TODAY, on the anniversary of the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, Morpeth has unveiled a new tribute to its unsung hero of the nation’s greatest triumph at sea. Cuthbert Collingwood saw the British fleet to victory after the death of Lord Nelson, whose name is primarily associated with the success. Collingwood spent most of his life at sea and little time at his family home in Oldgate, but it was a place close to his heart. A plaque above the door of his house records him as saying ‘Whenever I think how I am to be happy again, my thoughts carry me back to Morpeth’. The new signboard looks across the Wansbeck towards his garden where he built a ‘poop deck’ lookout point from which he could watch the river. The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on October 21, 1805, off Cape Trafalgar, on the Spanish coast. The Royal Navy, under the command of Admiral Nelson, confronted the combined fleets of Spain and France, led by Napoleon. Nelson had a fleet of 27 ships. The French and Spanish had an armada of 33. Nelson was shot by a French marksman. As he lay dying, Collingwood took control and went on to an historic victory in which the British did not lose a single ship. Today’s sign board unveiling followed the traditional toast to Collingwood at the Town Hall, raised by the Mayor of Morpeth, Coun Betty Bawn, and the laying of a wreath.
