Blood donation: an act of solidarity - World Blood Donor Day 2022
Safe blood and blood products and their transfusion are a critical aspect of health care. They are key in treating people suffering from a range of diseases and as a result of accidents, natural disasters and armed conflict. The need for blood is universal, but access to it is limited – especially in low- and middle -income countries, where shortages particularly impact women and children as these tend to be the people who need blood most.
Becoming a regular voluntary blood donor is a simple but selfless step that everyone can take to strengthen their communities, support local health systems and save lives.
This video was created for World Blood Donor Day 2022, and calls for people all around the globe to give blood in a gesture of solidarity.

“How are blood donors selected? All potential donors must undergo a screening process before donating. Medical history, medications, travel history and blood count are reviewed in donor selection. Donated blood is typed and tested for evidence of infection before released for use. A "crossmatch," or final check, is performed with the recipients' blood prior to transfusion. We advise all potential donors to answer screening and health questions carefully, to ensure the safety of the blood.”

Brownsburg woman thankful for blood donations during cancer battle
A Brownsburg woman is sharing an important reminder about the need for blood donations after the help from strangers saved her life.
Taryn Francissen underwent surgery in June 2024 so doctors could remove what they thought was a benign tumor. It turned out to be far more serious.
"I was diagnosed with a cancer called Ewing sarcoma, which is a rare bone cancer, often found in children, but even more rare in adults," Francissen said. "Luckily, we caught it early, and it was treatable and curable."
But it still meant the now-35-year-old still needed to go through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, even as a healthy young lady who was an athlete and donated blood regularly to help others.

“I started my decade-long turn as an international blood smuggler in 2004 with a mundane task: packing. I gently stacked a dozen half-liter glass vials into two soft-sided picnic coolers. The bottles held the components of a syrupy mix, a powerful medicine made from the immune system particles collected from thousands of people. A nurse would infuse the syrup into my veins, a treatment to keep my immune system under control, to halt its potentially paralyzing attacks on my nerves.”

Taryn Francissen underwent surgery in June 2024 so doctors could remove what they thought was a benign tumor. It turned out to be far more serious.

Blood Business sheds light on the opaque trade of the blood plasma industry. From the impoverished streets of Cleveland Ohio to the golden shores of Switzerland's Lake Zurich, the film explores the intricacies around the business of blood.
Plasma, a component of blood that is highly sought-after, now costs more per liter than petrol. Used by pharmaceutical companies to create expensive medications, this precious liquid has become a lucrative commodity. This film investigates one of the largest corporations in this flourishing market, with profits soaring over €1 billion (US$1.13 billion). Their donation centers are mostly found in poor neighborhoods in the US, and they pay donors for their blood – a practice forbidden in Europe. For impoverished Americans, blood donations have become a source of income, presenting a real risk to their health, as they lie about their conditions and donate repeatedly to make ends meet. Other donors give blood in the hope of helping others, but the reality of where their donations actually go can be somewhat different. We investigate the global trade in blood and plasma donations.
