258 years of the British Museum
The British Museum opened its doors to visitors 258 years ago this month, on 15 January 1759. The first national public museum in the world, it was – and still is – open to ‘all studious and curious persons’.
To celebrate the anniversary, Director Hartwig Fischer talks about the people who come to the Museum today, and the people who are represented in the collection. At first, the Museum had around 50 visitors a day. Now there are around 15,000 people in the Museum every day, plus half a million who engage online through the website and social media. The conversation has become global – fitting for a museum of the world, for the world.

INSIDE THE BRITISH MUSEUM LONDON
Let's see what all the fuss is about at the world famous British Museum here in London. A number of artefacts have a lot of controversy around them, due to the reason of how and why Britain has ownership of these items. Two of the most debated are the Rosetta Stone and Hoa Hakananai'a... both taken or traded to gain ownership and transported here to London. Where do you think these items should really live?

Some of the world’s greatest cultural and historical treasures are housed in London’s British Museum, and a significant number of them were taken during Britain’s centuries-long imperial rule. In recent years, many of the countries missing their cultural heritage have been asking for some of these items back.
Benin City in Nigeria is one of those places. They've been calling for the return of the Benin Bronzes, hundreds of artifacts looted in 1897 when British soldiers embarked a punitive expedition to Benin. Many are now housed in the British Museum.
And it's just the beginning. As the world reckons with the damage inflicted during Europe’s colonial global takeover, the calls for these items to be returned are getting louder and louder.

Then it is on to the Egypt Gallery, where we will see both human and cat mummies before ending the tour at arguably the most important piece in the museum, the Rosetta Stone.

Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture—sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature—both exemplified by the large Diplodocus cast that dominated the vaulted central hall before it was replaced in 2017 with the skeleton of a blu...

The biggest dinosaurs ever: why did titanosaurs grow so large?
What was the largest dinosaur? And how did it get so big? If you're shouting 'Diplodocus!' and 'Brachiosaurus!', you're on the right track.
Sauropods such as these were enormous. But the true champions were the titanosaurs, the last-surviving group of long-necked sauropods. Titanosaurs such as Puertasaurus, Patagotitan and Argentinosaurus were the longest and heaviest dinosaurs of them all. In fact, they were by far the largest animals to ever live on land.
Watch our animation to find out how these dinosaurs were able to grow so big and what this meant for their survival.

Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe. Leave a comment and tell me about your favourite object in a natural history museum. What’s the natural history museum in your city or country like? You know I want to know!
In this video, Jessica the Museum Guide (that’s me!) takes you on a detailed guided tour of London’s iconic Natural History Museum.
We’ll explore the history of the museum and explore the massive Hintze Hall, including Hope the Blue Whale and the statue of Charles Darwin. Next, we’ll tour the epic Dinosaur Collection and say hello to Dippy, followed by the treasures of the Cadogan Gallery.
We break into The Vault to see some wondrous geology and admire the taxidermy of the Mammals collection. After bidding farewell to the mammals, we take a peek at the Spirit Collection, followed by some highlights of Human Evolution. We finish the tour in the Earthquake Simulator where things really get shakin’ (groan).
As always, thanks for watching. Be sure to leave your comments and questions below. If you enjoyed this virtual tour, then please consider leaving me a tip at paypal.me/jessicatourguide or buy me a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/JessicaGuide

Walkthrough of the Natural History Museum in London 4k
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. The museum is a centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture—sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature—both exemplified by the large Diplodocus cast that dominated the vaulted central hall before it was replaced in 2017 with the skeleton of a blue whale hanging from the ceiling. The Natural History Museum Library contains extensive books, journals, manuscripts, and artwork collections linked to the work and research of the scientific departments; access to the library is by appointment only. The museum is recognised as the pre-eminent centre of natural history and research of related fields in the world.

In this ground-breaking film, Sir David takes us on a journey through the world-famous Natural History Museum in London in a captivating tale of discovery, adventure, and magic, where state-of-the-art CGI, science, and research combine to bring the museum's now long-extinct inhabitants to life to discover how these animals once roamed the planet. As the doors are locked and night falls, Attenborough stays behind and meets some of the most fascinating extinct creatures which come alive in front of his eyes; dinosaurs, ice age beasts, and giant reptiles.

The Natural History Museum in London is a museum of natural history that exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. The museum has a 80 million items within five main collections:botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology.
The Natural History Museum in London is a museum that exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. It is one of three major museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the others being the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Natural History Museum's main frontage, however, is on Cromwell Road.
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. The Natural History Museum Library contains an extensive collection of books, journals, manuscripts, and artwork linked to the work and research of the scientific departments; access to the library is by appointment only. The museum is recognised as the pre-eminent centre of natural history and research of related fields in the world.
Although commonly referred to as the Natural History Museum, it was officially known as British Museum (Natural History) until 1992, despite legal separation from the British Museum itself in 1963. Originating from collections within the British Museum, the landmark Alfred Waterhouse building was built and opened by 1881 and later incorporated the Geological Museum. The Darwin Centre is a more recent addition, partly designed as a modern facility for storing the valuable collections.
Like other publicly funded national museums in the United Kingdom, the Natural History Museum does not charge an admission fee. The museum is an exempt charity and a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Princess of Wales is a patron of the museum. There are approximately 850 staff at the museum. The two largest strategic groups are the Public Engagement Group and Science Group.
