British nationalism asserts that the British are a nation and promotes the cultural unity of the British, in a definition of Britishness that includes people of English, Scottish, Welsh, Ulster Scots and Irish descent. British nationalism is closely associated with British unionism, which seeks to uphold the political union that is the United Kingdom, or strengthen the links between the countries of the United Kingdom.
British nationalism's unifying identity descends from the ancient Britons who dwelt on the island of Great Britain. British nationalism grew to include people outside Great Britain, in Ireland, because of the 1542 Crown of Ireland Act, which declared that the crown of Ireland was to be held by the ruling monarch of England as well as Anglo-Irish calls for unity with Britain.
It is characterised as a "powerful but ambivalent force in British politics". In its moderate form, British nationalism has been a civic nationalism, emphasizing both cohesion and diversity of the people of the United Kingdom, its dependencies, and its former colonies. Recently however, nativist nationalism has arisen based on fear of Britain being swamped by immigrants; this anti-immigrant nativist nationalism has manifested politically in the British National Party and other nativist nationalist movements. Politicians, such as British Prime MinisterDavid Cameron of the Conservative Party and his direct predecessor Gordon Brown of the Labour Party, have sought to promote British nationalism as a progressive cause.
The politics of nationalism and racism in post-Brexit Britain | LSE Research
Instances of racist hate crimes have surged in the UK since the 2016 Brexit referendum. The rise of populist nationalism in many parts of the developed world testifies to the resurgence of fears around intensified immigration, and to the renewed power of racism.
Professor Mike Savage, director of LSE’s International Inequalities Institute and Martin White Professor in the LSE Department of Sociology, examines the varying forms of nationalism harboured amongst British elites, and considers how intensifying inequalities inform volatile nationalist and racist sentiments across British society.

Frightening rise in kids groomed by far-right groups
An investigation by Sky News has found that British children under the age of 10 are being investigated over their links to far-right groups.
Extremists are using video games and social media to groom children into following their ideology, Sky has discovered.
Home Office figures show a dramatic rise in the number of under-18s referred to the government's counter-terrorism programme.
And for the first time since the data was recorded, there was an equal balance in the number of cases linked to the far-right and those linked to Islamic radicalisation.

Far-right nationalists protest against housing refugees in Skegness hotels - BBC Newsnight
The issue of how to house those who arrive in the UK on small boats in order to claim asylum is becoming more acute as the numbers arriving increase.
Where more permanent accommodation is unavailable, Home Office policy is to house them in hotels around the country, at a cost of approximately £4.7 million a day.
With public services in many of the towns they are placed in already stretched, this is causing friction with local communities who feel ignored by those who are deciding where to house people.
In some areas, far rights groups are exploiting those community concerns, and organising protests. Last weekend, hotels in Skegness were boarded up in preparation for one of those protests. Newsnight's Yasminara Khan was there.
