Why the B-52 Bomber More Than Lives Up to its BUFF Nickname 💪 Air Warriors | Smithsonian Channel
At 156 feet long and 40 feet tall, the B-52 H Stratofortress was one of the largest bombers in Air Force history, and with a payload to match. It more than earned its nickname: ‘Big Ugly Fat Fella’, or ‘Buff’ for short.

How Did The B-1B Bomber Get Its Nickname?
The USAF has 45 active B-1B bombers based in South Dakota and Texas.
The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is a swept-wing supersonic bomber commonly called "the bone" from (B-One). Some even go so far as to refer to the fastest bomber in the United States Air Force (USAF) fleet as the aircraft being "Bad To The Bone," which is a reference to the 1982 American blues rock band George Thorogood and the Destroyers' song of the same name.
The Rockwell International manufacturing conglomerate bomber can trace its roots back to the mid-1950s, when the United States Air Force (USAF) announced its desire to obtain a new bomber. The requirements were that the aircraft could carry the same payload as the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress and have the supersonic speed of the Convair B-58 Hustler.

In 1991, An F-4 Hit a B-52 Bomber's Tail Gun.
On January 18th, 1991, several B-52 bombers entered deep into Iraq, flying at low altitudes. High over the B-52s, F-4G Wild Weasels were protecting the bombers from Iraqi surface-to-air missiles. Despite flying low, the B-52s were still vulnerable to Iraqi fighter jets like the MiG-29. Therefore, the B-52 tail gunners were attentive! Soon, an F-4G detected a Triple A in the route of bombers and fired an AGM-88 Harm. However, because the B-52s tail radar was similar to the triple "A" gun radar, the Harm blew up behind a B-52, but the jet was able to return to Saudi Arabia. The bomber received repairs in Guam and got the nickname "In Harm's Way!"

Virtavia - Handley Page Hampden | Plane Details and History 4K
The Handley Page Hampden, a British twin-engine medium bomber that played a significant role during the early stages of World War II!
The Hampden emerged from the Air Ministry’s 1932 Specification B.9/32, which sought a twin-engined day bomber with superior performance. Handley Page, along with Vickers, responded to this challenge. The Vickers design eventually became the Wellington, while Handley Page’s radical aircraft took shape. Initially centered around the Rolls-Royce Goshawk engine, the Hampden later adopted more powerful radial engines, such as the Bristol Perseus and Bristol Pegasus. Its narrow-yet-deep fuselage earned it the affectionate nickname "the flying suitcase"
The Hampden entered service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1938. Alongside the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley a...

The 131-Foot Flying Mothership Carrying a Dark Secret
High above the Romanian countryside in August 1941, the night was still and foreboding, and the Soviet TB-3 bomber, an airborne giant, lumbered through the darkness.
Attached beneath its reinforced wings, two small Polikarpov I-16 fighters awaited their moment. The Zveno project, an audacious Soviet experiment, had turned this TB-3 into a flying aircraft carrier, ready to unleash its lethal cargo. In a few moments, these fighters would detach and fly back to base independently, striking targets too far beyond the reach of conventional fighters and too well-defended for bombers to be effective.
The bomber then approached the Ploiești oil refineries, a critical supply point for the Axis powers. Below, the sprawling complex glimmered faintly, unaware of the impending strike.
Suddenly, the ...

The SAM missile changed everything
At the time, the Soviet Union did not have an interceptor fighter that could intercept the Lockheed U-2 spy plane, so the air force leaned towards the North American Aviation's B-70 Valkyrie. While still only a prototype, the B-70 Valkyrie could fly at speeds up to Mach3 at an altitude of 70,000 feet, way beyond the reach of the Soviets.
What the Air Force did not know was that the Soviet Union was busy working on a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system that would threaten aircraft flying at high altitudes. The SAM system proved itself to be highly capable when, on May 1, 1960, it shot down a U-2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers.
Low-flying stealth bombers were what was needed
The incident forced the Air Force to rethink its strategy of high-flying bombers and look towards developing a low-level flying plane with stealth capabilities. The Air Force concluded that pilots could avoid radar detection by using the terrain to their advantage by flying low.
The first fighter bomber that fulfilled the requirement for a low-level bomber was the swept-wing General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark, a now-retired supersonic, medium-range, multirole combat aircraft. At the time, America was moving towards having an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and submarine-launched nuclear missiles as a deterrent. However, the Air Force was adamant that bombers were also needed as a means to deliver an atomic bomb.
Due to the costs involved in developing a new bomber, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara preferred ICBMs as the nation's main deterrent. He also suggested that existing B-52 bombers be modernized and said that the F-111 was capable of delivering atomic bombs.
When President Richard Nixon took office in 1969, his Secretary of Defense, Melvin Laird, concluded that the limited range of the F-111 required the USAF to have a new long-range bomber. In 1970, Boeing, General Dynamics, and North American Rockwell all submitted proposals for the new aircraft.
Ultimately, Rockwell won, and work on what would become the B-1 Lancer commenced. The prototype aircraft made its maiden flight on December 23, 1974. Because the early 1970s were a period of high inflation due primarily to the Arab oil embargo, the initial $40 million cost per unit of the B-1 had risen to $70 million.
The B-1 was seen as being too expensive
When Jimmy Carter became president in 1977, the cost of a B-1 ballooned to $100 million per aircraft, leading Carter to cancel the program and start work on more advanced stealth aircraft. During his 1980 presidential campaign, following the debacle of a failed hostage rescue in Iran, Ronald Reagan campaigned heavily on the platform that Jimmy Carter was weak on defense.
Once elected, Regan reinstated the B-1 program, and after several improvements were made, the USAF ordered 100 aircraft. The first B-1B made its maiden flight on October 18, 1984, and entered service with the USAF in 1986, and by 1988, all 100 aircraft had been delivered.
Currently, the USAF operates a fleet of 45 B-1 bombers from Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota and Dyess AFB in Texas.

Alongside the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley and Vickers Wellington, it formed part of the trio of large twin-engine bombers procured for the RAF. During the early bombing campaigns over Europe, the Hampden participated in significant events, including the first night raid on Berlin and the inaugural 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne. However, as larger four-engined heavy bombers like the Avro Lancaster came into play, the Hampden became obsolete and was retired from RAF Bomber Command service in late 1942!

Suddenly, the TB-3’s signal lights blinked. The I-16 fighters detached and roared into action, diving toward the refineries. Releasing an aircraft from another in mid-air was a feat of engineering and precision. The fighters had to dive away and maneuver quickly as soon as they were released to avoid the massive bomber’s slipstream, which could tear them apart.
The I-16s deftly dodged the TB-3’s wake, their engines roaring as they descended upon the target. The sky erupted in flashes as bombs found their marks.
Anti-aircraft fire suddenly lit up the night, a lethal web of flak and tracer rounds. The TB-3, now vulnerable, shuddered as it took hits, and the crew inside held their breath as they trusted the metal skin of the boxy old bomber with their lives.
