The first Formula Three championship to take place in the UK was the Autosport F3 championship held in 1951, which was won by Eric Brandon. By 1954, it had evolved into a national-level series and was organised by the British Racing and Sports Car Club (BRSCC). This was the 500cc period of Formula Three, which was active in the UK and other countries until 1959, at which point Formula Three was adapted into Formula Junior. In this period, there were often two or three series running concurrently and a single national series had yet to be firmly established.
Formula Three, also called Formula 3 or F3, is a class of open-wheelformula racing. The various championships held in Europe, Australia, South America and Asia form an important step for many prospective Formula One drivers. Formula Three has traditionally been regarded as the first major stepping stone for F1 hopefuls – it is typically the first point in a driver's career at which most drivers in the series are aiming at professional careers in racing rather than being amateurs and enthusiasts. F3 is not cheap, but is regarded as a key investment in a young driver's future career. Success in F3 can lead directly to higher formula series such as a GP2 seat, or even a Formula Onetest or race seat.
History
Formula Three (adopted by the FIA in 1950) evolved from postwarauto racing, with lightweight tube-frame chassis powered by 500 cc motorcycle engines (notably Nortons and JAP speedway). The 500 cc formula originally evolved in 1946 from low-cost "special" racing organised by enthusiasts in Bristol, England, just before the Second World War; British motorsport after the war picked up slowly, partly due to petrol rationing which continued for a number of years and home-built 500 cc cars engines were intended to be accessible to the "impecunious enthusiast". The second post-war motor race in Britain was organised by the VSCC in July 1947 at RAF Gransden Lodge, 500cc cars being the only post-war class to run that day. Unfortunately the race was a complete flop, as three of the seven entrants were non-starters, and, of the four runners, all but one were out of it in the first lap, leaving Eric Brandon in his Cooper Prototype (T2) trailing round to a virtual walk-over at the unimpressive speed of 55.79mph, though his best lap (which was the fastest recorded for any 500) was 65.38mph.

The group formed in 1969; produced by Lucio Battisti, they were the group that accompanied Battisti in his rare live concerts. Their first hit was the song "Questo folle sentimento", which ranked fifth at the Italian hit parade in 1970, and which was followed by a series of top 20 hits, notably "Io ritorno solo" (third at the Italian hit parade) and "Eppur mi son scordato di te" (second at the Italian hit parade), all composed by the same Battisti. In 1971 they entered the Sanremo Music Festival in couple with Little Tony with the song "La folle corsa". The group disbanded in 1974 to allow the band members to pursue their solo careers, then they reunited in 1990. They entered the Sanremo Music Festival two more times in 1992 and 1994 with the songs "Un frammento rosa" and "La casa dell'imperatore". In 1992 Gabriele Lorenzi left the band and was replaced by Andrea Pistilli, then Maurizio Metals and, since 2013, Ciro Di Bitonto.
