Clan Bruce (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Brus) is a Scottish clan from Kincardine in Scotland. It was a Royal House in the 14th century, producing two kings of Scotland.
History
Origins of the Clan
The surname Bruce comes from the French de Brus or de Bruis, derived from the lands now called Brix, situated between Cherbourg and Valognes in Normandy, France. There is no evidence to support a claim that a member of the family, Robert de Brix, served under William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest of England. This notion is now believed to have originated in unreliable lists, derived from the later Middle Ages, of people who supposedly fought at the Battle of Hastings.
Both the English and Scots lines of the Brus/Bruce family demonstrably descend from Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale who came to England in 1106. Robert de Brus was a companion-in-arms of Prince David, later David I of Scotland. In 1124 he followed David north to reclaim his kingdom. When a civil war broke out in England between Empress Matilda and her cousin, Stephen, David I of Scotland led a force into England. However de Brus did not follow David and instead joined the English and at the Battle of the Standard in 1138 he took prisoner his own son, who was now Lord of the lands of Annandale. Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale died on 11 May 1141 and was buried at Gysburn.
